Yamasee Tribe hosts annual Green Corn Unity Festival in Allendale
ALLENDALE, S.C. (WJBF) – The Yamasee Indian Tribe of Seminoles is hosting their annual Green Corn Unity Festival in Allendale on the Campus of USC Salkehatchie. Green Corn symbolizes renewal for the Yamasee Tribe. The event featured traditional Yamasee clothing and performances from tribe members.
Se'khuhadjo Gentle, Chief Yamasee Indian Tribe told WJBF, 'We have a period of seven days where we originally celebrate in private ceremonial things that we don't do in the public and then open it the public at the end during the weekend to share our culture our heritage and show camaraderie with the community.'
The Yamasee War of 1715 was a historical battle in which colonizers started enslaving Yamasee Indians based on their skin color. The Yamasee were renamed by colonizers as Seminoles or runaways due to their success in the war. Today, Gentle says it's important for the next generation of Yamasee to know where they came from.
'Well it's important for our children to know who they are and where they came from. We honor our ancestors and elders because they gave their lives for us to be here. So it's a form of disrespect not to continue on customs and traditions of our people so that our babies can know who they are.' said Chief Gentle.
The event was also a day of remembrance for Markayla Roberts, a 14 year old resident of Allendale who's life was taken by a stray bullet. A proclamation was issued marking today as Markayla Roberts Day. Chief Gentle said, 'This year Green Corn was dedicated to Markayla Roberts so that we can remember her and that the fight can continue on to find out what happened to her so that her family can get some type of solitude and feel a sense of justice as well.'
Carl Love, Allendale County Councilman told WJBF, 'Before this myself and other councilmen went to Columbia to fight for Markayla and now chief has come on board with me so the fight continues.' Love hopes that this year's Green Corn Festival will be a launch pad for unity in Allendale County. 'We've had a few shootings in Allendale county and they're cold cases so starting today we hope we can move forward.'
The Green Corn Festival concludes tomorrow at USC Salkehatchie in Allendale.

Parents charged in death of 7-year-old hit by car in North Carolina
GASTONIA, N.C. (WJBF) – The Gastonia Police Department has filed criminal charges against the parents of a 7-year-old boy who died after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road on last Tuesday evening. Parents, Jessica Ivey and Samuele Jenkins, have been charged with Felony Involuntary Manslaughter, Felony Child Neglect, and Misdemeanor Child Neglect. On Tuesday, May 27th, at approximately 5:55 p.m., officers responded to a reported traffic collision. Upon arrival, police found that a 7-year-old boy had been struck by a Jeep Cherokee being driven by a 76-year-woman. The preliminary investigation revealed that the child was attempting to cross the street outside of a crosswalk with another 10-year-old boy, when he entered the roadway and was hit. The child was initially transported the hospital here he later died. In a Facebook post the Gastonia P.D. said, 'While the Gastonia Police Department offers its deepest sympathies to the family for the heartbreaking loss of their child, the investigation revealed that the children involved were unsupervised at the time the boy stepped into traffic. In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children.' At this time, there is no evidence of speeding or wrongdoing on the part of the driver, therefore no charges have been filed. Richmond County Sheriff's Office meeting with downtown businesses owners
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – This effort is part of Sheriff Eugene Brantley's plan to build the relationship between the sheriff's office and downtown business owners. Part of the new Downtown Safety Plan is to have at least two deputies on each downtown block of Broad street from 9pm-3:30am. This plan has been fully implemented, and one business owner says he has already seen the impacts. 'I think it's pretty amazing to see how this is almost an overnight difference, in 6 months to have this difference of policing and the initiative that they're trying to do and how they're going about it is pretty amazing and you don't see this very often,' said Dylan Pope, Augusta Business Owner. There was a chance for business owners to be able to meet with and ask members of the sheriff's office any questions they had. Pope says it's imperative for not only the sheriff's office but also the Augusta commission to speak and listen to business owners and residents. 'I think that's what we've all been talking about, the lack of communication, the lack of transparency in the past and to see that the commission wants to have these meetings, to see that the sheriff wants to have these meetings, it goes to show that we're trying to make these steps in the right direction for a better downtown,' Pope said. Pope continued to say, 'We all want a better downtown, and we all want downtown to grow in a positive and safe way and Sheriff Brantley and his staff have definitely given that route and have already made big changes in the last 6 months.' Statistics show crime has decreased tremendously since Sheriff Brantley took office but he says there are always things they can improve. 'I think you could hear that what we've down thus far is better than what was previously being done. We still have some things we have to tweak and work on to continue to make downtown safer,' said Eugene Brantley, Richmond County Sheriff. RCSO: Man wanted for Rape, Aggravated Assault
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The Richmond County Sheriff's Office said its investigators are looking for man wanted in reference to a rape and aggravated assault. According to police, 46-year-old Leland Tyrone Candidate is wanted in connection to an incident that took place on Tuesday, May 27 at the 400 block of Greene Street. Candidate was reportedly last seen operating a 2006 gold Nissan Murano with the South Carolina tag 137BTU.
