Pet-friendly holidays are on the rise with Aussies looking for destinations they can take their furry companions
According to the RSPCA, almost 70 per cent of Australian households have an estimated 28 million pets, and many Australians are looking for the perfect getaway with their furry companions.
New data from TripAdvisor reveals Australians are increasingly shaping their travel plans around their dogs and heading to pet-friendly destinations.
Holiday-makers searching for dog-friendly restaurants is up about 10 per cent compared to the previous period in 2024 and searches for pet-friendly accommodation labelled 'pets allowed' increased 22 per cent in early 2025.
The most pet-friendly destinations in Australia were Rye (Victoria), Rainbow Beach, (Qld), Mudgee (NSW), Robe (SA) and Dunsborough (WA).
TripAdvisor and My Dog have embraced the trend and teamed up to launch a new co-branded digital hub to connect Australians with pet-friendly communities.
The hub uses TripAdvisor's online platform and mobile app to help pet owners find dog-friendly travel spots and encourages businesses to recognise the benefits of becoming a pet-friendly destination.
Users can find city guides featuring pet-friendly travel tips and attractions, as well as an AI trip builder to build a pet-friendly trip with itineraries guided by traveller tips and reviews.
TripAdvisor sales director Scott Wegener said the hub was designed to provide information in one place and inspire travellers to visit pet friendly communities throughout Australia.
Mr Wegener said they had seen an increase in demand and more people filtering pet-friendly on their platform.
'Almost 30 per cent of all accommodation listed on the site is classified as pet friendly, he said.
'There's roughly around 20,000 pet friendly accommodation providers throughout Australia that pet owners have access to and probably don't realise.'
He said while people probably had an expectation that the accommodation would be more rural or beachside, there were a lot of inner city properties, as well as five star hotels, that were pet friendly.
'It's definitely growing and the beauty is the types of accommodation that offers pet friendly is a mix,' he said.
'Australia has one of the highest percentages of pet ownership in the world and our latest research indicates that more than 50 per cent of those pet owners in Australia plan to travel with their pets in the next 12 months.'
Stacey Pinchbeck, 37, owns two golden retrievers named Dolly and Darcy that are a big part of her little family.
She likes to take them away on family trips with her husband Lynden and baby, so friends or family members are not burdened with looking after her pets.
She said it was stressful finding accommodation providers that would allow them to take two dogs aged five and 18 months, as well as find places to eat with and walk the dogs.
'I want to bring the dogs with us, not only would I miss them but I feel bad if I have to leave them behind but I don't like the idea of having a petsitter or stranger in my home,' she said.
'I have a sister who lives in LA and it is pretty standard over there if you have a dog it will go to restaurants or hotels with you.
'We are a bit behind here, I feel like it's starting to take off but it is still really hard to find accommodation that will allow you to bring two dogs, some places might only allow one small dog.
'When we take the dogs we also like to be near parks or trails so we can take them for a walk.
'There are also lot of places that don't allow dogs on beaches so this app is a great idea, it will make travelling a lot easier.'

Spirit of Tasmania IV arrives in Western Australia after voyage from Scotland
The newest Spirit of Tasmania ferry has arrived in Australian waters after a six-week voyage from Scotland — but it will still be more than a week before it is expected to reach Hobart. Spirit of Tasmania IV — one of two new vessels that are set to replace TT-Line's current Bass Strait ferries — left the Scottish port of Leith on June 30. The 212-metre-long ship has reached Fremantle in Western Australia, after travelling via Gibraltar, Cape Verde off the western coast of Africa, Cape Town in South Africa and Port Louis in Mauritius. It will remain in Fremantle for the next four days to undergo customs and immigration formalities and a crew change, as well as to pick up fresh supplies and fuel. Spirit IV will then make its way to Hobart, where it's scheduled to dock on August 23, weather permitting. In Hobart, the vessel will undergo a final fit-out, including mattresses, tabletops and artworks, while the crew will undertake training. It will be more than a year before Spirit IV begins transporting passengers and freight between Tasmania and Victoria, due to significant delays and cost blowouts with its berthing facilities in Devonport. The infrastructure, which was originally set to cost $90 million but will now cost $493 million, won't be ready until October next year. Spirit IV was built in Finland by shipbuilder Rauma Marine Construction (RMC), which completed the job last year. But instead of heading to Tasmania, it spent almost six months berthed in Scotland while the state government investigated whether another company would lease the ship. As of late April, storing the vessel in Scotland had cost the Tasmanian government $4.3 million, including fuel, crew and port costs. The second replacement vessel, Spirit of Tasmania V, was handed over to TT-Line at a ceremony in Finland in June. It is not yet known when Spirit V will leave Finland and travel to Tasmania.

Shane Warne's son spills on Australian cricket legend's cheeky habit
Shane Warne built a career off bamboozling opposition batsmen and his son Jackson has now revealed the Australian cricket legend was also far from an easy read for restaurant staff and patrons. The king of spin tragically died of a heart attack aged 52 on March 4, 2022, while staying at a luxury villa in Koh Samui, Thailand. But when he was alive, he was known for his insane sporting ability, charisma, quick wit and his childlike tastebuds. Warne was regularly seen downing a pizza, spaghetti bolognese or bacon sandwiches and would avoid fruit and vegetables at all costs. His pre-game preferences of baked beans on toast, and midgame snacks often raised eyebrows. Warne's friends often joked that his diet resembled that of a child rather than an athletic specimen. And in a rare insight into the sporting icon, his son Jackson revealed his father would even order takeaway from a different restaurant to the one he was at. 'You know (Japanese restaurant) Nobu and Rockpool at Crown?' Jackson said on the Life of Brian Podcast. 'There have been multiple times where he would have an important meeting or catch up with people there for dinner. 'He would go to the restaurants – he knew he wasn't going to eat anything – he would be looking at the menu (and say), 'I don't eat steak, these fish and oysters, no thanks, not for me'. 'So 40 minutes later, there would be a pizza from Gradi, just around the corner. 'He would be eating a pizza from a different restaurant in one of the restaurants there.' It isn't the first time light has been shed on Warne's truly unique dining traditions. Aussie pace legend Brett Lee revealed on the Willow Talk Cricket Podcast in November that it was almost a tradition for Warnie to order pizza to be delivered to any fancy restaurant he was at. And it wouldn't be a supreme or even a meatlovers, just a simple cheese and nothing else. 'I remember going to that famous Japanese restaurant Nobu, and Warnie ordered a margherita pizza,' Lee said. 'Warnie only ever ate his baked beans, cheese on toast, he liked lasagna, spaghetti bolognese and margherita pizzas. 'We were going to one of the best restaurants in the world, and Warnie, just being Warnie, decided to order margherita pizza. 'I don't think he ever ate one vegetable in his life.' Warne must have been doing something right however. He is considered one of the greatest cricketers to ever play the game, claiming a whopping 708 Test wickets at 25.41 in 145 matches between 1992 and 2007.
