Netanyahu says Israel considering ‘alternative' means to achieve Gaza goals
JERUSALEM - Israel and its US allies are now considering 'alternative' options to bring their hostages home from Gaza and end the rule of Hamas in the territory, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on July 25 , apparently calling an end to ceasefire talks.
The remarks echoed statements made overnight by US envoy Steve Witkoff after Israel and the United States pulled their delegations out of the talks in Doha, mediated by Egypt and Qatar.
Mr Witkoff said Hamas was to blame for an impasse. Mr Netanyahu said Mr Witkoff had got it right, and that Hamas was the obstacle to a deal.
Hamas, which had given its response to a US-backed ceasefire proposal on July 24 , has disputed Mr Witkoff's characterisation of the talks and said the negotiators were making progress.
The proposed ceasefire would have lasted 60 days during which additional aid would be allowed into Gaza, and some of the remaining 50 hostages held by militants there would be freed in return for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. REUTERS

Since assuming the papacy in May, Leo has repeatedly appealed for peace in global conflicts and this month told visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that the Vatican was willing to host Russia-Ukraine peace talks. Russian officials, however, have said they do not view the Vatican as a serious venue for talks because it is surrounded by NATO member Italy which has supported Ukraine. The head of Russia's Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, has been an enthusiastic backer of the invasion of Ukraine. Video footage on Spanish television channel RTVE showed Civil Guard launches making repeated rescue attempts to bring some of the swimmers to safety, while others swam across to the enclave. The children, who were mostly Moroccan, were taken to temporary centres in Ceuta, where authorities called for help from the central government in dealing with the latest arrivals. 'Don't leave us alone. This is a matter of state. This has to be resolved,' Mr Juan Rivas, of the Ceuta regional government, told reporters on July 26. On Aug 26, 2024, hundreds of migrants took advantage of a thick mist to swim to Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco, local police said. In 2021, one boy was seen floating on empty plastic bottles in his attempt to reach Ceuta. Spain's two enclaves on Morocco's Mediterranean coast, Ceuta and Melilla, share the European Union's only land borders with Africa. The enclaves sporadically experience waves of attempted crossings by migrants trying to reach Europe. GAZA CITY - Hamas officials expressed surprise on July 26 at US President Donald Trump's accusation that the group 'didn't really want' a ceasefire and hostage release deal for Gaza. Mr Trump made the allegation on July 25, a day after Israel and the US quit indirect negotiations with Hamas in Qatar that had lasted nearly three weeks. 'Trump's remarks are particularly surprising, especially as they come at a time when progress had been made on some of the negotiation files,' Hamas official Taher al-Nunu told AFP. 'So far, we have not been informed of any issues regarding the files under discussion in the indirect ceasefire negotiations', he added Mr Nunu, who is close to Hamas's most senior political officials, said he was 'surprised' that Israel and the US had left the talks. Announcing the recall of US mediators on July 24, Mr Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff accused Hamas of not 'acting in good faith'. Though not part of the Hamas negotiating team, Hamas politburo member Izzat al-Rishq insisted the group had shown 'flexibility' in the talks. 'The American statements deliberately ignore the real obstructionist to all agreements, Netanyahu's government, which continues to put obstacles, deceive and evade commitments,' he said.
