Newcastle braced for Liverpool offer for Alexander Isak as Bayern Munich's Luis Diaz breakthrough paves way for fresh approach - with Eddie Howe making telling admission on star striker's future
The 25-year-old is on Tyneside after ruling himself out of the club's pre-season tour with a thigh injury. Subsequent scans were thought to be clear but he will remain at home.
Isak wants to join Liverpool and, with the Premier League champions set to bank £65million from the sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich, an official approach is now expected.
That will leave Newcastle's owners with a decision to make, as Howe admitted this weekend. They must choose between negotiating and extracting maximum value for the player, or refuse all offers and tell Isak he is staying. Even within the camp here in Singapore, opinion is split as to which approach is best for the club.
The message from above remains that they want to keep their best players, but Isak making it clear he wants to go could force the owners into making a business decision, especially if Liverpool's offer approaches £150million.
After confirming to Mail Sport that Isak will not be joining the team in South Korea during the next seven days, Howe addressed the issue of his players being distracted by the situation.
'It's business as usual for the players,' said the Newcastle boss. 'Naturally we're going to miss a player of Alex's quality and the group are going to feel that.
'There's no denying that. I can't sit here and claim that they won't. But they're a very a professional group of players and they're doing brilliantly as far as I can see in terms of managing the situation.'
Newcastle remain in talks for Brentford's Yoane Wissa, while RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson are also on the shortlist.
Howe, speaking after Sunday's 3-2 defeat by Arsenal, added: 'We're not deluded.
'We know we need to bring players in. We've known that for a long time. We did a lot of work (at the end of last season), we knew what we wanted. But it's been a challenging transfer window. Let's see what we can do.'

'I suffered Marcus Rashford humiliation and tore my shirt off in disgust – I was so angry'
Marcus Rashford was taken off just half an hour after being substituted on during his Barcelona debut, which one former Premier League player once reacted furiously to in similar circumstances Marcus Rashford suffered one of the biggest humiliations a top-level footballer can endure on Sunday. The Manchester United forward completed what he hoped to be a dream loan move to Barcelona last week as he looks to get his career back on track. The deal, which was finalised in time for Rashford to fly to Japan with the rest of the Barca squad, gives the La Liga champions an option to buy the forward for £26million at the end of the season. Rashford's first pre-season outing came against Japanese side Vissel Kobe, where he started the game on the bench. Flick brought the 27-year-old on for his much-anticipated debut at half-time, with Rashford showing glimpses of promise and working hard to track back in his new Blaugrana colours. However, he was quickly cut down to size as manager Hansi Flick took him off after just 33 minutes, moments after playing a key role in Barcelona's second goal. Rashford and left-back Jofre Torrents made way for Gerard Martin and Pedro Fernandez, who scored Barca's third goal. While the substitution would have stung Rashford, Flick explained that his decision was not performance related, saying: "Rashford hasn't played that much, and we also wanted to give Gerard Martin 15 minutes because he was playing after his injury." Just seven days ago, Rashford had been part of United's 'bomb squad' – the group training alone and made to use the club's Carrington training ground only once the first-team squad had gone home for the day. One player who knows exactly how Rashford would have felt this weekend is former Tottenham midfielder Hossam Ghaly. He was signed by Spurs in 2006 and was used sporadically by then-head coach Martin Jol during the 2006/07 season. After being in and out of the squad, the Egyptian was brought on against Blackburn Rovers in the first half of the penultimate game of the Premier League season after an injury to Steed Malbranque. But, like Rashford, he found himself substituted 31 minutes after his introduction – only his substitution WAS due to a poor performance. Unlike Rashford, Ghaly responded in the worst possible way, furiously throwing his shirt on the ground while walking off the pitch. The act infuriated the Spurs faithful as jeers and chants of 'You're not fit to wear the shirt' rang around the stadium. Ghaly was disciplined by the club and left out of the matchday squad on the final day of the season, before making a public apology. He said: "I am just so angry with myself. I have always considered it an honour to wear the Tottenham shirt and I never intended to show any disrespect. "I knew things weren't happening for me out there, my play was terrible and I could hear the crowd jeering me. "I was so upset at the fans' reaction. I have enjoyed playing in front of the club's supporters all season and I felt I had given my best all the time and played some decent football. "It is always hard to accept being substituted after such a short period of time and I was upset and taken aback by the cheering. I am a player who plays with my heart. "I know my reaction was totally wrong," he added. "I have apologised to the manager and I also want to apologise to the fans. I hope they don't judge me on this incident alone. I have tried hard for the club this season." Despite his best efforts at reconciliation, it marked Ghaly's last game for Spurs as he was sent out on loan to Derby County in January 2008. He returned to north London for the 2008/09 season but didn't play a single game before his permanent departure. Harry Redknapp considered bringing him on during a January 2009 clash with Wigan, but the Englishman decided against it after hearing the fans boo Ghaly while he was warming up and preparing to come on off the bench. Rashford will want to avoid such a fate at Barcelona, though he will also hope that Flick does not make a habit of subjecting him to external ridicule. Liverpool already have Luis Diaz replacement which explains Alexander Isak transfer plan
Liverpool have agreed a £65.5million deal with Bayern Munich to sell Luis Diaz and the winger's departure is expected to fund a bid for Newcastle star Alexander Isak When Luis Diaz arrived at Liverpool in January 2022, his smile lit up the training ground. Then-boss Jurgen Klopp admitted he hadn't seen anyone enjoy training as much as the Colombian did. Having moved sooner than expected to land him from Porto because Tottenham were sniffing, the Reds got a new weapon in a campaign they were fighting for four trophies in. Diaz was a big part in their League and FA Cup successes while they missed out on the Premier League by a point to Manchester City and suffered Champions League heartache against Real Madrid in Paris. But it was how quickly he settled which surprised most. Then captain Jordan Henderson even remarked how soon he found his, quite fast, feet at the club. With 41 goals and 16 assists in 148 games as well as a Premier League title and another League Cup to the previously mentioned trophies, Diaz has undoubtedly been a successful buy for £37.5million. Now he is heading for the exit door, he will need to be replaced. But has he already? Diaz under Arne Slot has been more versatile than the left winger under Klopp. When Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez were unavailable last season, he would be used through the middle. Slot wants a front line that can move about. He often frustrated with end product sometimes a problem but he could be lethal as he showed with a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in November and a brace against Manchester United at Old Trafford in September. Now Liverpool have already agreed a £79m deal to bring in Hugo Ekitike and he is finding his feet on the summer tour out in Asia, which Diaz has just departed. It should be noted that Liverpool believe the France under-21 striker has the ability to play in more places than one in the front three. Ekitike is not Nunez's replacement for when he expectedly departs later this summer. Ekitike is the versatile forward to replace Diaz it seems. That is why Liverpool remain on red alert when it comes to Alexander Isak. Because the Sweden hitman is the man they want as their new No.9 when Nunez leaves. Now should Newcastle fail to budge on their stance that he's not for sale, Liverpool are happy with Ekitike through the middle. Of course, they also have Cody Gakpo on the left and teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha, even at just 16, is starting to push. Yet if they could land Isak in the coming weeks, even if it will take a British transfer record offer and the Magpies relenting, Slot will believe he will have a much more fluid forward line as well as a lethal one. They know Ekitike is a forward of promise while Isak is a striker who has proven himself in the Premier League. Yet interchanging them while having options on the left and right (many believe Jeremie Frimpong is more back-up to Mo Salah than a threat to Conor Bradley at right-back), the Reds are building a new-look front line that is more flexible than the previous one. Why are Liverpool sanctioning Diaz's sale is another question when he too can be flexible in his positioning? Well, it became clear to them 12 months ago that Colombian, although still smiling brightly, was having his head turned. They tried on two occasions to secure him under a new contract but the differences in salary demands and expectations were too much. Liverpool wanted to stand strong this season. Earlier in the summer, their stance was Diaz was not for sale but Bayern Munich have proven that everyone is for sale for the right price with their £65.1m bid being accepted.
