TEHATTA (NADIA): An entire village, which came out on Saturday to lay to rest Indian Army jawan
Jhantu Ali Shaikh
, heard his brother - also a jawan with the country's defence forces in Jammu & Kashmir - vowing revenge for the death.
Jhantu - a commando with the 6 Para Forces - died in an encounter with terrorists in J&K's Udhampur on Thursday, two days after the Pahalgam carnage in which Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 people, 25 of them tourists. On Saturday, Jhantu's elder brother, Rafiqul, a subedar in an artillery reg-iment also posted in Kashmir, led the procession that carried Jhantu's coffin to the burial ground in Tehatta's Patharghata village.

"My brother died in the line of duty while trying to neutralise the terrorists who butchered innocent tourists. I will avenge his death," Rafiqul - wearing his Army uniform - said, as hundreds of Muslim and Hindu villagers from Patharghata and beyond heard him in silence.

Villagers wave National Flag, pay last respects
The Indian Army is above all caste and creed. Can anyone say who is Hindu or who is Muslim in the Army? The Indian Army is a place where soldiers from different faiths eat from the same plate; their food is cooked in the same utensil. Come to the Army if you want to see real brotherhood," Rafiqul said.
My brother is no more and no one can compensate the loss suffered by his family and children. I am proud that my brother sacrificed his life for the country. You have heard about terrorists identifying Hindus and then killing them. A 10-member team, including my brother, followed intelligence inputs to go to the Dudu-Basantgarh area in Udhampur to eliminate the same terrorists," he told the villagers. Jhantu served in the Indian Army for 14 years.
Hundreds of villagers, waving the Tricolour, lined the route from Jhantu and Rafiqul's home to the burial ground and expressed outrage at the
Pahalgam massacre
. A military vehicle - decked with Jhantu's photographs, flowers and wreaths - rolled into Patharghata at 8 a.m. bearing Jhantu's National Flag-draped coffin.

Farewell letter found at the home of the Austrian school shooter but motive remains unclear

Candles light on the main square in the city center after a deadly shooting at a school in Graz, Austria, Tuesday, June 10, 2025. (AP Photo/Heinz-Peter Bader) Investigators found a farewell letter and a non-functional pipe bomb when they searched the home of a man who opened fire at his former school in Austria, killing 10 people and taking his own life, police said Wednesday. As Austria mourned the victims of what appeared to be the deadliest attack in its post-World War II history, with a national minute of silence planned Wednesday morning, questions remained about the motive of the shooter. The 21-year-old Austrian man lived near Graz and was a former student at the BORG Dreierschutzengasse high school, in Austria's second-biggest city, who hadn't completed his studies. Police have said that he used two weapons, a shotgun and a handgun, which he appeared to have owned legally. Police didn't elaborate on investigators' findings in a brief post on social network X. But a senior official who acknowledged that the letter had been found on Tuesday night said it hadn't allowed them to draw conclusions. "A farewell letter in analog and digital form was found," Franz Ruf, the public security director at Austria's Interior Ministry, told ORF public television. "He says goodbye to his parents. But no motive can be inferred from the farewell letter, and that is a matter for further investigations." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Milana, 38, Shows Her Huge Size In New Photos. Refusal To Take Pre-Wedding Bath Finally Exposed Kerala Bride Who Married 12+ Men In 10 Years

Last Updated: 'Nahanam', a key Hindu wedding ritual in Kerala symbolising purification, was skipped by Reshma, who insisted on going straight to a beauty parlour before the ceremony A 30-year-old man in Thiruvananthapuram recently uncovered an elaborate marriage fraud involving a woman named Reshma, thanks to a suspicious refusal to participate in a pre-wedding bathing ritual. This ritual, known as 'Nahanam', is a significant part of Hindu wedding traditions in Kerala, symbolising purification before marriage. The groom, Aneesh and Reshma had connected through a matrimonial site and, after extensive conversations, had set a wedding date. However, on the day of the wedding, Reshma refused to partake in the Nahanam ritual and insisted on going directly to a beauty parlour. This refusal raised suspicions, leading to a search of her belongings, which revealed documents of her previous marriages. Upon investigation, it was discovered that Reshma, a resident of Udayamperoor in Ernakulam, had been involved in a decade-long scam, marrying over a dozen men, and absconding with jewellery and other valuables each time. Reshma's pattern involved meeting men through matrimonial sites, weaving convincing tales, and then disappearing post-marriage with their possessions. The police, informed by Aneesh, confirmed that she had a two-year-old child. In the latest case, Reshma introduced a woman as her mother. The groom, Aneesh, had posted a marriage advertisement in a matrimony group. Reshma met Aneesh and claimed she was adopted by her foster mother, who was not interested in her marriage. Aneesh believed her story and agreed to marry her. A day before the wedding, Aneesh arranged for Reshma to stay at his friend's house, who was a member of another village panchayat. On the wedding day, Reshma refused to bathe and said she would go straight to the beauty parlour. This made Aneesh's friend suspicious of her. The wedding and banquet preparations were all in place, but a search of Reshma's bag uncovered documents related to her previous marriages. Acting on a complaint by Aneesh, a team led by Kattakada DySP N. Shibu, SHO V.S. Ajeesh, and SI Venu made a dramatic entry into the marriage hall and arrested Reshma. During interrogation, Reshma confessed that she had married another man just 45 days ago and was planning to marry yet another man from Thiruvananthapuram next month. Despite her claims of seeking true love, police suspect the list of her marriages may be more extensive, though victims are reluctant to come forward due to embarrassment. Reshma's history of deception began in 2014 when she eloped with a man from Ernakulam during her degree studies, living with him until 2017. She subsequently married four more times by 2022 and had a child in 2023. Remarkably, she managed to marry twice within ten days in 2025. First Published: June 11, 2025, 12:17 IST
