Major boost for green cover as govt allocates Rs 17 crore for establishment of 29 parks in Nellore
TIRUPATI: In a significant push to increase the green cover, the state govt has allocated Rs.17 cr for the establishment of 29 parks in Nellore.
TDP legislator for the Nellore rural assembly constituency Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy laid the foundation stone for 14 parks on Wednesday.
She asserted that the foundation stone for the establishment of 15 more parks will be laid on Thursday and Friday.
Kotamreddy also made startling revelation about land sharks encroaching upon reserve lands meant for the establishment of parks across the Nellore rural assembly constituency.
'Besides cases of encroachment of govt lands, it has also come to the notice that several realtors, who ought to have handed over reserve lands to the Nellore municipal corporation, continue to hold the reserve lands in their possession illegally. Overall it has been estimates that approximately Rs.150 cr worth lands are in the illegal occupation. We have taken up the issue to the notice of the state govt and a thorough enquiry will be carried out to expose everyone involved in the dubious land deals besides reclaiming the govt lands', TDP legislator asserted.
Thanking the state govt for allocating funds to the tune of Rs.17 cr for establishment of parks, Kotamreddy asserted that works related to all the 29 parks proposed will be completed within 90 days.

Astronomy group races against time to vacate Junta House
Panaji: The ambitious plan of the Association of Friends of Astronomy (AFA) to establish Goa's first solar energy museum has come to a sudden halt after the association was directed to vacate its premises at Junta House. It is now hoping for chief minister Pramod Sawant's intervention to secure an alternative space and revive its stalled plans. Citing safety concerns over the dilapidated state of the structure, the North Goa collectorate ordered the occupants of Junta House, which includes AFA, commercial establishments, and govt offices, to vacate the building weeks ago. The eviction notice struck the AFA mid-stride — just as it was preparing to launch an ambitious solar energy museum in collaboration with the Goa Energy Development Agency (Geda). The museum, intended for the open terrace, was to celebrate the marriage of astronomy and solar science. Additionally, the AFA earmarked funds in this fiscal year to acquire a Rs 5 lakh telescope, an advanced instrument meant to elevate their stargazing facilities. 'We need to have the observatory in Panaji itself,' said AFA president Satish Nayak, his voice tinged with a mix of resignation and hope. The terrace at the crumbling Junta House in Panaji has, for over four decades, offered a window into the stars when Percival Noronha, along with Jayant Narlikar, established AFA in Feb 1982. It was then chief minister Pratapsingh Rane who offered the vacant terrace of what was then Goa's tallest govt building — Junta House — to house the public astronomical observatory. Over the years, the AFA acquired more space within the building, and today, it has 556sqm wherein it has accommodated an open-air observatory, a telescope dome, an 80-seater AC auditorium, an astronomy mini-museum, tinkering and astrophotography labs, a computer lab, the Aryabhatta library, a telescope gallery, and administrative and utility areas. 'It took 37 years of struggle for the association to achieve this,' said Nayak. AFA, which has already overstayed the one-month deadline, now finds itself in bureaucratic limbo. The irony is cruel — decades of institutional labour now risk being undone. 'We cannot shift anywhere immediately since some of the sites we have seen in Panaji are under construction and will be complete only in another two years. Even if we find an ideal place now, the Junta House lift is not working for us to carefully shift valuable telescopes and other instruments using the stairs,' he said. AFA is therefore seeking an urgent audience with Sawant, before the monsoon assembly session, in a last-ditch effort to preserve what remains of its legacy. 'We have a certain type of establishment where the dome of the observatory needs to be accommodated. The floor, the building, the landscape — all of it matters. Junta House was a premium space in the city. We are hoping that govt is able to give us some space in Altinho, where the planetarium can be established in a full-fledged manner,' Nayak said.

Goan youth reject jobs, fuel migration, says CM
Panaji: After holding a meeting with industry representatives on Wednesday, chief minister Pramod Sawant said that Goan students need to take up whatever jobs are available, at least to gain experience, as the state may soon make experience certificates mandatory for all govt jobs. Sawant said that if Goan students do not take up the opportunities available in the private sector, the in-migration in Goa will increase manifold. 'The industries are saying the minimum package in pharma companies is Rs 8 lakh. They say that they do not understand why Goans are not taking the jobs. Goans need to change their mindset a bit. Because if we do not take up the jobs which are available here, then there will be large scale migration in Goa,' said Sawant. He said that govt has announced its readiness to establish specialised schools aimed at bridging the gap between skills of the local youth and industry requirements. 'If we need to start a finishing school, we are ready to do that through the directorates of skill development, technical education and higher education for all sectors like pharma, shipping, etc. They should approach the directorate of skill development for the apprenticeship programme. We have also onboarded institutions which can help students studying in private institutions upgrade their qualifications while still undergoing their programme. We will start implementing it from July 1,' said Sawant. He said the meeting was held because of talks of Goa not having sufficient employment opportunities. The chief minister said that a review will be held in two months. 'I ask Goan youth to take job opportunities in whichever sector they can get employment. Due to AI, clerical jobs are reducing. It is important to join whatever job opportunities you get to acquire experience. Like for LDC posts, we are likely to make experience certificates mandatory for other jobs too.' The meeting was attended by representatives from the pharma, shipping, tourism, automobile, and service sectors, along with various industrial associations, to deliberate on Goa's evolving manpower and skilling requirements.

Scam in SGPC, it sold land worth Rs 50 lakh for Rs 9 lakh: Former Akal Takht jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh
1 2 Amritsar: Former Akal Takht jathedar and Panthic Akali Lehar founder Bhai Ranjit Singh has accused the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) of allegedly usurping gurdwara property worth crores of rupees in Tarn Taran, a charge the SGPC has denied. Talking to mediapersons on Wednesday, Ranjit Singh alleged that the SGPC sold the property at throwaway prices to those closely associated with its president. "The SGPC is not the property owner but only its custodian," he said. He alleged that the land with a market value of Rs 50 lakh was being sold for just Rs 9 lakh, and the Rs 60 lakh property was being sold for Rs 16 lakh. On the other hand, SGPC secretary Partap Singh and assistant secretary Gurnam Singh, in a joint statement, claimed that if Ranjit Singh believes the property was worth Rs 60 lakh, he himself should deposit Rs 55 lakh in the gurdwara account, and the SGPC will cancel the previous bid and transfer the property to him. They further said that the SGPC sold the land through an open bidding process after publicly advertising it. Although the land is close to the city, according to them, its market value was lower due to narrow lanes and limited accessibility.
