‘Unimaginable': Mayor questions investigators after 3 Revere women found dead at Belize hotel
In a statement, Revere Mayor Patrick M. Keefe Jr. said he's 'deeply saddened' to learn of the deaths of Wafae El Arar, Imane Mallah, and Kaoutar Naqqad.
'Three young women who were valued members of the Revere community,' Keefe Jr. wrote in the statement. 'On behalf of the entire city of Revere, I extend my condolences to their families and loved ones during this time of unimaginable loss.'
The Royal Kahal Beach Resort in San Pedro told Boston 25 News that preliminary reports suggest all three died as a result of drug overdoses, however, Keefe Jr. expressed concern with the 'lack of transparency in this investigation.'
'The information we have received thus far from the Belizean authorities leaves our grieving community with too many questions. These are daughters, friends, and contributors to our city,' Keefe Jr. explained. 'I have heard widespread concern from the families and community members about the lack of transparency in this investigation, and the media narrative painted by Belizean authorities.'
Keefe Jr. said that he's since reached out to local politicians for help getting to the bottom of what led to the deaths of the young women.
'We will exhaust all avenues, both domestic and abroad, to ensure a proper and fair analysis of this case,' Keefe Jr. vowed. 'I have been in contact with members of our federal delegation, including Senator Ed Markey and Whip Katherine Clark, and we will be working lockstep to bring answers to these families and their communities.'
The Department of State issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Belize in December 2024 due to an increased risk for crime.
GoFundMe pages have been set up on behalf of each of the three families linked to the tragedy.

‘Beloved' 18-year-old shot dead at house party, NM officials say. Man sentenced
A man has been sentenced to prison in connection to the 2022 shooting that left a 'beloved' 18-year-old dead, New Mexico officials said. In December 2022, now-21-year-old Jesse Parra showed up uninvited to an Albuquerque house party with Cruz Medina, Isaiah Espinosa and Jesse Barrios after learning about it on social media, according to an Aug. 19 Facebook post by the Bernalillo County District Attorney's Office. After they were asked to leave because they were taking photos with guns, they returned and began shooting, officials said. Parra drove the car during the shooting, 'maneuvering the vehicle so the two shooters could fire at the home and flee the scene,' officials said. An 18-year-old, later identified as Jada Gonzales, was fatally shot in the stomach, officials said. Gonzales had plans to attend Texas Christian University and was an 'exemplary student' who worked two jobs, a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral expenses said. 'This is the greatest pain I've ever known and not one I'd wish any parent to ever feel,' the GoFundMe page said. Medina, then 16, was sentenced to 24 years in prison, officials said. Espinosa, 16 at the time and the one accused of firing the shot that killed Gonzales, was sentenced to 29 years in prison, prosecutors said. Barrios, then 18, 'recorded the crime on his phone and was taken into ICE custody,' prosecutors said. In April, Parra pleaded guilty to charges of shooting at a dwelling or occupied building resulting in death, conspiracy to commit shooting at a dwelling or occupied building resulting in death and tampering with evidence, officials said. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, officials said. 'Jada Brooke Gonzales touched many lives and hearts and we are all devastated by this loss,' the GoFundMe page said.

Husband killed trying to break up brawl on night out with wife, Texas family says
A Texas man was fatally stabbed while trying to break up a brawl during a night out with his wife, his family says. Officers responded to a call about a 'large disturbance between multiple individuals' in a parking lot on the city's northeast side at about 12:10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, the News Braunfels Police Department said in a news release. A 52-year-old old man with stab wounds was taken to a hospital where he later died, police said. Mario Saldana and his wife were leaving El Flaco Event Center after a party when the fight broke out, his wife, Rosanna Perez, told KENS, adding that her husband stepped in despite not knowing any of the people involved. 'I told my husband, we needed to leave, let's go,' she told the station. 'Immediately he's like, 'No, let me go tell these people to calm down, they need to stop.' He was trying to deescalate the situation.' A man, later identified as 55-year-old David Saldana, killed Mario Saldana, according to police. 'He tried to separate people, and I guess they got angry,' Perez told KSAT. 'Next thing, he stabbed him. This was something that didn't need to happen.' There's no relation between Mario Saldana and David Saldana, the outlet reported. 'He stabbed him first in the chest, several times,' Perez told KENS. 'We tried to get away, and I guess that wasn't enough for him. He came and tackled him to the ground and stabbed him in the back.' Mario Saldana didn't have life insurance and was the 'sole provider' for his family so Perez could stay home to take care of her mother full time, according to a GoFundMe. 'Mario always had an optimistic attitude toward life and lived life to the fullest. He loved to joke around and lift people's spirits. And I know that he loved all of us dearly,' it read. David Saldana was arrested on a charge of murder, and his bond is set at $500,000, jail records show.

Service dog reunited with blind owner two months after being stolen from Chicago backyard
A loyal service dog has been reunited with its owner nearly three months after being stolen from a backyard in Chicago, officials say. Bam Bam, the 14-year-old tan and white Dachshund, was stolen from the yard in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago on June 5, according to a GoFundMe created to help find him. His owner, Angel Santiago, who is legally blind due to glaucoma, spent days walking miles and handing out flyers with the hope of finding his beloved friend and aid. Santiago told police that two unknown people entered through his gate and took the canine. Although he heard the disturbance and even grabbed one of the suspects in an attempt to stop him, the men were able to get away with Bam Bam. He believes the suspect he grabbed sounded like a teenager. Santiago said that he could hear Bam Bam barking as the men ran away with him. 'Let your eyes be mine and look out for Bam Bam for me, please. I beg of you to help me,' he wrote in a desperate plea on the fundraiser. The GoFundMe totalled almost $20,000 as concerned citizens looked to support the cause. A Facebook Page set up for the search effort led several flyer events, petitions, and meetups in the city to help find the dog. On August 12, a post read: 'We are incredibly grateful to be working with an amazing group of volunteers who are organizing walking routes and flyering to reach local residents who may not have heard Angel and Bam Bam's story.| Thankfully, after nearly three months of desperate searching, Bam Bam was found. On Tuesday evening, Chicago police said an unidentified man and woman dropped off a white-and-yellow dachshund mix at the 16th District police station. Police quickly confirmed the animal to be Bam Bam. Santiago, who is both blind and has Type 2 diabetes, rushed to the station to be reunited with Bam Bam, say police. The dog was reportedly in good health when it was recovered, police said. As it stands, no arrests have been made. A team of detectives is continuing to investigate the circumstances of how the dog ended up at the station. The pair who dropped off Bam Bam refused to hand over any information to the police before leaving, according to authorities.
