Pahang businessman loses RM2.2m in back-to-back Facebook investment scams

Malay Mail5 days ago
KUANTAN, July 24 — A businessman lost over RM2.2 million in separate scams just months apart this year, after falling for fake investment schemes advertised on Facebook.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said that in May, the 45-year-old man was lured by a scheme and contacted an individual via WhatsApp.
He then made 18 transactions totaling RM1.86 million to six bank accounts between May 14 and July 15, 2025.
'The victim received a return of over RM20,000, which convinced him to continue investing. However, last Tuesday, he was asked to make an additional RM88,000 payment for a 'fast withdrawal' process.
'He refused, and checks via the Semak Mule portal revealed the bank accounts involved had criminal records,' he said in a statement today.
Yahaya added that previously, the victim fell for a similar scam, losing RM440,000 through 13 transactions between February and May this year.
'In this case, he did not receive any returns and was instead asked to pay a 20 percent 'tax' to withdraw the funds. He refused after suspecting it was a scam.
'As a result, the businessman lost over RM2.2 million, comprising his savings and money borrowed from friends,' he said.
He added that the victim lodged a police report at the Maran police headquarters yesterday, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — Bernama

Penang govt identifying locations for floating solar projects

State infrastructure, transport and digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said areas such as the Teluk Bahang and Mengkuang dams were potential locations for the floating solar farms. (Bernama pic) GEORGE TOWN : The Penang government plans to develop floating solar projects in line with its efforts to achieve a target of 10% renewable energy by 2030. State infrastructure, transport and digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the project was a suitable alternative in expanding the renewable energy sources due to the state's land constraints and the high cost of developing ground-mounted solar farms. Presently, he said, his team is considering strategic locations with potential to implement the project, including dam areas such as the Teluk Bahang dam and Mengkuang dam. 'Dams are most suitable for a floating solar project in terms of area and water stability, unlike the sea where there are unique challenges and even the panel installation methods are different. 'However, many matters need to be examined first, considering that the dams are sources of drinking water supply and are under the management of the Penang Water Supply Corporation. 'So, it requires approval and also more thorough study,' he told reporters after attending the Malaysian Photovoltaic Sustainable Energy Association Solar Roadshow 2025 here today. Zairil said the floating solar project would be important for the upcoming Silicon Island, with the area being actively developed and required renewable energy sources as an alternative energy supply. Therefore, he said, the state government would try to expedite the implementation of the project, especially to support development on the artificial island as the state's new green technology hub. 'It is really necessary for Silicon Island because the first area to be developed is the technology park. In two years, the factory will start operating, so we need renewable energy, especially solar.'

Pahang MACC director Shukor Mahmud confirmed the arrests of four men when contacted. PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Pahang has arrested two senior police officers and a retired officer for allegedly soliciting and receiving RM110,000 in bribes to protect drug and ketum distribution activities in the state. Bernama reported that a source said the three men were arrested at around 8.30pm yesterday after arriving at MACC's Temerloh branch to provide statements. A fourth suspect was arrested earlier. 'One of the suspects is believed to have received monthly bribes amounting to between RM4,000 and RM5,000 through bank transfers into his personal account, which he then distributed to others,' the source said. One of the suspects had been released on MACC bail after his statement was recorded. The remaining three are currently under a seven-day remand order until Aug 4.
