Manipur marks two years of ethnic violence by remembering victims

The Hindu03-05-2025
Shutdowns marked the second anniversary of the ethnic conflict in Manipur as the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities remembered the victims of the violence in their respective areas of dominance on Saturday.
Educational institutions and businesses in the Meitei-majority Imphal Valley shut down in response to a call by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a conglomerate of social organisations, to attend a public convention at Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal.
People in the hills dominated by the Kuki-Zo group of tribes also observed a shutdown called by the Zomi Students Federation and the Kuki Students Organisation.
At the COCOMI event, people offered floral tributes in memory of the victims. The speakers, including scholars, eminent personalities, and leaders of civil society organisations, called for peace, justice, resolution of the conflict, and the protection of Manipur's territorial integrity.
The tenor of the Imphal convention contrasted with 'Separation Day', the theme of the anniversary event organised by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum, which has been batting for the rights of the Kuki-Zo people. The highlight of the forum's programme was the convergence of hundreds of people at the 'Wall of Remembrance' in Churachandpur to pay their homage to the Kuki-Zo victims of the conflict.

The emphasis of the 'Separation Day' was on the Kuki-Zo demand for a separate administration that has been gaining momentum since the ethnic conflict broke out two years ago.
Security was heightened in different parts of the State, specifically in the Kuki-Zo and Meitei areas. However, no untoward incident was reported.
The ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023, after tribals in the hill districts took out a solidarity rally to protest the State government's alleged move to grant Scheduled Tribe status to the Meiteis concentrated in the Imphal Valley, which along with the Jiribam area, comprise about 10% of Manipur's geographical area.
The violence left more than 250 people dead and some 60,000 others displaced. Most of the displaced people continue to live in relief camps.
Such has been the impact of the conflict that the Meiteis and Kuki-Zos are ethnically partitioned, unable to venture into each other's areas. The Centre tried to bridge the divide by opening up the highways — Manipur's lifelines connecting the Imphal Valley to the country beyond through the Kuki-Zo inhabited hills — on March 8.
The attempt, a month after Nongthombam Biren Singh stepped down as Manipur's Chief Minister on February 9, backfired and claimed a life in the process.
Manipur has been under President's Rule, imposed on February 13 after the Bharatiya Janata Party failed to reach a consensus on Mr. Singh's successor. A few days ago, 21 MLAs of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the State wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding the immediate installation of a 'popular government' in the State.
The Opposition Congress, meanwhile, demanded fresh elections as the 'double-engine government' and the President's Rule failed to bring back peace and normalcy in Manipur apart from ensuring free movement and the return of the displaced people to their homes.

Rahul Gandhi's ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra' will be historic: Congress leader

Ahead of the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's proposed 16-day 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' beginning August 17 from Sasaram in Bihar, former Bihar Congress president and party Rajya Sabha member Akhilesh Prasad Singh on Saturday (August 16, 2025) said the yatra would be a historic one. He said that it would boost the morale of the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) leaders for the upcoming State Assembly elections. The State Assembly polls are likely to be held in Bihar in October or November later this year. Rally on September 1 During the yatra, Mr. Gandhi is expected to be crisscrossing about 25 districts of Bihar, out of a total of 38, with three breaks on August 20, 25 and 31 before culminating the journey at Patna with a rally on September 1. Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav and other Opposition leaders would be present with the Congress leader during the inauguration of the yatra in Sasaram. The proposed Statewide tour is also being taken out to raise awareness among people about their right to vote, Mr. Singh added while addressing media persons in Patna. 'It will be a historic yatra in which unimaginable [number of] people would participate and come out on the streets. The yatra will cover about 1,300 km,' Mr. Singh further said. When asked whether Congress leader and party MP Priyanka Gandhi would participate in the yatra as well, the Rajya Sabha MP said he was not aware about her joining it. 'When I'll come to know about this if she joins the yatra, you all will be informed,' he said. 'Anomalies being exposed' While making remarks on the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across the poll-bound State, the Congress leader further added, 'The anomalies in the exercise are being exposed every day by different news media'. 'Before this exercise was to begin in Bihar, leaders of about 20-22 political parties had gone to meet the Election Commissioner of India but even at that time he had told us that about 20% of the voters' names would be deleted from the [voters] list,' Mr. Singh said while claiming that 'except two parties BJP and JD(U), almost all political parties had opposed SIR of electoral rolls exercise, which means they were supporting it from the backdoor'. 'Our party leader Rahul Gandhi ji will kick start the Voters Rights Yatra from Sasaram tomorrow and he will be in Bihar for almost a fortnight. I appeal to people to come and support the yatra, which would eventually be a yatra to protect your right to vote,' the Congress leader said. 'Yatra will be a milestone' In Delhi, the party's media and publicity wing chief, Pawan Khera said, 'Whenever Rahul Gandhi ji has set out for a yatra, the democracy of this country has turned a page. 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' will be a historic march, and it will prove to be a milestone in the history of our democracy. We'll not accept that the Election Commission becomes a compartment of this so-called 'double-engine',' Mr. Khera said. 'We're fighting against this and will continue to do so in the future as well,' he added. The ruling NDA alliance leaders have been saying that there was a 'double engine (both BJP and JD-U) government in Bihar and at the Centre, which has accelerated growth of the State and the country as well'. Earlier, Mr. Gandhi had said that the yatra had been planned to 'fight for the right of one person, one vote'. 'We're waging a direct fight against 'vote chori' from Bihar with 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' and we'll ensure a clean voters list across the country,' said Mr. Gandhi. 'Vote chori is not just an election issue but a decisive battle to protect democracy, the Constitution and the principle of 'one man, one vote',' the Congress party leaders said while asserting, 'vote chori' has been a do-or-die issue' for them. Meanwhile, ruling BJP leaders termed Rahul Gandhi's Statewide tour as a complete nautanki (drama) by Opposition party leaders that 'will have no impact at all among the people of the State'.

'Fight to protect one person, one vote': Rahul Gandhi to embark on 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' from Bihar's Sasaram

"This conspiracy was not just to snatch votes. It was a conspiracy to snatch your and our identity. Today, the right to vote is being snatched from the Dalits, the deprived, the oppressed, the exploited, the minorities; tomorrow their participation will be snatched," Khera alleged. He claimed that a conspiracy was being hatched to attack the poor, against which the people of the country have raised their voice. The 'yatra' will pass through Aurangabad, Gaya, Nawada, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Munger, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Purnea, Araria, Supaul, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, East Champaran, West Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Chapra and Ara. At a press briefing in Patna, Congress MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh said that when the Election Commission announced the SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar, the leaders of the INDIA bloc went to meet poll panel officials, who had stated that 20 per cent of the voters in Bihar would lose their franchise. "We demanded a discussion on this issue in the House, but the BJP government did not consider it necessary. When the new draft list came out after SIR in Bihar, many irregularities were revealed. When we are asking for answers on this, the BLO (block-level officer) has no answer," he claimed. "In such a situation, we have decided that the Congress will start a 'Voter Awareness Campaign'. In this, we will go to all districts of Bihar and make people aware, so that they are not deprived of their rights," Singh said. He also said that Rahul Gandhi is fighting to save the Constitution. "Rahul Gandhi is the voice of the poor, deprived, women, farmers, and labourers of the country. We request the people of Bihar to take part in this journey and help us in foiling the plans of the Election Commission-BJP," Singh added. Gandhi on Thursday said, "We are waging a direct fight against 'vote chori' from Bihar with the 'Voter Adhikar Yatra." He asserted that his party will ensure a clean voters' list across the country. "'Vote chori' is not just an election issue but a decisive battle to protect democracy, the Constitution and the principle of 'one man, one vote'," he had said. The Congress on Tuesday claimed that "vote chori" was a "do-or-die" issue for it, and announced a roadmap to take its allegations to the people through various activities.
