‘It's What My Ph.D Is In:' Doctor Shares Scientific Trick to Instantly Cool Down Your Hot Car This Summer. Here's What to Do

Motor 128-06-2025
It's summer, and a heat wave is sweeping across the United States, which means your car is probably a rolling oven.
According to Hannah Fry (
@fryrsquared
), a fluid dynamics expert with a Ph.D. and a knack for social media, there's a surprisingly simple hack to cool your car down fast.
'That age-old dilemma of choosing between having a non-sweltering car or baffling a passerby because you look like a fool who doesn't know how to use a door,' Fry jokes in the caption of her Instagram Reel, which has racked up over 6.5 million views.
Cool Your Car Down Fast
Fry swears by it and says she uses it herself. Other content creators on TikTok have shown similar tricks using windows on opposite sides to create airflow.
'This is the trick I continue to use,' Fry, a Cambridge University math professor, says. 'It's what my Ph.D is in: fluid dynamics.'
Here's how it works: Open one of your car's rear windows. Then, on the opposite side, rapidly open and close the front door. For example, if you roll down the window behind the driver's seat, swing the passenger-side front door open and shut quickly multiple times.
The idea is to create airflow: the door movement forces the stale, stifling air out and pulls fresh and hopefully cooler air in.
'When you open and close the door, it sweeps out all the air already in the car,' Fry explains. That action creates a low-pressure zone that draws out the 'hot, sweaty, horrible' air—via what she calls 'bulk flow'—and replaces it with 'nice, fresh, easy air' from outside.
Is This Legit?
While
Motor1
hasn't tested it, the science backs Fry up. Opening a window creates a path for air to enter or exit. Pair that with an open-and-close motion on the opposite side, and you're enhancing airflow, creating a natural breeze that helps flush out hot air.
And it's not just for cars. The same technique can help cool down rooms in your house.
According to
Marvin Replacement
, different window types ventilate differently: double-hung windows push hot air out, casement windows catch side breezes, and slider windows let you adjust airflow. Bay and bow windows offer even more ventilation thanks to their wide flanking panes.
Viewers Confirm Car Cooling Trick Works
Commenters said Fry's trick could save them from a lifetime of sweltering in hot, stuffy cars.
'You've just improved my life more than you know Hannah,' one person wrote.
'This may be the best Reel I have ever seen,' another joked.
Some confirmed they've already been using the trick, just without the science.
'This is how I do it—change the air,' one said. 'I may not know the science, but I know the sense of it.'
Electric car owners chimed in, too.
'Cool trick. Or just do it from the app,' a
Tesla
owner wrote. 'Or set 'cabin overheat protection' mode so it never gets too hot in the first place.'
Others say it works in tiny rooms, too.
'I do this with my window and door in my tiny room,' one woman said. 'Additionally I also take a towel and move it in giant circles vertically to drag the cool air and flush out the hot air. I play music and dance a lil.'
Another added, 'Works with houses too! My husband stands at the back door to stop it slamming, while I stand at the front door wafting it open and closed! Really shifts all that stagnant, hot air!'
Sure, doing this in public might draw some stares, as Fry experienced. But fans say it's worth it.
'Lol people look at me like I'm crazy but I don't give a [expletive],' one commenter said.

Workhorse Group and Motiv Electric Trucks announce merger agreement

Workhorse Group and Motiv Electric Trucks are merging, and the combination will create one of the largest medium-duty electric truck OEMs in North America. Sharonville, Ohio-based Workhorse Group, formerly named AMP Electric Vehicles, makes commercial electric vehicles and telematics software for last-mile delivery. Motiv Electric Trucks is a large manufacturer of medium-duty electric trucks and buses. The all-stock transaction, announced last week, values the combined company at approximately $105 million and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to Workhorse shareholder approval. The merger joins Workhorse's manufacturing capabilities and national dealer network with Motiv's diverse product portfolio and fleet relationships to serve the growing $23 billion medium-duty truck segment with a full range of Class 4-6 electric vehicles. 'Bringing together two leading OEMs in the medium-duty space strengthens our ability to reduce the cost of electric trucks and make the total cost of ownership even more compelling,' said Scott Griffith, CEO of Motiv, who will lead the combined company. 'We believe this is a coming-of-age moment—not just for Motiv and Workhorse, but for the industry as a whole.' Under the terms of the agreement, Motiv's controlling investor will become the majority owner with approximately 62.5% of the combined company, while Workhorse shareholders will maintain a significant equity stake of approximately 26.5%. The companies anticipate achieving at least $20 million in cost synergies by the end of 2026 through R&D, G&A, and facility cost reductions. Workhorse's Union City facility has the capacity to eventually produce up to 5,000 trucks per year, a significant manufacturing scale for the merged operation. 'This transaction represents a significant milestone for Workhorse, our customers, our stakeholders and our shareholders,' said Rick Dauch, CEO of Workhorse, who will serve as an advisor to the combined company. 'We believe Motiv is the right partner to support the advancement of our combined product roadmap and capture new growth opportunities.' The transaction includes a $20 million sale-leaseback of Workhorse's Union City manufacturing facility and a $5 million convertible note financing, both completed with entities affiliated with Motiv's controlling investor to provide near-term liquidity through closing. Together, the companies have already served 10 of the largest medium-duty fleets in North America, as they seek to expand existing relationships with likely early adopters of commercial EVs. Why NASCAR's 2026 Cup Schedule Feels More Like Refinement Than Reinvention

The wait is over. NASCAR released the 2026 schedules for its top three touring series Wednesday and while 2025 was a year of surprises, 2026 looks more like a year of refinement—trading international flair and big experiments for a reshuffled deck of classics, a new San Diego street race on a Navy base, and the long-awaited return of North Wilkesboro as a full points-paying stop. The stops include tracks where there some winners, losers, and some odd choices of dates. Yes, North Wilkesboro gets a race that actually means something, its first points-paying race since 1996, but at the expense of Dover Motor Speedway a storied track in the annuals of the sport. NASCAR has raced at the 1-mile concrete oval in the First State since 1969 when Richard Petty became the first winner. The track held two races a season until 2021 when it lost a date to Nashville Superspeedway. Next season, Dover's lone date becomes the All-Star Race, which, outside of a hefty check, means very little in the bigger picture. But Dale Earnhardt Jr., who helped resurrect North Wilkesboro, isn't complaining. "You know I'm a big believer in the value of short track racing and its history in our sport, so to me this is the biggest news on the 2026 schedule," he said. Meanwhile Dover reached out to a politician for part of its response. 'Hosting the NASCAR All-Star Race at The Monster Mile is a win for Delaware's economy and tourism industry,' said Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer. 'In 2026, as we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, fans from across the globe will come here for the thrill of race weekend, discovering our beaches, history, and hospitality along the way.' Ending by dropping a line straight out of Talladega Nights: 'And take it from the First State: if you're not first, you're last!' And take it from the First State: if you're not first, you're last!' In another curious move, Watkins Glen International, the famous road course long a summer staple, shifts to Mother's Day. Traditionally that date was reserved for tracks on life support, a last chance before the axe. And in upstate New York, May doesn't guarantee sunshine. Snow isn't unheard of, meaning fans might be swapping T-shirts for mittens. Other shuffles include Atlanta, er, 'EchoPark' Speedway, swapping dates with Sonoma. The spring Darlington race moves earlier, replacing Homestead's spring slot—Homestead in turn closes the season a move we already knew. Speaking of returns, NASCAR heads back to Chicagoland Speedway in 2026. The Joliet oval lost its date when the pandemic scrapped the 2020 season, and when the 2021 schedules were revealed, it was quietly left behind after hosting Cup races since 2001. It was already well known that NASCAR's trip outside the States to Mexico wasn't going to be happening, and that date is replaced by Pocono. The former Pocono date will belong to San Diego the race held on the streets of a Navy base that made news when it was announced a few weeks ago. Speaking of street races, NASCAR will return to Chicago, not to race on that city's streets but in 2026 but at Chicagoland Speedway. The 1.5-mile oval in Joliet was left behind when the pandemic cancelled races everywhere in 2020, and when the 2021 schedules were revealed, the speedway was left behind after hosting NASCAR since 2001. The overall structure of the Playoffs remains featuring the same familiar mix and will end at Homestead-Miami for the first time since 2019. At the end of it all, there is no real 'wow' in the 2026 schedule. It's a little Southern California sun, a little more nostalgia, and no need for a passport. As always, some fans will hate it, some will love it, still others won't care. But come 2026 at Bowman-Gray Stadium the preseason Clash will kick off the season and at the end of it all a champion will be crowned. For those haters bemoaning the schedule for next year. As NASCAR has displayed in the last few years the schedules are no longer sealed in concrete, but more a Spotify playlist—one year it's classic rock, the next it's EDM, and we are all just along for the ride.
