American artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel, whose movies include artist biopics At Eternity's Gate and Basquiat, will be given a career award at this year's Venice Film Festival, organisers said.
The 73-year-old will be presented with the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award, dedicated to people who have made a particularly original contribution to contemporary cinema, on September 3, a festival statement said.
Before the ceremony, the festival will host the out-of-competition premiere of Schnabel's latest feature, In the Hand of Dante, starring Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler, Al Pacino, John Malkovich and Martin Scorsese.
"I never dreamed I would become a filmmaker, let alone be honoured with this award," Schnabel said in the statement.
Festival director Alberto Barbera praised Schnabel's work as "a gift to film", calling his new feature "his most ambitious project to date".
The Venice Film Festival runs from August 27 to September 6. This year's edition is set to feature Hollywood stars, Oscar-winning directors, Asian heavyweights and European auteurs, all looking to make a splash at the start of the awards season.

Ranveer Singh's mehendi surprise at his wedding to Deepika Padukone will melt your heart

Even nearly seven years after their dreamy Italian wedding, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone continue to capture hearts. This time through a revelation made by celebrity mehendi artist Veena Nagda. In a new podcast interview with Filmibeat Prime, Nagda fondly recalled being invited to do Deepika's bridal mehendi at the couple's 2018 wedding in Lake Como. She talked about Ranveer's involvement that stood out for her the most. 'No words can do him justice,' Veena said. 'It was very cold in Lake Como, and I was wondering how Deepika and I were going to get through the intricate design we had planned for her. Ranveer came around after an hour, and the entire climate changed. The sun came out. He really lit up the room.' The artist recalled that Ranveer even interrupted the session with a memorable compliment: 'A queen is doing the mehendi for another queen.' And the most heartwarming thing, Veena shared, was Ranveer's own mehendi — a minimalist design featuring "Deep" (a sweet abbreviation of Deepika's name), accompanied by three stars. According to Veena, each star represented a woman important to Deepika: one for Deepika herself, one for her mother Ujjala, and one for her sister Anisha. She also revealed that Deepika had made good on a promise she had made years ago. After watching Veena work her magic on the set of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Deepika promised to bring her on for her future wedding. Ranveer and Deepika got married on November 14, 2018, in an intimate but grand affair attended by close friends and family. The couple only made their wedding video public in 2023, during the premiere of Koffee With Karan Season 8 on Disney+ in the UAE. The power couple are now proud parents to a baby girl, Dua Padukone Singh, born on September 8, 2024. While they've shared the news with fans via a sweet Instagram post, they've chosen to keep their daughter out of the public eye for now.

BTS Not Moonwalking Into Michael Jackson Tribute Album, Says BigHit

Rumors of a BTS x Michael Jackson collaboration had ARMYs in a frenzy — but it turns out the buzz was just a beat away from the truth. BigHit Music has officially denied speculation that BTS would be featured on a Michael Jackson tribute album, putting a full stop to viral claims circulating online. The reports about BTS recording at Grouse Lodge Studio in Ireland and participating in the Michael Jackson tribute album are not true, the agency clarified in a statement. They also emphasized that BTS has never recorded at the studio in question and that they're taking action to curb the spread of misinformation. 'We remain fully committed to supporting our artists,' BigHit added. The rumor mill had been spinning after fans spotted the phrase "Michael Jackson x BTS" trending online, sending social media into speculation overdrive. But now, the label's straightforward response has hit pause on the hype. BTS found their way onto the Billboard 200 recently, ranking No. 10 with their first live album Permission to Dance on Stage – LIVE. Not too shabby for a group on hiatus!

How to apply for Dubai's first stop-motion animation programme

Dubai Culture and Arts Authority is accepting applications for Harakat Sikka, a practical stop-motion animation training course as part of the Sikka platform. The programme aims to develop visual storytelling skills among young creatives and support the growth of the animation sector in Dubai. What is stop-motion animation? A filmmaking technique in which physical objects are moved slowly between individually photographed frames, stop-motion animation creates the illusion of movement when played back. It often involves puppets and clay figures and is known for its handcrafted appearance. Some of the most famous films that use the technique are Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit by the UK's Aardman Animations, as well as Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas, directed by Henry Selick. Who can apply? Harakat Sikka is open to UAE nationals and residents aged 18 and above. It is intended for students, artists, filmmakers, writers and designers who are interested in learning the basics of stop-motion animation. Applicants do not need any previous experience to apply. What is the programme like? The course will run from August 18 to September 26 at House 436 in Al Shindagha. It will be limited to 10 participants to maintain what organisers describe as 'a focused, small-group environment". Sessions will take place three times a week, offering structured and practical instruction in all aspects of animation. Workshops will be led by Boubaker Boukhari, a director and artist recognised for his experimental, folklore-inspired work in stop-motion. Participants will be introduced to each stage of the animation process – beginning with concept development and storyboarding, followed by character design, visual and audio production, and then editing. The programme will also include guidance on how to prepare completed projects for festival submission and distribution. The course concludes with a public screening of the participants' short films at the Sikka Art and Design Festival. How can people apply? To apply, candidates need to submit a short-written response outlining their interest in animation and their reasons for applying. Applicants may also include a CV or creative portfolio to support their submission if they wish to do so. The deadline for applications is August 8, and submissions must be made through the official Dubai Culture website. What is Sikka? The Sikka platform is a Dubai Culture initiative that supports emerging talent across the visual arts, design, film and literature. It builds on the momentum of the annual Sikka Art and Design Festival and extends its spirit year-round through residencies, workshops and collaborative projects. The platform provides space, mentorship and professional development for young artists, with a particular focus on engaging local voices and encouraging experimentation. Harakat Sikka is one of several training programmes launched under the platform to provide access to practical tools and artistic guidance in a supportive, community-centred setting. The latest festival ran from January 31 to February 9. The festival was spread across 19 houses in the Al Shindagha neighbourhood, its courtyards and along Dubai Creek. It featured installations, sculptures and interactive spaces. More than 450 workshops, talks and panel discussions were also held across the eight days, as well as 100 live performances, 13 theatrical shows and six orchestral performances.
