Toronto film festival: Angelina Jolie, Saoirse Ronan and Keanu Reeves lead lineup
The 50th edition of the festival will again feature a string of films hoping to gain awards traction, taking place after the Venice film festival.
Jolie, who premiered a film at last year's Toronto as director, will return in front of the camera for the French director Alice Winocour's drama Couture. She will play a film-maker arriving in Paris for fashion week, following her role as Maria Callas in last year's Netflix biopic Maria. Winocour previously premiered the Eva Green-led sci-fi film Proxima at the festival.
Ronan, who was last seen in the alcoholism drama The Outrun and Steve McQueen's Blitz, will lead the Bristol-set comedy thriller Bad Apples, playing a teacher forced into drastic lengths while dealing with a particularly troubling 11-year-old. The official synopsis promises 'uneasy laughs' and a 'provocative' tone.
Reeves will lead Aziz Ansari's directorial debut, Good Fortune, as an angel who engineers a body swap between a poor and a rich man, played by Ansari and Seth Rogen, respectively. Ansari has said he hopes the film helps to resurrect the theatrically released R-rated comedy. 'Aziz is great,' Reeves told Entertainment Weekly. 'A great writer, director, actor. I had such a fantastic experience working with him.'
Toronto will also see directorial debuts from actors James McAvoy, Brian Cox and Euphoria's Maude Apatow, daughter of Judd Apatow. McAvoy directed California Schemin', based on the true story of Scottish rappers pretending to be American, Cox has helmed Glenrothan, a drama described as a 'love letter to Scotland', and Apatow is behind Poetic License, a comedy starring her mother Leslie Mann.
The festival will also see the world premiere of Christy, a biopic of the groundbreaking female boxer Christy Martin starring Sydney Sweeney. The film, from the Animal Kingdom director David Michôd, will cover Martin's rise in the 1990s and then later her husband's attempt to murder her. 'Our film is a wild mix of inspiring underdog sports-world story and personal saga,' Michôd said to W Magazine. 'Sydney trained her butt off to play the part. The beauty of Sydney is that she turned up to work every day with her tail wagging, ready to go. No matter how tough it was, she was like a ray of sunshine.'
Other true stories premiering include the 1930s-set Palestine 36 about a Palestinian uprising against colonial British rule, the historical drama Nuremberg starring Rami Malek and Russell Crowe, Agnieszka Holland's Franz Kafka biopic Franz, Swiped which stars Lily James as the founder of the dating app Bumble and Paul Greengrass's previously announced survival thriller The Lost Bus, which stars Matthew McConaughey as a schoolbus driver trying to save children from the deadly 2018 Camp fire in California.
Premieres that had also already been announced before Monday include Rian Johnson's much-anticipated Knives Out sequel Wake Up Dead Man, which brings back Daniel Craig and adds Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close and Mila Kunis, the buzzy Brendan Fraser-led comedy drama Rental Family from Beef director Hikari, the Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance's Roofman with Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst, Nicholas Hytner's period comedy The Choral starring Ralph Fiennes and based on an original Alan Bennett script and Steven Soderbergh's dark comedy The Christophers with Michaela Coel, Ian McKellen and Baby Reindeer breakout Jessica Gunning.
Chris Evans will also play a movie star abducted by a group of radicals in Sacrifice, an action comedy also starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek, John Malkovich and Charli xcx. Director Bobby Farrelly, known for co-directing hit films such as There's Something About Mary, will unveil Driver's Ed, a new comedy starring the White Lotus breakout Sam Nivola. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James will also headline the heist thriller Fuze from the Scottish director David Mackenzie.
Other notable premieres include the offbeat romantic comedy Eternity with Elizabeth Olsen and Miles Teller, mystery thriller The Ugly from Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho and Easy's Waltz from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto with Al Pacino and Vince Vaughn.
Documentaries set to premiere include Baz Luhrmann's EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert and films about subjects such as John Candy, teen series Degrassi and music festival Lilith Fair.
The festival takes place from the 4 to 14 September.

You're plunged into a wistful pixel art depiction of Noughties America, asked to pick a backstory for your young character, including what their summer job is and how well they get on with their parents, and let loose in a boxy saloon with no particular objective other than maybe – if you feel like it – making it over to a festival a few hundred miles away. You could go anywhere. The backbreaking load of life's accumulating responsibilities has yet to find its way onto your shoulders. Time feels infinite, but there's also the lingering sense that it's precious, and that older people view you with envy. How should you spend it? Thankfully Keep Driving doesn't require you to have the answers, or indeed any particular plan. Things have a way of happening to you once you hit the road, from hitchhikers who exchange their mix CDs and snacks for safe passage to boss fight events against herds of sheep and tractors. You might like The precise mechanics of those confrontations are a bit fiddly. They involve matching icons on your dashboard to those on your skills, which hang down from your rear view mirror like air fresheners, and if that sounds a bit abstract, that's only because it absolutely is. Some of the inherent satisfaction of finally working your way past a wilfully slow-moving vehicle is lost in the fight system, but seeing these encounters depicted as boss battles in the first place is inspired stuff. There are a variety of vehicles you can embark on Keep Driving's freeform adventure with, although all but one of them are locked the first time you play. Put the hours in, though, and you can start a new adventure with a lumbering pickup truck, the kind whose suspension forks take a full two seconds to bottom out, and an un-named and only slightly beaten up muscle car. It may not be the most dependable choice for a cross-country, heavy mileage road trip, but that's the nice thing about being a young kid on a summer adventure: you've got license to make those mistakes. If you decided that some experience working as a mechanic was in your backstory, you can roll your sleeves up and fix it yourself. If you've got a good relationship with your parents, they'll come and pick you up. Or maybe your hitchhiker friend happens to know their way around an engine bay. The game pays attention to all the decisions you make along the journey, even the ones you don't realise you're making, and then resurfacing them down the road in the next scenario. That makes every journey feel like it's been written by you, and it makes Keep Driving feel immersive and full of agency and anecdotes, in a way that's extremely rare in a driving game. And if that doesn't sell you: you select songs by manually operating a CD player. We were handed a disc by a stranger in a camper van outside a petrol station, slid it into the player and let the early Noughties jangly emo music ring out. How's that for immersive? EXCLUSIVE It was supposed to make train travel easier but horrors of deadly Amtrak crash still haunts passengers
It was supposed to be a day of celebration for passengers aboard the Amtrak Cascades 501 train as it traveled on its first day of a new rail route in Washington State until disaster struck that left three people dead and 70 injured. Quincy Linton, now 20, was sitting on the train on his way to visit his sister and meet his newborn niece. In one moment, he was enjoying the ride and in the next sprawled out on the train tracks dazed, bloodied and wounded. The 12-car train careened off the overpass during the busy morning rush hour traffic onto Interstate 5 crushing eight vehicles - five cars and two semi-trucks - causing a chaotic and horrific scene filled with police, firefighters and emergency responders. Seventy-seven passengers were aboard the train including five Amtrak workers and a Talgo, Inc. technician. Linton's story of survival is part of a new weekly limited series produced by NBC News Studios, Survival Mode that is slated to air on July 28. 'I remember being on the ground. Rocks falling from the train and the train dangling down. I see blood gushing down onto my hands onto my shoes onto my ground. I was just telling myself, 'I want to go to sleep,'' he said in an exclusive clip shared with Daily Mail ahead of the show airing. 'I remember some lady that came to pick me up. She was just telling me, don't go to sleep. Stay up.' She told me, 'I'm strong. Stay up. I was asking her where my dad's at?' Each episode of Survival Mode focuses on a different disaster with firsthand accounts from survivors and rare archival footage. The Maui wildfires, the Joplin Tornado, Superstorm Sandy, and the sinking of the Costa Concordia are among the disasters featured in the series. Good Samaritan Tanya Porter was driving home after her shift as a nurse and immediately rushed to the scene to help those caught in the mangled train. 'There was a gentlemen laying the ground underneath the train that was dangling. I went over. I was trying to assess what was going on. And people are yelling at me to move out of the way because they're still fuel on the ground. It's not safe,' she recalled in the new show nearly eight years after the horror. She told emergency responders, 'Wait, we can't leave these people here. There are several other people on the ground underneath the train. So we can't just leave them here. If the train falls, they'll be gone.' Preliminary information from the data recorder showed that, the train was traveling at 78 mph nearly 50 mph over the speed limit in the 30 mile per hour zone, according to the 2019 Railroad Accident Report from the National Transportation Safety Board. The engineer driving the train was near DuPont, Washington and was crossing Interstate 5 around 7.32am when he went past the advanced speed restriction sign roughly two miles before the dangerous curve. The time of the crash was 7.34am on December 18, 2017. The engineer planned to brake at the sign about one mile before the curve but as the train approached the headlights washed out the sign, and the engineer missed the breaking point, as per a report. The alarm sounded off, however, the engineer was reportedly unfamiliar with the charger locomotive and appeared not to react to the warnings. Once he realized the grave situation he was in, it was too late. The goal of the new railway line was to separate passenger and freight traffic and reduce congestion giving commuters a faster ride and shorter trip. It was a joint partnership between Amtrak, who operated the train and state and local authorities in Oregon and Washington. The new line would save ten minutes in commuting time from Seattle to Portland compared with the previous route used by Cascades Amtrak. However, the train derailed a short distance from where the new route merged with the previous route. On the morning of the crash there were many safety measures that were reportedly not in place that contributed to the devastating crash, according to multiple reports. Days before the inaugural run, more than a dozen engineers and conductors told their supervisors they did not feel sufficiently trained on the new route. The engineer driving the doomed Amtrak Cascades 501 was a certified engineer working for the rail company since 2013 and was described as experienced and a conscientious and safe driver. The engineer told investigators he took seven to 10 observational training trips on the new route, but was only at the controls for three one-way trips, and only one of those was in the direction the train was traveling when it crashed, according to an interim report released by the National Transportation Safety Board, CNN previously reported. The chaotic scene as several railcars hit oncoming vehicles along the busy roadway during morning rush hour around 7.30am December 18, 2017 Though he did not speak to CNN, according to the report he told the NTSB 'he would not have gotten behind the throttle if he had any reservations about his readiness to operate the train'. They told CNN that they felt 'dangerously unprepared' and training was rushed and 'totally inadequate'. Some of the engineers disclosed that they were not getting enough practice during the brief training runs. They needed more time to familiarize themselves with the controls and the new route - and revealed that the new locomotive used in the inaugural was something they weren't as accustomed too. After the devastation, damages were estimated to be more than $25.8 million. The NTSB partly blamed Sound Transit, the public transit agency serving the Seattle metropolitan areas in Washington State for failing to implement safety improvements before the new Portland to Seattle route, according to local news outlet OPB. More than 35 people sued Amtrak and several won multimillion dollar suits. In November 2021, four years after the deadly train crash, OPB reported that the railway has resumed operations with new safety measures including, an 'Activated Positive Train Control,' a system that uses GPS to slow a train in dangerous conditions.
