Reported earlier this year as being lined-up for local introduction in the final quarter of the year, LDV has released pricing of its flagship Terron 9 bakkie in Australia as a teaser of what South Africa will soon get.
What is it?
Set to be positioned above the T60, the Terron 9 will not only take aim at higher-end versions of the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, but also the latter's twin, the Volkswagen Amarok, and the GWM P500 when it makes its landfall at the end of the year.
Also expected to be sold as an MG similar to the T60 that wears the MG Extender moniker in Thailand, the double cab-only Terron 9 measures 5 500 mm long, 1 997 mm wide and 1 874 mm high with its wheelbase stretching 3 330 mm long.

Offering a payload of between 1 005 kg and 1 100 kg depending on the trim grade and a maximum towing capacity of 3 500 kg, the Terron 9 has a ground clearance of 220 mm, wading depth of 500 mm, approach angle of 29-degrees, breakover angle of 20-degree and departure angle of 25-degrees.
Diesel first, EV later
Down Under, the line-up will span two derivatives; Origin and Evolve, both powered by the same engine, a new 2.5-litre turbodiesel producing 163kW/520Nm.

As standard, the Terron 9 has a part-time four-wheel-drive system on both models, with the sole transmission option being an equally new eight-speed automatic.
Arriving later, the all-electric eTerron, which made a surprise showing at the Nampo Agricultural Expo in Bothaville in the Free State in May as the Maxus eTerron 9, will produce a reported 325 kW from its 102-kWh battery pack, and have a range of 400 km between trips to the plug.
Spec
On the specification side, both variants come standard with a pair of 12.3-inch displays, bi-LED headlights, type-A and type-C USB ports, rain sense wipers, cloth upholstery, a rubberised loadbin, electric front seats, a rear diff-lock, roof rails and Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto.
Taking care of safety are front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, tyre pressure monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Driver Attention Alert, Safe Exit Assist, Lane Departure Warning and Traffic Sign Recognition.

Model-wise, the Origin has 18-inch alloy wheels and a four-speaker sound system, whereas the Evolve gets 20-inch alloys, folding electric mirrors, an eight-speaker JBL audio and a front locking differential.
Adding to further to the Evolve is Trailer Reverse Assist, ambient lighting, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, LED loadbed lighting and heated rear seats.
Colours and price
In total, six colours have been selected; white, black, Concrete Grey, Desert Yellow, Jewel Blue and Spruce Green.
Now available, pricing for the Terron 9 kicks-off at $50 990 for the Origin and $55 990 for the Evolve. Directly converted to rand without the various taxes included, these amount to R591 834 and R649 868 respectively.
As a comparison, pricing for the T60 ranges from R480 000 to R790 000, suggesting a probable starting price of around R820 000 to R850 000 for the Terron 9 locally.
Coming in quarter four
For the moment, no further details about the Terron 9 for South Africa is known, however, expect more to be divulged around or before the stipulated fourth quarter reveal.

The top tier Ultra Luxury variant scores more cabin niceties in the form of a heated steering wheel, rear under-seat storage trays, electrically adjustable heated and ventilated rear seats, rear wireless charging pad, multicolour ambient lighting, head-up driving display, analogue dashboard clock and a 10-speaker Harman Infinity sound system with a stand-alone amplifier. There's also automated parking assist, adjustable brake recovery, expanded front/rear parking sensors (six, up from four) and side mirror demisters. Under the bonnet, P500 Luxury and Super Luxury variants are powered by a 2.4 l four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. Paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission, it develops 135kW and 480Nm of torque. On the combined cycle you can expect this flexible unit to sip a claimed 8.6 l /100km. Braked towing capacity weighs in at a respectable 3.5 tons. The flagship P500 Ultra Luxury comes armed with the Chinese marque's self-charging hybrid powertrain system that marries a 180kW/380Nm 2.0 l four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine to a 78kW/268Nm electric motor. Meshed to a nine-speed automatic gearbox, GWM claims a total system output of 255kW and 648Nm of torque. Combined fuel consumption is 9.8 l /100km with CO ² emissions coming in at 225g/km. Fashionable eyewear devices could be the best at enabling AI adoption
A pair of transparent Ray-Ban Meta 2nd generation smart glasses is seen on display during the Meta Connect Developer Conference at Metas headquarters in Menlo Park, California in this file photo. Image: AFP The search for a perfect AI hardware is on and takes many forms. One of them comes in the form of eyewear products that are touted as the next outlet for rendering AI services. Tech companies have tried eyewear devices, however, they were lacking in style and game changing technology. This time around many have improved on the looks and technology. The Meta RayBan collaboration is one of the great examples of merging technology and fashion. It is packed with AI that features technology in ways we've not seen before. In June this year, Xiaomi officially entered the smart glasses market with the launch of its first AI-powered eyewear, positioning itself as a rival to Meta's Ray-Ban collaboration. The glasses are powered by Xiaomi's XiaoAI assistant, enabling users to perform a range of tasks via voice command, including capturing video and photos, recognizing objects, translating text, and scanning QR codes for mobile payments via Alipay. The device has capability to handle first-person video calls and live streaming. Xiaomi's entry into smart eyewear follows similar moves by other major Chinese firms. Huawei introduced its latest AI glasses in April, which feature voice and translation tools but lack a camera. Baidu is preparing to release its own camera-equipped Xiaodu AI glasses later this year, powered by its Ernie AI models. The eyewear space is getting crowded quickly. It also signals a move from smartphones to other form factors that may dominate in future. This move is also one of the most promising for AI adoption. It will enable natural use of AI in our daily lives. According to a report by Counterpoint the global smart glasses market saw shipments more than double in the first half of the year, driven mostly by strong demand for Meta Platforms' glasses, along with new offerings from rising competitors like China's Xiaomi. The report indicates that the 110% year-on-year surge in shipments was fuelled by robust interest in the artificial intelligence glasses segment, which accounted for 78% of total smart frame shipments. Next Stay Close ✕ The convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and wearable technology is poised to redefine consumer tech, with an unlikely alliance at the forefront: Meta Platforms Inc. and EssilorLuxottica. This partnership, rooted in strategic synergy between Meta's AI infrastructure and EssilorLuxottica's wearable tech production, represents a bold bet on smart glasses as the next major growth frontier. Meta's 3% stake in EssilorLuxottica, valued at approximately €3 billion, marks a pivotal shift in its hardware strategy. The collaboration, which began in 2019, has already produced two generations of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, blending Meta's AI-driven voice assistant with EssilorLuxottica's expertise in optical design and global distribution. The second-generation glasses, launched in 2023, now boast features like real-time landmark identification, voice-controlled messaging, and recipe recognition via smartphone tether. The partnership's true power lies in its complementary strengths: Meta's AI prowess and EssilorLuxottica's unparalleled access to 150+ eyewear brands, including Oakley, Prada, and Chanel. This synergy enables the duo to tackle two critical barriers to wearable tech adoption—usability and desirability—while leveraging EssilorLuxottica's 8 000+ retail locations worldwide. The adoption of smart glasses is an important progress which may fuel adoption for AI. It is also important for health reasons as well. We are now beginning to see innovations that may transform the spectacles market as well. Recently, Finnish startup IXI has been quietly crafting high-tech specs for more practical purposes. Founded in 2021, the company emerged from stealth in April with $36 million in funding to commercialise what it claims are the world's first autofocus glasses. The prescription specs promise to change the way visually-impaired people see the world around them. This is a space to watch and may be a relief from a world that is dominated by smartphones. Local launch of new Jaecoo J5 is just around the corner
Jaecoo has announced that its new J5 will arrive in South Africa next month. Slotting beneath the J7 that made its local debut in 2024, this compact SUV stands out with a prominent radiator grille flowing seamlessly into a pair of slim headlamp clusters. Generous ground clearance and pronounced wheel arches underscore the vehicle's silhouette while the rear features an LED light bar between the tail lights. The Chinese carmaker confirmed the J5 will be offered in three trim levels — Vortex, Glacier and Inferno. Standard equipment across the range is expected to include a 13.2-inch touchscreen with integrated entertainment apps and smart navigation, wireless connectivity and intelligent climate control with an advanced filtration system. The range-topping Inferno will add more premium features, including advanced driver assistance systems. Jaecoo says safety has been prioritised across all models, with a suite of technologies designed to protect occupants and other road users. All J5 variants will be powered by a 1.5l four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 115kW and 230Nm, paired with an automatic transmission that drives the front wheels. The Jaecoo J5 is set to reach local dealerships in September, with pricing and final specifications to be confirmed closer to launch.
