‘Fight to protect democracy': Opposition leaders react to detention during ‘vote chori' protest
The Delhi Police said it had detained Opposition MPs including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut and TMC's Sagarika Ghose, during the protest. No one had sought permission for the protest march to the Election Commission, police said.
Gandhi said the Election Commission is silent as the truth is before the entire nation, after his charge that over one lakh votes in an assembly constituency in Karnataka were found to be fake in a research conducted by his party.
'They (EC) cannot talk as the truth is before the entire nation,' he said as he was being taken away in a bus by the police. 'This fight is not political—it is a fight to protect democracy, the Constitution, and the right to 'one person, one vote',' he said.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said the protest against 'vote chori' and SIR is a fight to protect people's right to vote and a struggle to save democracy. In a post on X, he said, 'BJP's cowardly dictatorship will not work. This is a fight to protect people's right to vote. This is a struggle to save democracy. The allies of the INDIA coalition will surely expose this BJP conspiracy to shred the Constitution.'

Democracy was being 'assaulted and murdered right outside Parliament,' alleged Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh. He told PTI that Opposition MPs wanted to take out a peaceful march to the EC office as a mark of protest against the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls, but were stopped by the police. 'We had already written to the EC that all MPs collectively wanted to hand over a memorandum to the EC,' he said. 'Chunav Aayog is Chunav Aayog, it cannot be churao aayog,' Ramesh told PTI.

Congress MP KC Venugopal on Monday posted on X saying, 'This is nothing but a desperate attempt to silence the Opposition on this burning issue of saving democracy from mass rigging. Such intimidation will not work for us, and we will continue to fight for the people's inalienable right to vote.'

Wearing white caps with a red cross on the words 'SIR' and 'vote chori', the protesting MPs started their march from Parliament's Makar Dwar raising slogans against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar and 'vote chori' while carrying placards and banners.

Delhi HC orders reconstruction of 1984 anti-Sikh riots case records to ensure fair trial
The Delhi High Court has ordered the reconstruction of four-decade-old trial records in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, saying the victims' and society's right to a fair investigation and trial cannot be compromised by missing files or flawed earlier proceedings. The directive, issued to the trial court, concerns the acquittal of five men including former Congress councillor Balwan Khokhar in the killing of four Sikhs in Ghaziabad's Raj Nagar. The court said the available material revealed 'several lacunae' in both the investigation and trial. The murders took place on November 1, 1984, a day after then PM Indira Gandhi's assassination. Three women had alleged that their husbands and son were burnt alive. In 1986, the trial court acquitted Khokhar and four others, citing lack of evidence. Now, nearly 40 years later, a bench of justices Subramanian Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar WHEN has acted on petitions challenging the correctness of that verdict. The bench had earlier observed that the 1986 judgment appeared 'unsustainable' and noted it was being relied on in appeals by Khokhar, Captain Bhagmal, Girdhari Lal, Mahender Yadav, and Krishan Khokhar against their 2013 conviction for murdering five Sikhs in the same locality. Neither the state nor the victims had appealed the 1986 acquittal at the time. The court said the available material -- composite challans and the final judgments -- revealed 'several lacunae' in both the investigation and trial. Key eyewitnesses were never examined because summons were sent to addresses destroyed or abandoned during the riots. 'A composite challan has been filed for several cases, prima facie reflecting a perfunctory investigation,' the court said in its 66-page order, adding that the matter 'cannot be left to rest at this juncture.' Citing Supreme Court precedent in Abhai Raj Singh, the bench ruled that the trial court must reconstruct the records of Sessions Cases 31 and 32 of 1986, and only then can the High Court assess whether the original acquittals can stand. The matter will be heard next on September 1. 'The valuable rights of victims and the society at large to a free and fair investigation as also a real trial cannot be allowed to be compromised as a result of fait accompli,' the court observed. Senior advocate HS Phoolka, appearing for the complainants, argued that the 1986 investigation and trial were 'thoroughly inadequate and sketchy' and urged that the matters be remanded for retrial. Amicus curiae Siddharth Aggarwal asserted that the court, before giving any findings into the correctness of the judgements passed by the additional sessions judges, was under a mandate to call for the records, examine the same and only then proceed ahead in the matter. He submitted that the trial court records had been weeded out and it was inappropriate for the court to proceed further with the matter without getting the records. Khokhar's counsel had asserted that ordering a re-trial or further investigation, when the records have been weeded out, would violate his client's right to free trial. In a separate 26-page judgment, the same bench directed the authorities to widely publicise the various government compensation schemes available for victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. It further instructed them to verify victims' claims within 16 weeks of receiving them and to disburse the compensation within two months thereafter.

Pak raps India for 'twisting' Asim Munir's remark
Asim Munir ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Monday criticised India's ministry of external affairs, accusing it of "twisting" the remarks made by Army Chief Asim Munir during his visit to the US. "Pakistan strongly rejects the immature remarks made by the Indian ministry of external affairs earlier today...," the foreign office said while responding to media queries regarding the MEA statement. The foreign office also accused it of "distorting facts" and "twisting statements out of context." It stressed the Indian narrative of an alleged "nuclear blackmail' is a "misleading and self-serving construct", as Pakistan remains firmly opposed to the use or threat of use of force.

The committee, it is learnt, was told by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri that US President Donald Trump's imposition of steep tariff on Indian exports was not just a response to New Delhi's purchase of Russian crude oil but could also be connected to its presence in BRICS. New Delhi: The Centre told a parliamentary committee Monday that New Delhi will convey to Washington DC its displeasure over Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, delivering nuclear threats from the soil of the United States, sources told ThePrint. Sources said Misri told the MPs that India would not tolerate such nuclear blackmail. ThePrint exclusively reported on 10 August that Munir, speaking at an event in the US, said, 'we are a nuclear nation, if we think we are going down, we'll take half the world down with us.' 'India's position will be conveyed to the US,' sources quoted Misri as having said. Misri is also learnt to have told the panel that the US's trade deficit with India may also have been a trigger for Trump, who first announced the imposition of 25 percent tariff on Indian exports to the US and later raised it to 50 percent citing the 'direct or indirect import of Russian oil'. The foreign secretary is learnt to have added that India will not cross certain 'red lines'—a reference to US's demand for India to open up its agriculture and dairy sectors—in its trade negotiations with Washington. 'The three issues that India believes could have acted as a trigger for Trump are purchase of Russian crude oil, trade deficit and India's presence in the BRICS multilateral grouping. India's position is very clear. Misri said New Delhi never considered BRICS to be an anti-Western bloc but believes it can be categorised, if at all, as a non-Western bloc,' an MP who was part of the meeting told ThePrint. Sources in the Indian establishment have previously argued that New Delhi's sale of processed Russian crude oil was necessitated by various European countries, who stopped importing from Moscow, becoming dependent on supplies from India. Apart from Misri, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal was also present in the meeting that lasted over three hours. The officials told the MPs that the latest developments would not have any impact on India's 'friendship' with the US. 'Trade is just one aspect of India-US relations. There are many positives also,' one official is learnt to have told the committee. The officials added that India's trade relations, including defence purchases, would not be affected by Trump's announcements. In response to questions from MPs, they underlined that India is not trying to 'enhance' or recalibrate its relations with China or Russia in light of the US President's remarks and announcements.
