Popular Christian music star responds to sexual abuse and drug use allegations
The ex-singer of a famous Christian rock band founded in Australia in the mid 1980s has shocked fans with his 'confession' after being accused of sexually assaulting men and cocaine and alcohol abuse.
Michael Tait, who suddenly left Nashville-based rockers Newsboys in January, was the subject of an investigation by Christian media outlet The Roys Report, which alleged the singer groomed and sexually assaulted three men between 2004 and 2014.
The Christian music superstar, who first rose to fame with Grammy-winning band DC Talk, responded with a social media statement saying the allegations he had groped young men after plying them with alcohol were 'largely true'.
'For some two decades I used and abused cocaine, consumed far too much alcohol, and, at times, touched men in an unwanted sensual way,' he wrote in a lengthy statement titled 'My Confession'.
'I am ashamed of my life choices and actions, and make no excuses for them. I will simply call it what God calls it — sin.
'I don't blame anyone or anything but myself. While I might dispute certain details in the accusations against me, I do not dispute the substance of them.'
The 59-year-old singer joined Newsboys in 2009, replacing the original singer Peter Furler who formed the band on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland in 1985 before relocating to Nashville when they signed with an American label.
Tait abruptly quit the group in January this year, revealing he underwent a six-week rehabilitation treatment in Utah.
There was wild speculation among fans as to his sudden departure from the popular group which tried to continue with their tour commitments with a new singer.
The Roys Report investigation, published on June 4 after interviews with more than 50 sources, detailed allegation from three men who the singer met on tour.
Two men accused Tait of fondling their genitals after drinking with him while another told the outlet he had not consented to inappropriate sexual touching after a skinny dipping session.
'I was not healthy, physically or spiritually, and was tired of leading a double life,' Tait wrote.
'I have been clean and sober since, though I still have lots of hard work ahead of me.'
Tait said he was 'truly sorry' for those he had hurt with his 'reckless and destructive behaviour' and sought forgiveness for his actions.
'I have hurt so many people in so many ways, and I will live with that shameful reality the rest of my life. I can only dream and pray for human forgiveness, because I certainly don't deserve it,' he wrote.
'I have even accepted the thought that God may be the only One who ultimately and completely forgives me,' Tait wrote. 'Still, I want to say I'm sorry to everyone I have hurt. I am truly sorry.'

Alleged Alameddine gangster Ali Elmoubayed targeted in Merrylands shooting
Don't miss out on the headlines from Police & Courts. Followed categories will be added to My News. Remarkable video footage has emerged of the dramatic chase and arrest of three men accused of shooting up a home linked to an alleged Sydney gangland figure. The shooting happened about 9.20am, with police officers called to the Earl St home in Merrylands in the city's west. Bullets were fired at the house, but nobody was inside at the time. Ali Elmoubayed, an alleged member of the Alameddine enterprise, is linked to the address but dodged the shooting after reportedly leaving beforehand for the Parramatta Magistrates Court to request a change of bail address. A short time later, a burning Porsche was located in Beverley Crescent in Chester Hill, NSW Police said. NSW Polair captures a burning car on the streets of western Sydney. Picture: NSW Police 'The group left Chester Hill in a Hyundai before being arrested on McMahon Rd in Yagoona trying to flee from police on foot,' police said in a statement. 'They remain in police custody.' Footage captured by the NSW Police chopper unit shows the Porsche burning in the street, with black smoke billowing out across the western Sydney suburb. Police officers then track the blue Hyundai as it races through the streets. The three men, aged 20, 22 and 24, abandon the vehicle and try to run away, but are quickly apprehended by officers in the backyards of homes. The shooting has been referred to Taskforce Falcon and crime scenes have been established at both locations. The men abandoned their car and tried to run away on foot. Taskforce Falcon Commander Detective Superintendent Jason Box addressed the media in the afternoon and said the shooting had the potential to be fatal. 'There's always the possibility it could be fatal, or someone seriously injured,' he said. He said he expected the men to be charged with firearms offences alongside other possible offences. Superintendent Box added the police had not yet found anything to suggest the three men were 'affiliated or part of an organised crime network'. The Australian, whose tennis career has been blighted by significant injuries over the past three years, took to Instagram over the last 24 hours for a Q and A session with his 4.1 million followers. Using the caption 'Don't hold back, ask whatever', Kyrgios was hit with a wide range of questions and chose to respond to a number of them using Instagram stories. Among queries about his tennis career and his advice for others, the Canberran was also asked a question by someone who has been following his styling trends. Kyrgios replied with a video of him driving and the caption: '30 is unreal – not even in my prime yet. And shaved heads is UNREAL.' You can see the new look in the video below. Cracks had appeared in Kyrgios and Hatzi's relationship earlier this year. In a telling sign in this day and age, they both removed each other from their Instagram bios before Hatzi broke her silence on the rumours in April. 'It's been great,' Hatzi told The Daily Telegraph when asked about her life since the romance ended. 'I'm still going on with work and I have a few different brands that I'm working with at the moment.' She went on to insist that it's important to 'put yourself first' in life. Naturally, Kyrgios – who has stayed quiet about the details of the separation – was also asked about Hatzi during his fan session. 'Will you ever talk on the split with C or keeping it private?' was one question. He said: 'Things happen. I wish her nothing but the best. So many incredible memories that will stay with me.' Kyrgios was also asked what he thought of another former partner, tennis player Anna Kalinskaya, who later had a relationship with current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner which ended in May. Earlier this month, Kyrgios got tongues wagging after a public display with a woman being called a Hatzi 'look-alike'. Kyrgios began chatting with former Love Island reality TV contestant Mia Dalkos. It has not gone unnoticed that Dalkos, whose real name is Efthimia, has unmistakably similar features to the woman Kyrgios recently broke up with. Kyrgios and popular fashion designer Dalkos caused a stir with flirty recent social media engagements. Dalkos captured Kyrgios' attention on Instagram when she shared a video of herself glammed up at a hair salon. Kyrgios sparked romance rumours with Mia Dalkos (left) and his post on Hatzi. Photos: Instagram Kyrgios commented on the post by sharing a 'double eyes' emoji — a less than subtle way of showing Dalkos that he was interested in the post. The 23-year-old South Australian responded to the former Wimbledon finalist by posting a shy smiling emoji of her own. The 30-year-old Canberran followed up his first message by posting a blunt 'Beautiful' comment on a second photo Dalkos shared the following day. Kyrgios was also in the news in the past week after it emerged he had been axed from a commentary role with the BBC. Reports first landed on Wednesday morning this week the Australian tennis star has been told his services will not be required when the network begins its coverage of Wimbledon, beginning June 30. (Photo by Simon Bruty/Anychance/Getty Images) It comes after his appointment to the broadcaster's team for the event last year sparked uproar. In another body blow, The Telegraph reports Kyrgios will also not appear during ESPN's coverage of the tournament, despite working with the American broadcaster during the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025. It has been a brutal few weeks for the 30-year-old after he was last month forced to pull out of his plans to play doubles with partner Jordan Thompson at the French Open. Citing a recently flared up knee injury, Kyrgios was forced to pull out on the eve of the event and he last week confirmed he will not play at Wimbledon this year because of injuries.
