A mum-of-two miraculously survived being hit by two Tube trains on the London Underground after she slipped at a station, but says there's one thing that breaks her heart the most.
Sarah de Lagarde was commuting home from work at the High Barnet stop in north London in September 2022 when she fell down the gap between the train and platform. She was then twice hit by separate trains before being rushed to hospital to have an arm and leg amputated. The 47-year-old now uses two prosthetic limbs and is bringing a legal claim against London Underground Ltd (LUL), which is part of Transport for London (TfL), for a breach of duty. Speaking of her ordeal, she said the one thing that breaks her heart the most is the fact she lost her "ability to hug my two young children with both arms."
The first hearing in the case was held at the Royal Courts of Justice today (June 25). Sarah hailed it a 'significant milestone' in her 'journey towards justice', with LUL defending the claim. Speaking outside the Royal Courts of Justice following the hearing, she described the harrowing incident and the resulting impact it has had on her life.
'I was commuting home from work. I fell through the gap. I was run over and crushed by not one, but two London underground trains on the Northern Line. Miraculously, I survived, but it cost me dearly – the first train took my arm, and the second train took my leg," she said.
The most heartbreaking effect of her amputations, however, is Sarah's inability to hug her children like she did before the incident. She explained: 'That night I also lost my mobility, my independence, my dignity and, above all, my ability to hug my two young children with both arms.
'Today, I stand before you not just as a survivor, but as a voice for change. This afternoon's court hearing marks a significant milestone in my journey towards justice against Transport for London, and I am optimistic.'
She added: 'As we prepare for the full trial, I am not just fighting for justice for myself but for a safer, more accountable transport network for all.' At the preliminary hearing in London, Judge Roger Eastman said an eight-week trial would likely take place at the beginning of 2027, with a further hearing due to take place in September this year.
He also said: 'I appreciate this is a very high value claim, potentially, and very serious claim.' James MacDonald, representing Mrs De Lagarde, told the court the case was 'not an ordinary personal injury case'.
In written submissions, he said the issues the trial judge will have to decide include whether LUL was in breach by not having a system in place to ensure that the Platform Train Interface (PTI) is monitored as passengers are getting off a train at a terminus station. Another issue is whether LUL 'was in breach by virtue of its train operators not being trained to look for passengers on the tracks when entering a station'.
Prashant Popat KC, for LUL, said: 'We recognise that this is a tragic case, and the claimant sustained some horrific injuries.' In written submissions, he added: 'The defendant denies these allegations. It also pleads contributory negligence.
'The parties are agreed that the case should proceed first towards a preliminary issue trial on liability. This would encompass breach of duty, causation and the issue of contributory negligence.'
Speaking after the hearing, Sarah said she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and has not returned to using public transport since the incident. She added: 'I'm absolutely terrified.'
Thomas Jervis, a partner at law firm Leigh Day, which is representing Sarah, said: 'This case is incredibly important and may have a profound impact on how London's transport network is operated in the future.'

If at first you don't succeed; deny, deflect, attack. This is apparently the mantra of Sadiq Khan and his Transport for London (TfL) Commissioner, Andy Lord. This week both men hit out at volunteers like me and my friends at the Looking for Growth (LfG) movement, who in recent weeks have taken it upon ourselves to make the state of certain Tube lines ever so slightly less terrible. Anyone who has travelled on the Bakerloo or Central line in London over the last six months will have seen the state of the rolling stock. The clear deterioration of standards, and surging sea of graffiti tags. Under the mantra of actually doing things, rather than simply accepting decline, LfG has been out on a number of cleaning missions, both to scrub off the shockingly prevalent spray painted tags – but also to shame TfL into clearing more up themselves. The boss of TfL hasn't taken well to the shame. Lord responded to our work yesterday by saying no one should take this matter into their own hands. Extraordinarily, he went on to claim: 'We also have evidence of people creating graffiti and then removing it, so that's being investigated by the relevant authorities.; He said those words in City Hall, sat next to a sagely nodding Sadiq Khan. Two of the most powerful men in London were attacking me and my friends for cleaning up their trains – and suggesting that those involved in tidying the graffiti were responsible for putting some of it there in the first place. LfG is the only group that has publicly gone out on these cleaning missions. It seems to me that the Commissioner appeared to be talking about our work when he claimed to have 'evidence' of people 'creating graffiti and then removing it'. It goes without saying that this is tosh. TfL must surely realise this. When it was asked whether they had this mysterious evidence of people creating graffiti and then removing it – and if they're accusing LfG of this behaviour, a spokesman sidestepped the question: 'We know that some people are keen to help in cleaning up graffiti when it appears on our network and we recognise their spirit of volunteerism. However, we are extremely experienced in dealing with it and understand which processes and equipment are needed to effectively remove it. We therefore ask that it is left to our professional cleaners to remove. We are currently removing 3,000 tags per week on the Bakerloo and Central lines. All instances of graffiti are investigated by TfL to help prevent them in the future.' TfL refused to repeat their boss' claims in a written response. Curious. When we're not being told we're spraying the graffiti ourselves, the Mayor is busy accusing us of hampering police investigations, by wiping away evidence. At Mayor's Question Time this week, Khan suggested that 'by encouraging people to clean up graffiti, it leads to fewer prosecutions because action can't be taken, because the evidence literally has been washed away.' How many more tags does Sir Sadiq think need to be photographed before he can start to go after their authors? I see these repeated scribbles on a daily basis and, having spent time scrubbing the things myself, I struggle to see why he thinks he needs to see any more. The Mayor is, of course, a busy man. He and his £639,164-a-year TfL Commissioner might not take the Tube quite as regularly as I do. Perhaps they genuinely believe that the service for which they are responsible is sparkling clean. Those in charge of TfL should be desperately worried that trundling beneath the genteel streets of Maida Vale are Tube carriages that would look more at home in a gritty 20th century New York crime thriller. Yet there is no sense of urgency to address this problem – and clean up our filthy trains. Instead, the focus seems to be to lash out at those of us who want to do something about the problem. Perhaps under Commissioner Lord, TfL needs a new tannoyed catchphrase: Don't see it. Don't say it. And most certainly don't try to sort it.

"By getting the line moving sooner there will also be fewer crowd safety issues in and around stations."Once at the scene the officer driving the ERU vehicle will perform regular policing duties and work alongside colleagues to resolve any crime or safety issues and help get the system moving." Most of the other recommendations in the report and a report made by a coroner have been implemented including the introduction of new radio systems and new pre-agreed meeting points at incidents for the emergency services.

The Transport for London (TfL) chief has accused campaigners of spraying graffiti on the London Tube so that they can then clean it up. Andy Lord, the TfL commissioner, also told the vigilante cleaners to stop taking matters into their own hands. Videos of Londoners donning hi-vis vests and clearing up graffiti-covered Tube carriages have flooded social media in recent weeks. Speaking at a London Assembly meeting on Thursday morning, Mr Lord said: 'Firstly, I would ask anybody not to take this matter into their own hands. 'We also have evidence of people creating graffiti and then removing it, so that is being investigated by the relevant authorities.' The TfL commissioner conceded that there had been a 'spike' in graffiti particularly on the Bakerloo and Central lines, but insisted that 'significant action' had been taken to remove it in the past two to three months. A TfL spokesman said: 'We know that some people are keen to help in cleaning up graffiti when it appears on our network and we recognise their spirit of volunteerism. 'However, we are extremely experienced in dealing with it and understand which processes and equipment are needed to effectively remove it. 'We therefore ask that it is left to our professional cleaners to remove. All instances of graffiti are investigated by TfL to help prevent them in the future.' Mr Lord said his teams were removing about 3,000 tags a week from the Bakerloo and Central lines, neither of which have on-board CCTV cameras. He said cleaners were removing 'one act of graffiti every 11 minutes across our Tube fleet'. Since TfL launched its 'accelerated cleaning programme' in April, more than 70 per cent of Bakerloo trains have been cleaned, with about 17,00 tags removed. TfL has removed more than 19,000 tags from the Central line fleet since mid-April. A shortage of Bakerloo and Central line trains has exacerbated the problem, as it is harder to withdraw trains from service without impacting services. TfL previously admitted an increase in graffiti on the Bakerloo line was partly attributable to its automatic washer being out of action for weeks because of a track defect at the depot. The Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan has said he is wary of giving too much air time to the graffiti problem as he doesn't want to 'reward bad behaviour'. He told a discussion at the TfL board on Wednesday: 'Every graffiti is photographed before it is taken down. What we don't want to do is amplify the work of these people. We don't want to reward bad behaviour by publicising it.' Last year, a brand new Tube train was vandalised with graffiti before it had even made it into service. The Piccadilly line train was tagged while it was in transit from the manufacturer to the depot.
