KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) supports the country's gross export growth target, averaging 5.8 per cent annually, to reach RM2.09 trillion by 2030.
In a statement today, it said it will continue to play a strategic role in expanding global trade networks and intensifying export promotion in high-impact sectors aligned with MADANI economic principles.
MATRADE chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the agency's initiatives will be coordinated to support the government's aspirations under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
"Priority will be given to strengthening the nation's export competitiveness by empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), exploring new markets, enhancing product innovation, and adapting to an increasingly complex and challenging global trade landscape by embracing digital and sustainable business models."
"These efforts align with the 13MP's aspirations, which emphasise the importance of driving economic growth via increasing exports, strengthening economic inclusivity, and incorporating technology and innovation in strategic sectors," he said.
Meanwhile, MATRADE chief executive officer Datuk Seri Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz said the export promotion programme focuses on key sectors such as electrical and electronic goods, halal, digital, agriculture, franchised products, and services.
"These efforts also leverage MATRADE's network of overseas offices to help Malaysian companies effectively foray into international markets," he added.
According to MATRADE, expanding export matching programmes, foreign market guidance, and the provision of capacity-building programmes such as seminars, workshops, and related courses will be implemented for MSMEs.
It will also take strategic steps in planning export development and promotion programmes that align with government aspirations, particularly in developing high-growth, high-value industries. These include the electrical and electronics sector, games and digital animation, halal products, modern agriculture, global services and franchising.
"MATRADE will focus on exploring new high-potential markets such as South America, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, involving more participation in free trade agreements, business matching programmes and export acceleration missions.
"The introduction of the National Trade Blueprint 2.0 will serve as a new strategic roadmap document to coordinate policies, enhance implementation efficiency, and strengthen the export ecosystem," he said. - Bernama

NexG plunges, Classita surges on RM77mil deal

PETALING JAYA: In what appears to be a protest to NexG Bhd acquiring a major stake in Classita Holdings Bhd , shareholders dumped the shares of the MyKad supplier, causing the stock to plunge nearly 30% and lose over half-a-billion ringgit in market capitalisation. In contrast, the share price of construction firm Classita jumped by 12.5%, reaching nine sen a share – a level last seen two years ago. Cautious on the RM77mil equity acquisition in Classita, BIMB Research downgraded its rating on NexG to 'sell', pointing out that the immediate risk-reward ratio had turned unfavourable. 'We believe investors should be mindful of the slow-burn nature of property earnings recognition, integration complexity, and the drag of non-core diversification. 'We keep our target price at 45 sen,' stated the research house in an early morning note to clients yesterday. This was before the stock plunged to 37.5 sen by market close yesterday, making it the second top loser on Bursa Malaysia. On Aug 8, NexG – formerly known as Datasonic Group Bhd – announced the acquisition of a 32.61% stake and 414.31 million warrants C in Classita for RM76.78mil. With this acquisition, NexG emerged as the single largest major shareholder of Classita. It also marked NexG's entry into the construction and property development sectors. NexG chairman and chief executive officer Datuk Hanifah Noordin said, in a statement earlier, that the entry into the property and construction sectors is a 'strategic and timely move' for the company. 'We intend to play a more active and visible role in Malaysia's national development by leveraging our financial strength, government networks, and proven track record in mission-critical projects to support the country's housing and infrastructure agenda. 'We view Classita as a strong fit for this ambition, given its credentials and readiness to participate in government-linked projects,' he said. NexG also highlighted Classita's collaboration with Lion Pacific Sdn Bhd to jointly participate in the mass rail transit three project. Lion Pacific, an engineering firm with an extensive track record in railway systems and civil works, will lead the overall system package. Classita, under the proposed arrangement, is expected to undertake the SY303 work package, which involves the supply, testing, and commissioning of electric trains and supporting systems. 'Should the project be awarded to the parties, this strategic partnership will mark Classita's entry into high-value transport infrastructure delivery and strengthen its credentials as a credible contender for long-term public-sector engineering contracts. This is fully aligned with the Madani development agenda. 'In parallel, Classita is advancing plans for a proposed Perumahan Penjawat Awam Malaysia housing project on its Ulu Klang land, providing affordable and quality homes for civil servants. This aligns closely with Madani's emphasis on equitable housing access and targeted community upliftment.' BIMB Research is 'neutral' on NexG's entry into Classita as the near-term earnings impact is minimal, while the long-term execution risk remains high given Classita's volatile track record.

DRB-Hicom plans to acquire Spirit Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: DRB-Hicom Bhd plans to acquire the Malaysian operations of aerospace manufacturer Spirit AeroSystems – the world's largest standalone aerostructures company with an enterprise value of US$95.2mil. In a statement, the conglomerate said its wholly-owned subsidiary, Composites Technology Research Malaysia Sdn Bhd (CTRM) had entered into a conditional share purchase agreement with Spirit AeroSystems Inc and Spirit AeroSystems International Holdings, Inc. The acquisition is expected to be completed by year-end, making Spirit AeroSystems Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Spirit Malaysia) a wholly-owned subsidiary of CTRM. The purchase consideration is set to be fully satisfied in cash, which is expected to be funded through bank borrowings. Based on the latest audited consolidated financial statements for financial year 2024, Spirit Malaysia posted a profit after tax of RM70.1mil and net assets of RM770.5mil. According to DRB-Hicom, the acquisition represents a strategic opportunity to further enhance CTRM's competitive position in the aerospace industry by enhancing its aerostructures expertise. 'This would contribute towards improved scale, efficiency, and growth in various areas that would elevate CTRM's presence in key aerospace programmes,' the company said. The conglomerate added that it would also deepen its relationships with global original equipment manufacturers, while expanding CTRM's relationships with Airbus for its A220, A320, and A350 programmes, and with Boeing on the 737 and 787 programmes. 'At the same time, CTRM will enhance its presence across the supply chain and be better positioned for long-term competitiveness and sustainable growth in an increasingly challenging and dynamic aerospace market,' DRB-Hicom said. CTRM is known for developing and producing aircraft composites components for aerospace and non aerospace applications as well as offering a range of support services such as testing laboratory facilities, composites engineering and supplier management services. Spirit Malaysia supplies key components and other assemblies for Airbus and Boeing marquee programmes, including A220, A320/A321, A350, B737 and B787. In addition to its aerospace composite and metallic assembly expertise, it also provides engineering services, supply chain management services and shared services. Spirit Malaysia is also a key customer of CTRM, contributing 54.1% towards the latter's consolidated revenue for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024. The acquisition followed news of Boeing receiving regulatory approval from the UK's Competition and Markets Authority for its planned acquisition of Wichita-based Spirit AeroSystems. According to reports, this meant investigations will not continue on to 'phase two'. Initial investigation began in June 2025 and had a deadline for the end of this month. The deal is reportedly expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year. At market close yesterday, DRB-Hicom's share price was 82 sen.

Five 13MP pillars to watch

PETALING JAYA: As Malaysia aims to become a high-income, value-creating economy under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), five key trends are expected to shape the country's economic trajectory from 2026 to 2030, according to Maybank Investment Bank Research (Maybank IB). The five areas to watch, the research house said, are: a sustained investment upcycle; improvements in workers' and household incomes; fiscal consolidation and structural reforms; a push for productivity and innovation; and legislative reforms to strengthen governance. These trends are seen as critical to achieving the 13MP's targeted gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 4.5% to 5% annually, slightly below the 5.1% average recorded under the 12MP. The plan also underscores the importance of continued reforms and economic restructuring to drive inclusive and sustainable growth. 'Our investment upcycle thesis remains a theme under the 13MP. This is in view of the RM611bil public sector-related investment allocation, namely the RM430bil federal government's gross development expenditure, RM120bil from government-linked investment companies (GLICs) and RM61bil under private-public partnership,' the research house said in a report. It said a key highlight of the 13MP is the reaffirmation and continuation of major infrastructure projects such as the Penang Mutiara light rail transit (LRT), Johor Baru's elevated autonomous rapid transit, and the Asean Rail Connectivity Project. According to Maybank IB, sustaining private consumption growth will largely be dependent on raising workers' and household incomes. However, the research house noted a lack of real wage and salary growth on a per-worker basis, limiting income gains despite rising living costs. Monthly wage distribution remains heavily skewed toward the lower end, with more than a quarter of workers earning less than RM2,000 per month, and nearly half earning below the recently adopted living wage benchmark of RM3,100 set by government-linked companies (GLCs) and GLICs. The 13MP outlines several labour market interventions to raise incomes and support medium-term consumer spending growth. These include introduction of a two-tier minimum wage, scaling up the progressive wage policy, and encouraging large private companies to voluntarily adopt decent living wage practices – as already implemented by 34 GLCs and GLICs, which have set a living wage of RM3,100 per month. Notably, the 13MP stated that a multi-tier foreign worker levy is targeted for implementation in 2026, alongside plans to reduce the 'ceiling' for foreign workers' share of the total workforce to 10% by 2030, down from 15% currently. These measures are expected to raise employer costs, necessitating improvements in productivity and efficiency. The 13MP sets an ambitious target of 3.6% annual labour productivity growth over the next five years – a recurring goal also seen in the 11MP and 12MP, noted the research house. On fiscal consolidation, Maybank IB said cutting the budget deficit-to-GDP ratio to below 3% over the next five years is crucial to achieving the federal government's debt-to-GDP ratio of 60% by 2030. For 2025, the deficit consolidation is on track, with a target of RM80bil, or 3.8% of GDP. The next main fiscal reform on the agenda is subsidy rationalisation. 'It is also worth noting that the government is incurring savings in fuel subsidies thanks to the drop in crude oil prices, as well as firmer ringgit versus US dollar,' said Maybank IB. Beyond subsidy reforms, pension system reform is another key area to watch, given the sharp rise in government retirement spending over the past two decades. The proposed reform is expected to offer new options for existing civil servants, particularly younger staff, and shift new hires from the current 'defined benefit' pension scheme to a 'defined contribution' model with improved contract terms.
