Meet IndyStar motorsports insider Nathan Brown

It takes a staff of dedicated journalists to bring you the news from around Central Indiana. In this feature, the Indianapolis Star introduces readers to our newsroom staff — or, rather, we let them introduce themselves. Up this week is motorsports insider Nathan Brown.
I'm IndyStar's motorsports insider, and I primarily cover the entire IndyCar schedule, along with all the major events at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
I started this job Sept. 30, 2019.
Indianapolis 500 race day and the thrill and unpredictability of it is unlike anything else I experience or cover the entire year. It's a day where I get to be on camera for a couple hours in the morning hosting our live pre-race show, document in real time the goings-on of the largest single-day sporting event in the world and then attempt to tell the biggest story of the day in as deep and well-reported a way as possible. It turns into a 20-hour day, but the rush gets me through it.
I learned at a young age that playing sports for a living wasn't going to be, but I've loved being around all sorts of sports for as long as I can remember. And I especially loved every week when I was a kid flipping through my dad's "Sports Illustrated" and experiencing first-hand the ways in which smart, witty, emotional, well-reported stories can connect people, educate readers and elicit all forms of emotion.
I love going to The Garage and trying out new restaurants in there and exploring different cultures through food that way.
Spending any quality time I can with my wife and our two young boys is always the best part of my days with how much I travel during the hectic six months of the IndyCar season.
I have legitimately zero spare time over the next two weeks until we get past the Detroit Grand Prix, but once we get there, my wife and I will pick back up switching back and forth between watching "The West Wing" and the final season of "You."
Dogs
I competed in show choir competitions all four years of high school.
I'd love to travel all around Europe for two to three weeks and visit as many countries and big cities as possible.
For better or worse (mostly the latter), I'm a lifelong Miami Dolphins fan.

Olympian Ilona Maher reveals personal detail about fashion show appearance

Ilona Maher helped the United States Olympic women's rugby sevens team to a bronze medal finish during the 2024 Paris Games and raised her profile with hilarious and heartfelt social media posts. Maher became a fan favorite during the Olympics and her increased celebrity led her to shine as a Sports Ilustrated Swimsuit model. She was in Miami Beach over the weekend walking down the aisle in a reddish-orange bikini and a turquoise one-piece that flashed her arms. "Men think they are tough but they'll never do Miami Swim Week wearing only bikinis while on their period like I did," she revealed in an Instagram reel on Tuesday. She captioned the post, "I applaud myself." The Americans defeated Australia 14-12 to win the bronze medal in the event. New Zealand won gold and Canada finished with silver. Maher played in six matches, finishing with 15 points and three tries. She was not the only athlete to walk down the runway for the fashion show. Former LSU Tigers gymnast, Olivia Dunne, was also at the event as one of the cover models for the swimsuit edition of the magazine. She stunned the crowd when she performed a split at the end of her routine. "I got triple dog dared," Dunne wrote on X afterward. Sports Illustrated ranks Texans QB Davis Mills bottom three among backups in 2025

Sports Illustrated ranks Texans QB Davis Mills bottom three among backups in 2025 C.J. Stroud is out for OTAs, meaning the Houston Texans are turning the offense over to Davis Mills in drills. The hope is Mills won't have to start or see action unless it's mop-up duty or in a blowout loss, but as a former starter, he's ready to go if head coach DeMeco Ryans calls upon him. But where does Mills rank among backups going into the 2025 season? How would the Texans fare if Mills were to start multiple games for the back-to-back AFC South champions this fall? Sports Illustrated recently ranked all 32 backups entering the 2025 season. Mills, who posted a 5-19-1 during his time leading the offense in 2021 and 2022, ranked near the bottom at No. 30 overall, largely due to the success of C.J. Stroud. "Mills has had zero starts since the organization drafted C.J. Stroud in 2023. But the '21 third-round pick has impressed Houston as a QB2, evident by the one-year, $5 million extension he received last year," SI's Gilberto Manzano wrote. "Mills has plenty of experience, starting 26 games in his first two NFL seasons." While this might feel low, the list is filled with former first-round picks and high-priced options. No. 1 is Atlanta Falcons passer Kirk Cousins, who was expected to be the next franchise option after inking a four-year deal in 2024. He's now potentially on the market for any team that could use a starting quarterback this offseason, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. Daniel Jones and Jimmy Garoppolo, who are former high-paid options, rounded out the top three and very well could start for at least two NFL teams this season. Several quarterbacks could be midseason replacements on bad teams like New York Giants rookie Jaxson Dart (No. 5) also rounded out the top five. If anything Mills' ranking likely has more to do with the praise of Stroud than his on-field play. Even if it feels low, that likely means the Texans know he's meant to be nothing more than a quality No. 2 option.
