China's first Legoland opens to tourists in Shanghai

Kuwait Times5 days ago
Thousands of local tourists poured into China's first-ever Legoland as it opened its gates in Shanghai on Saturday, the latest theme park hoping to capitalize on a domestic tourism boom. The Chinese branch of the British-owned theme park franchise is the biggest Legoland in the world. It drew in early customers who flocked to attractions including a miniature train ride and a dragon-themed rollercoaster.
'I personally love to play with Lego blocks and we have many sets at home... so I wanted to come to Legoland at the earliest opportunity,' said Shi, a 35-year-old resident of nearby city Hangzhou, who was visiting the park with his wife and child. Despite the Chinese economy's sluggish growth in recent years, domestic tourist spending grew 18.6 percent in the first quarter of this year compared to the previous year, according to statistics.
'Ever since the pandemic, I've made very few trips abroad,' said Shi, adding his family now travels to theme parks around China 'many times a year'. Eager Lego fans rushed into the park as soon as it opened, wearing themed shirts and waving branded flags as they enjoyed the 318,000-square-metre (78.5-acre) compound in scorching temperatures.

Beijing has announced subsidies intended to make travelling within the country more affordable for Chinese citizens, and is pushing local governments to heavily market their attractions on social media. Companies have taken note of the wider local tourism boom and stepped up their plans in China. A new 'Spider-Man' attraction at Shanghai Disneyland broke ground in May, while Warner Brothers is set to open a Harry Potter experience in Shanghai by 2027.
Toy giant Hasbro said this week its giant Peppa Pig park in the city was now 'in the phase of creative design'. Chinese collectable toy maker Pop Mart has also opened an attraction in Beijing featuring life-sized versions of its popular Labubu toys.
'The various provinces are putting a lot of effort into expanding their tourism industries, and all of them have special attractions,' said Xu, a 34-year-old parent visiting Legoland on Saturday with his children. But profitability remains a problem, especially for local companies with less brand recognition. As of late 2024, around 40 percent of parks were still failing to turn a profit, according to state media reports. Yet analysts point to a growing population of retirees and job market changes as key factors pushing more locals to visit domestic attractions. 'The labor market is turning more flexible,' said Ernan Cui, China consumer analyst at Gavekal Research. 'More people have leisure time to travel around.' - AFP

US, China hold ‘positive' talks at ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting

ASEAN describes tariffs as 'counterproductive' and threat to regional growth KUALA LUMPUR: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi had a 'positive' meeting in Malaysia on Friday, both sides said, in an apparent bid to ease tensions between the rival powers. Rubio and Wang's first face-to-face meeting since US President Donald Trump returned to office came as Washington and Beijing are locked in disputes ranging from trade to Taiwan—and both countries vie for greater influence in the region. 'I thought it was a very constructive and positive meeting,' Rubio told reporters after the hour-long talks in capital Kuala Lumpur, but he stressed: 'It was not a negotiation.' 'I think we left it feeling as there's some areas we're gonna be able to work together on.' Rubio was also optimistic that a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping would happen. 'There's a strong desire on both sides to do it,' Rubio said, adding no date was set. Beijing said in a statement 'both sides agreed that the meeting was positive, pragmatic and constructive'. Both countries agreed to 'enhance communication and dialogue through diplomatic channels... and explore expanding cooperation areas while managing differences,' China's foreign ministry said. The sit-down between Wang and Rubio, a longtime China hawk, came as Asian foreign ministers wrapped up three days of talks at an Association of Southeast Asian Nations gathering in Kuala Lumpur. Top diplomats from Russia, the European Union, Australia, Britain and Canada also attended. US officials said ahead of Rubio's first trip to the region as secretary of state that Washington was 'prioritizing' its commitment to East and Southeast Asia. While US tariffs overshadowed the gathering, Rubio said he was 'warmly received' by Asian partners as he sought to placate concerns over the duties. 'If you look at some of these trade deficits, they're massive. That has to be addressed,' Rubio said at the end of his whirlwind trip. 'Everybody here is a mature leader who understands that that's not sustainable.' Trump has threatened punitive tariffs ranging from 20 to 50 percent against more than 20 countries, many in Asia, if they do not strike deals with Washington by August 1. ASEAN described the tariffs as 'counterproductive' and a threat to regional growth, according to a joint statement released Friday. Long-time US ally Japan faces a 25 percent across-the-board levy, separate from similar charges already imposed on cars, steel and aluminum. South Korea faces a similar tariff. Rubio met his Japanese and South Korean counterparts on Friday, with his spokeswoman Tammy Bruce calling it an 'indispensable relationship'. Wang told Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim earlier Friday that Washington's 'unilateral imposition of high tariffs is irresponsible and unpopular,' according to a foreign ministry statement. Malaysia's Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan told a closing news conference the ASEAN meeting mentioned 'each country's concerns respectively' regarding tariffs. Tensions between the United States and China have ratcheted up since Trump took office in January, with both countries engaging in a tariff war that briefly sent duties on each other's exports sky-high. Washington hit China with additional levies of 145 percent on its goods as both sides engaged in tit-for-tat escalation, while China's countermeasures on US goods reached 125 percent. Beijing and Washington agreed in May to temporarily slash the staggering tariffs—an outcome Trump dubbed a 'total reset'. However, deep mistrust remains between the two countries, with each suspecting the other of trying to weaken its influence. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accused China in late May of 'credibly preparing to potentially use military force to alter the balance of power' in the Asia-Pacific region. He also claimed that Beijing 'trains every day' to invade self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory. In response, Chinese diplomats accused the United States of using the Taiwan issue to 'contain China' and called on Washington to stop 'playing with fire'. – AFP

Russia says foreign minister Lavrov met Kim Jong Un

WONSAN: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (center) shaking hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (left) in Wonsan on July 12, 2025. -- AFP MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his visit to the secretive country and key Moscow ally. Lavrov 'was received' by Kim Jong Un, Russia's foreign ministry said on Telegram, posting a video of two men shaking hands and greeting with a hug. Lavrov told Kim that Russia's President Vladimir Putin 'hopes for continued direct contacts in the very near future,' according to the Russian state agency TASS. Russian and North Korean state media announced the visit earlier, saying Lavrov would stay until Sunday. It is the latest in a series of high-profile trips by top Moscow officials as both countries deepen military and political ties over Russia's offensive in Ukraine. Pyongyang sent thousands of troops to Russia's Kursk region to oust Kyiv's forces and provided the Russian army with artillery shells and missiles. Earlier on Saturday, Lavrov met with his counterpart Choe Son Hui and said that North Korean officials had 'reaffirmed their full support for all objectives' of the offensive in Ukraine, TASS reported. He also thanked the 'heroic' North Korean soldiers. Both sides 'emphasized their determination to jointly counter the hegemonic aspirations of extra-regional players, which are leading to escalating tensions in Northeast Asia and throughout the Asia-Pacific region,' Russia's foreign ministry said. Lavrov met with his counterpart in Wonsan, a city on the country's east coast where a massive resort was opened earlier this month. Ahead of the visit, Russia announced that it would begin twice-a-week flights between Moscow and Pyongyang. Lavrov lauded Wonsan as 'a good tourist attraction,' adding: 'We hope it will be popular not only with local citizens, but also with Russians.' The two heavily sanctioned nations signed a military deal last year, including a mutual defense clause, during a rare visit by Vladimir Putin to North Korea. – AFP

Deanship of Diplomatic Corps organizes farewell for 6 outgoing envoys

KUWAIT CITY, July 12: The Deanship of the Diplomatic Corps in Kuwait organized a farewell ceremony for six ambassadors who completed their assignments in the country. The ceremony was held at the St. Regis Hotel with a large number of diplomats and officials, headed by a representative of the Protocol Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Haif Al-Huwailah, in attendance. Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of Tajikistan to Kuwait Zubaydullah Zubaydov expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to the outgoing ambassadors for their efforts during their tenure. He praised the agreements and initiatives they achieved to support bilateral relations and deepen the bonds of friendship and understanding. He affirmed that the diplomatic corps in Kuwait is characterized by unique cooperation among its members and a spirit of teamwork, which contributed to making every farewell an opportunity to celebrate achievement and loyalty. He stated 'We wish you a prosperous future filled with success. Kuwait will always remain a second home for you.' He highlighted the influential role of US Ambassador Karen Sasahara, whose tenure witnessed the strong start of technological cooperation between the two countries, with companies such as Google Cloud and Johnson & Johnson entering the Kuwaiti market, in addition to the launching of strategic partnerships with Microsoft. He praised the pivotal role played by British Ambassador Belinda Lewis during her four years in Kuwait, specifically her active participation in strategic dialogues and organizing high-level visits to and from the two countries -- most notably the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh and the celebration of the 125th anniversary of diplomatic relations. He pointed out her contributions to strengthening defense, humanitarian, and commercial cooperation, with trade exchanges reaching more than £6 billion annually. He also put the spotlight on her support for educational and cultural projects and symbolic visits, such as hosting the Red Arrows. He touched on the initiatives undertaken by Canadian Ambassador Aliya Mawani to promote humanitarian values and social justice, as well as her support for education and gender equality. He lauded the grand celebration that Mawani organized, marking the 60th anniversary of Canadian-Kuwaiti relations, which included artistic and sporting events. He noted the achievements of Egyptian Ambassador Osama Shaltout, which included five presidential visits; the signing of more than 10 cooperation agreements in the housing, aviation and education sectors; and the increase of Kuwaiti investments in Egypt to more than $20 billion. He mentioned the ambassador's role in caring for the Egyptian community, his innovation of a digital employment system, his contributions to cultural initiatives such as the 'Together in Love with Kuwait' festival, and his active participation in humanitarian issues, particularly the support for Gaza. He paid tribute to Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bhutan Chitem Tenzin, who concluded a four-year diplomatic career that witnessed the signing of the historic air transport agreement, three visits by the King of Bhutan to Kuwait, and the expansion of the Bhutanese community to include more than 10,000 individuals. He then commended Head of the NATO Office at the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative Regional Center Nora Elise Beck, who led the office during its most active period since inception, organizing 74 official events to address security, energy and women empowerment issues.
