Hip hop collides with Silicon Valley in new SF musical "Co-Founders"
A new hip hop musical tells a uniquely Bay Area story: A young Oakland coder hacks her way into San Francisco's most competitive startup accelerator, intent on saving her home from gentrification.
Driving the news: " Co-Founders" draws from the region's hip hop roots while incorporating traditions from soul, gospel, funk, jazz, R&B and more to pay homage to the people who make Silicon Valley what it is.
Zoom in: The musical explores the tension underlying a Black woman trying to enter circles she's long been excluded from while investigating the perils of tech when it comes to grief.
The brainchild of Ryan Nicole Austin, Beau Lewis and Adesha Adefela, "Co-Founders" is now playing at American Conservatory Theater's Strand Theater (1127 Market St.) through July 6.
What they're saying: The fingerprint of historical figures like the Black Panthers is reflected in the music and parallels the grit needed to pave your way in the tech world, according to Austin.
"That's where the synergy is with the spirit of the entrepreneur," she told the San Francisco Chronicle. "It's like, 'Hey, I gotta make something out of nothing, and even though everything around me says no, I know that I have it within me to say yes.'"

Three-judge federal panel upholds Arkansas congressional redistricting
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A three-judge panel for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas upheld Arkansas congressional redistricting on Friday. The ruling on a summary judgment ends the lawsuit filed in May 2023 by the Christian Ministerial Alliance against then-Secretary of State John Thurston. The suit alleged racial discrimination in redrawing the second district. Three-judge panel yet to make decision in Arkansas redistricting lawsuit A significant part of the complaint was that, in the 2021 redistricting, Pulaski County was divided into three districts, rather than being in one district as it had been previously. The plaintiffs argued that by fragmenting a Black community, the redistricting was racial discrimination. The court's Friday order states, 'the evidence does not back up their claims of racial discrimination' and grants summary judgment to Thurston. Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin praised the court's decision. 'The District Court's ruling is consistent with the ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, in which the high court wrote that a party must first disentangle race and politics if it wishes to prove racial motivation rather than partisanship,' Griffin said, adding, 'It is critical that our electorate maintain faith in our election process, and this ruling confirms that our congressional districts are legal and proper.' Ex-D.C. Lieutenant Gets 18-Month Sentence for Tipping Off Proud Boys Leader
A former Washington, D.C. police department lieutenant was sentenced to 18 months in prison for tipping off a Proud Boys leader about an investigation and then lying about it. Shane Lamond was found guilty in federal court last December of alerting Henry 'Enrique' Tarrio to a warrant for his arrest over the December 2020 burning of a Black Lives Matter flag stolen from a Black church. When federal investigators later asked Lamond about his communications with Tarrio, he lied about it in three separate false statements. On Friday, Lamond said in court that he 'respectfully disagrees' with the guilty verdict, but also acknowledged he was 'sloppy' in his relationship with Tarrio, The Hill reported. Judge Amy Berman Jackson told Lamond that that was 'quite the understatement.' His actions, she said, weren't in line with proper department guidelines 'unless you twist them until they're unrecognizable.' 'That is absolutely not the way police treat information about a warrant,' Jackson said Friday, The Washington Post reported, 'and Mr. Lamond knows that… He lied to the federal agents when he was a sworn law enforcement officer himself.' Lamond, who had been with the Metropolitan Police Department for 24 years, is a first-time offender, and his sentence was considerably less than the 30 years he could have received for obstruction of justice. Lamond has until August 1 to surrender. Tarrio was convicted of seditious conspiracy and sentenced to 22 years for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot—a black mark that President Donald Trump removed via a pardon in January. Tarrio, who was in the courtroom Friday, said Trump should pardon the former officer as well. 'This has to be corrected,' he told reporters afterward. Also in attendance was Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes, whose 18-year seditious conspiracy sentence was commuted by Trump. Rhodes called Friday's sentencing a 'travesty of injustice.' Jackson said a potential pardon didn't influence her sentencing decision. 'I'm going to do my job to the best of my ability, which I think is determining the right sentence,' she said, according to The Post.
