Asda boosts employee wages with £80m investment in retail pay
British supermarket chain Asda plans a substantial £80m ($103m) infusion into retail wages, raising the hourly earnings of employees in its stores to £12.60 from October 2025.
115,000 workers at Asda Retail and Asda Express will benefit from a three-stage pay increase that amounts to a 4.7% raise, pushing their current wage from £12.04 up to £12.60 per hour. For those working in locations within the M25 London orbital motorway, the hourly wage will rise to £13.82.
Asda has committed £500m to enhancing retail salaries since its acquisition by a consortium of investors in 2021, marking a significant 35% growth in the base hourly rate from £9.36 to the forthcoming £12.60.
Asda chief people officer Hayley Tatum stated: 'We're proud to have invested more than £500m in retail pay over the last four years. Our colleagues are what makes Asda special, and this latest pay investment, plus an increased colleague discount and enhanced family friendly policies, recognises the key role they play in serving customers each day.'
Alongside this investment in employee remuneration, Asda has confirmed that it will roll out improved and comprehensive family-friendly policies for all staff members from July 2025.
These include extending maternity and adoption leave pay from 12 weeks to half a year, and doubling paternity leave to four weeks at full pay.
The retailer has also introduced a policy granting kinship carers 26 weeks of paid leave, and another providing two weeks of paid leave for individuals experiencing pregnancy loss before 24 weeks.
The company also recently raised its employee discount to 15%.
The new pay rates were established through an agreement with Usdaw, the trade union authorised to negotiate wages on behalf of employees at Asda Express, Food Service and LEON.
Usdaw national officer Jayne Allport stated: 'The cost of living continues to be a key concern, so the business's decision to respond in such a positive manner is welcome. Our members are key workers delivering essential services, it is only right they are fairly rewarded with a living wage.'
Asda's total revenue for the year ended 31 December 2024 declined to £21.7bn from £21.9bn in fiscal 2023.

Capita to roll out AI-powered recruitment this summer
LONDON (Reuters) -Capita, a British outsourcer that works with government, armed forces and companies, said it was using AI to cut recruitment from weeks to just hours, and it would roll out the service, developed with Salesforce Inc, this summer. "We hire about 10,000 people for multiple operations and multiple contracts every year because of the nature of the transient workforce in some of our markets," Chief Executive Adolfo Hernandez said in an interview. Salesforce said Capita was the first business-to-business company in Britain to deploy its Agentforce AI, using it to automate more than 200 tasks, including recruitment, where it speeds up hiring from job specification to shortlisting. Hernandez said the tool, built in the first three months of the year, could produce a qualified pipeline of candidates that had been matched to the job, leaving recruiters more time to dedicate to final interviews and bringing new staff onboard. "We're going to tune it and then when we've got it ready, we'll go to market," he said. "High volume recruitment will probably be going to market this summer." Canada's WSP Global to acquire UK's Ricardo for $490 million
(Reuters) -Canada-based WSP Global said on Wednesday that it would acquire British environmental and engineering consulting firm Ricardo for about 363.1 million pounds ($489.6 million) including debt. The British company had been under pressure from rival and investor Science Group , who had been pushing for a sale or breakup of Ricardo amid calls to oust Chairman Mark Clare and other directors, citing underperformance and structural inefficiencies. Science Group, Ricardo's second-largest investor with a 21.76% stake according to LSEG data, said on Wednesday it would sell a 20% stake to WSP for about 53.5 million pounds. KKR tables 'best and final' $2.3 billion offer to buy UK's Assura
(Reuters) -U.S. private equity firm KKR and Assura have agreed on the terms of a "best and final" offer for the British healthcare real estate investor's sale, valuing it at nearly 1.7 billion pounds ($2.29 billion), the companies said on Wednesday. The latest proposal from KKR and private equity firm Stonepeak Partners of 52.1 pence a share including dividends trumps the 51.7 pence offered by rival suitor Primary Health Properties last month. Assura joins a growing list of UK companies being bought out and taken private by overseas private equity firms or investment companies, attracted by cheap valuations.
