Alabama football announces 2025 Homecoming game
Unusually late on the calendar for Homecoming, the game will serve as an opportunity for the Crimson Tide to avenge a critical 24-3 loss to the Sooners last season. Alabama has won its Homecoming game for 22 consecutive seasons, defeating Missouri 34-0 for Homecoming last year. Alabama's all-time record on Homecoming is 89-13-1.
Homecoming events typically include a Friday-night pep rally and a parade on Saturday morning. Former Crimson Tide star running back Shaun Alexander served as the parade's grand marshal last year.
Alabama has also announced the annual A-Day game to conclude spring practice will be held April 12. UA will open the 2025 season at Florida State on Aug. 30.

Saban's last quarterback: Alabama's Ty Simpson carries the weight of history, expectation
There's an old line about power in Alabama. The governor is only the fifth-most important person in the state, behind — in order — the head football coaches of Alabama and Auburn, followed by the starting quarterbacks of both schools. In other words, Ty Simpson — who's spent the last three years in Tuscaloosa as a backup — is about to become one of the most significant figures in the state of Alabama, and by association, college football as a whole. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer named Simpson the starter in a team meeting earlier this week, codifying Simpson's long, long, long rise to the throne. The fact that Simpson is still in an Alabama uniform is impressive enough in the portal-on-a-moment's-notice era, but the role he occupies in Alabama history has some small — for now — significance as well. Simpson is the last quarterback recruited by Nick Saban, one of the dwindling links to Alabama's glorious 2000s dynasty. He was the No. 2 recruit in the 2022 class behind Clemson's Cade Klubnik, and redshirted behind Heisman Trophy winner and future Carolina Panther Bryce Young in 2022. Simpson was unable to beat out Jalen Milroe in the spring of 2023 for the starting slot, a job Milroe held for the final year of Saban's reign and last year's nine-win debut for DeBoer. With Milroe off to the Seattle Seahawks, Simpson had the inside line on the job, though he still needed to beat out redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and true freshman Keelon Russell. Simpson impressed DeBoer and new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb enough that they signaled in the spring that the job was his, and he kept up the pace throughout the summer. 'Ty throws a catchable ball,' DeBoer said last month at SEC Media Days. 'He's smart. He's been in college football now going into year four. He's seen the ups and downs. He's got great relationships with the team. He's a leader that way. He's really owned things on another level.' Simpson has projected confidence to Alabama fans. 'When I get on the field, Alabama fans should know I'm going to do everything it takes to win,' Simpson said in a recent video posted by his father Jason, head coach at UT-Martin. 'I'm going to make sure I'm the toughest guy on the field. I'm going to make sure I win. I'm going to make sure I know everything that's coming. I'm going to get the guys around me the ball.' Listed at 6-2 and 208 pounds, Simpson has little actual in-game experience, throwing for exactly zero touchdowns to date in his Alabama career. Saban threw him into the fire against South Florida two years ago when Milroe struggled, and Simpson responded by leading Alabama to 17 unanswered points, throwing for 73 yards and rushing for a touchdown. (Again: against South Alabama, but still.) 'Going through a quarterback competition, that's pressure alone,' DeBoer said. 'These guys are going through pressure every throw. Whether it was a competition or not, we would analyze it, break it down, chart it. Every throw and drive that these guys are a part of, it's critical to them winning the job. I think sometimes going through a competition prepares you for the pressures that are going to come within a season.' Simpson will also live under the pressures of recent history. The Tide's last five starting quarterbacks — Milroe, Young, Mac Jones, Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts — have won national championships, Heismans, NFL jobs and Super Bowls. A mere CFP berth just isn't going to cut it against that legacy. Plus, unlike those other five quarterbacks, Simpson won't be tasked with just maintaining the previous season's standard; he'll need to elevate it. Alabama as a team is coming off its first single-digit-win season since Saban's first year, all the way back in 2007, missing the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff as a result. Whatever honeymoon DeBoer might have enjoyed is over; the pressure on Alabama and Simpson to win, and win right now, is paramount. The Tide begins the 2025 season against Florida State on Aug. 30, and Alabama fans will find out then if Simpson was worth the three-year wait.

Are the Oklahoma Sooners overrated in the preseason AP Poll?
The Oklahoma Sooners came in at No. 18 in the preseason AP Top 25 that was released on Monday. This, after OU was left out of the US LBM Coaches Poll last week for the first time since 1999. So who got it right? Well, that depends on what you think of the Oklahoma Sooners heading into 2025. If you are putting any stock into what happened in 2024, in particular on offense, as a reflection of what this team could be this year, then you may not think too highly of the Sooners, and the AP overrated OU. But if you look at Oklahoma's performance on offense last season and are willing to write it off as an aberration year due to the inordinate amount of injuries, you may think OU is a good team worthy of a top 20 ranking in 2025. This year's team is very different than the one that limped to 6-7 in 2024. First of all, they're a healthier team. Secondly, they boast more experience along the offensive line, led by one of the nation's top quarterbacks, John Mateer. It's not unreasonable to think the Sooners are one of the 25 best teams in college football. But Brad Crawford of CBS Sports believes the Sooners are overrated in the preseason AP Poll. Quality pieces aside, this team is overvalued at No. 18 in the preseason. No program nationally allowed more sacks (50) last season and the Sooners are using fall camp to figure out the right rotation to ensure their group up front is much-improved in 2025. - Crawford, CBS Sports Oklahoma has a pretty solid starting five with Jacob Sexton, Eddy Pierre-Louis, Troy Everett, Febechi Nwaiwu, and Derek Simmons. Much of the issue in the first part of the season is that the Sooners didn't have any consistency at center. Before Everett's return, the Sooners played four different players at center trying to find someone that could lead the offense. And that didn't account for the issues they had at tackle and guard throughout the season. When things finally settled into a consistent group, it was an improved product over the final month of the season, leading to an upset win over Alabama and nearly pulling off a road win vs. Missouri. Even with a consistent group, they were still really inexperienced with Logan Howland getting the starts at left tackle, and it showed, particularly in the Ole Miss game. A game they led at half-time. Offensive line may be the biggest question for an offense looking to bounce back from an uncharacteristically bad season by Oklahoma standards. However, offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh and offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle have a deeper group to work with this season. And perhaps as important as the guys blocking up front is the guy standing behind them in the shotgun. Mateer has proven capable of making plays when things break down in pass protection. He's really good off-script and outside the pocket. Where last year, it looked like Jackson Arnold struggled when things broke down around him, Mateer appears capable of still making things happen for the offense, even if things aren't perfect around him. The offensive line certainly has to be improved this season. It's likely it will be vastly improved compared to what we saw last year. But the bar isn't that high. With the defense the Sooners will deploy, one of the best backfield tandems in Mateer and Ott, it's not completely up to the offensive line to figure things out. The Sooners have a more complete team this year than they have at any point during Brent Venables' tenure. And while many may believe sitting at No. 18 in the preseason AP Poll might be overrated, with everything the Sooners have done this offseason, that's a pretty reasonable place to start. Oklahoma will have plenty of opportunities to prove they belong, starting week two when they welcome the No. 14 Michigan Wolverines to town. Alabama football reportedly names Ty Simpson 2025 starting quarterback
Alabama football has its next starting quarterback. The Crimson Tide on Monday, Aug. 11, reportedly named Ty Simpson their starting quarterback for their season opener against Florida State, according the Tuscaloosa News' Colin Gay, part of the USA TODAY Network, who was first to report the news. The team was informed of the decision. Simpson, a redshirt junior, has waited his turn as a backup for Alabama, and the former five-star recruit will finally get his shot to lead the offense. He beat out freshman five-star recruit Keelon Russell and redshirt sophomore Austin Mack, who followed coach Kalen DeBoer from Washington via transfer portal. REQUIRED READING: Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer faces big questions, expectations in post-Nick Saban era 'It's not how I drew it up for sure,' Simpson told The Tuscaloosa News in January. 'I think anybody could tell you that. But it's God's plan and I think, ultimately, it will make me a better player." Simpson has completed 29 of 50 passes for 381 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions across three seasons in a reserve role. He has rushed for 130 yards with three touchdowns over the past two seasons, however. Simpson will also operate under a new offensive coordinator in Ryan Grubb this season, as Grubb joined the Crimson Tide in the offseason after serving as the Seattle Seahawks play caller. Grubb was DeBoer's offensive coordinator in 2023 when Washington, one of the best offenses in college football that season, made the national championship game. The Martin, Tennessee, native was the No. 26 overall recruit in the 2022 recruiting class, according to 247Sports' Composite rankings. He was also the No. 3 quarterback nationally and No. 2 player in Tennessee.
