Gilberto Gil Steps Away From the Stage, Vowing ‘My Music Will Continue'
That was in August 1969, when Gil, who is now a revered international figure with a 60-year career behind him, had just turned 27. The military dictatorship in Brazil had 'invited' him to leave the country after an arrest on charges of 'inciting youth to rebel' during a show in Rio de Janeiro, among other accusations. Forced to flee, Gil chose London — a meeting point for musician and artist expats, with its vibrant cultural scene and artistic freedom — as his new home.
He arrived just in time for the Isle of Wight Festival and knew he couldn't miss his chance to see Dylan play his first show since a motorcycle accident had nearly taken his life.
'It's that passivity, almost,' Gil said in a recent interview. 'That calmness he has onstage, without many exuberant gestures. That's what I wanted to soak up and apply to my own performance.'
And through the years, whether his image was as an inciter of youth or an insightful philosopher, he did. Even as Gil stood onstage in São Paulo this April on his farewell tour, it was the eloquence of his words and the memories his music evoked that captivated 40,000 fans.
A chorus of voices accompanied Gil as he guided concertgoers through the many genres of his career — samba, baião, jazz, reggae, rock and international pop, among them. An innovator with a knack for preserving his country's classic styles while building on them, Gil has used both his music and his voice to help fellow Brazilians feel pride in where they come from and hope in where they're going. In addition to releasing dozens of albums, he has worked in politics since 1987 and served as Brazil's Minister of Culture from 2003 to 2008.
Gil, now 83, admits that it's time to slow down. He doesn't shy away from talk about aging: It's just another change in a life of metamorphosis. And the name he gave his final stadium tour — Tempo Rei (which translates to Time Is King), borrowed from his 1984 song about the passage of time, the brevity of life and the necessity of transformation — alludes to just that.

San Francisco neighbors fed up as 3 straight weekends of concerts wrap up at Golden Gate Park
Three weekends. Three massive concerts. Tens of thousands of fans packing Golden Gate Park. From Dead & Company's concert series to the three-day Outside Lands festival, and now, country star Zach Bryan headlining the Polo Field on Friday night, San Francisco has been a music capital this month. The concerts brought a big economic boost for businesses across the city, but for some neighbors living near the park, it's been three weekends of frustration. "The biggest challenge for me has been parking," said Franco Fortin, who lives about a block from the Polo Field. "I do not have a garage or a driveway spot. So I have to street park." Fortin said last Saturday, during Outside Lands, he drove out around noon. When he returned, he couldn't find parking for 30 minutes and eventually parked his car 12 blocks away from home. Neighbors said traffic, parking headaches, and noise have become routine whenever a major event takes over Golden Gate Park. On the city's 311 website, complaints poured in over the last two weekends. Residents reported blocked driveways, trash, urine bottles, and plenty of noise. Some of the comments were explicit: "Shut that ******* noise off. They just don't ******* care." Another person wrote: "Take your Outside ******* Lands and go **** yourselves. This is a residential neighborhood." Not everyone was completely against the shows. But even big music fans admit they're relieved the streak is over. "Three long weekends and I'm glad it's finally over," said neighbor Spencer Miller. Others turned the chaos into an opportunity. Some rented out driveway spots for cash. Two middle schoolers even set up a stand to sell homemade cookies and brownies to concert-goers. "A long time ago, we saw our neighbors doing it. So we decided to do it. And then we made money, so we kept doing it," said 14-year-old Nicholas Sweeney. Despite the inconvenience, Fortin says the concerts have been good for the city's economy, and local businesses in particular. He hopes San Francisco comes up with a plan to help residents next summer, such as temporary parking permits. Recreation and Park officials said they're aware of the complaints and are working with public transit agencies to ease congestion. But a long-term solution for next year's events may take time. The good news for neighbors: Friday night's Zach Bryan show is just a one-day event—unlike Outside Lands and Dead & Company's three-day runs.

Mariah Carey 'well and truly outranked' by London hotel guest
Mariah Carey was "very much the support act" during her recent stay at a London hotel. The 56-year-old pop star stayed in an upmarket hotel in Central London - but Mariah's presence was overshadowed by another guest, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. A source told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column: "Zelensky's entourage made Mariah look tiny by comparison. "She was well and truly outranked on the luxury ladder. "Mariah is used to being number one wherever she goes – but this time, she was very much the support act." The Ukrainian President was "given the royal treatment" during his stay at the plush hotel. The insider said: "Zelensky's security detail made it clear this wasn't your average celebrity check-in and he was given the royal treatment during his stay." Meanwhile, Mariah previously confessed to being "high-maintenance". The chart-topping star thinks she's actually earned the right to be "high-maintenance", having already been through, and achieved, so much in her life. Asked if she thinks she's high-maintenance, Mariah told the Guardian newspaper: "You know what? I don't give a s***. "I f****** am high-maintenance because I deserve to be at this point. That may sound arrogant, but I hope you frame it within the context of coming from nothing. "If I can't be high-maintenance after working my a** off my entire life, oh, I'm sorry – I didn't realise we all had to be low-maintenance. Hell, no! I was always high-maintenance, it's just I didn't have anyone to do the maintenance when I was growing up!" Mariah doesn't have any qualms with being called a "diva" either. The pop star insists she doesn't worry about what people are saying about her. Mariah - who is one of the best-selling artists of all time - said: "Who the f*** cares? "Honestly! 'Oh my God, they're calling me a diva – I think I'm going to cry!' You think in the grand scheme of things in my life that really matters to me, being called a diva? I am, b******, that's right!"
