Alexander Straus to become Angel City head coach at end of May
Bayern Munich's Alexander Straus will become the next head coach of the National Women's Soccer League side (NWSL) Angel City, sources with knowledge of the deal have told The Athletic.
Straus' Bayern exit was confirmed by the German team on Thursday morning, with the Norwegian to remain in charge until the end of May. A Bayern statement said the decision to part ways 11 months into the two-year extension Straus signed last year was at his request 'to pursue a new challenge.' Bayern players were told on Wednesday and the squad was moved by his departure.

Angel City fired previous head coach Becki Tweed in December and subsequently conducted an extensive search for her replacement. Sam Laity has been serving as interim head coach since Tweed's departure.
The club's sporting director Mark Parsons said on The Athletic's Full Time with Meg Linehan podcast in February that the search had been narrowed down to four candidates in what had been a 'very detailed and thorough process.'
Angel City declined to comment when approached.
Straus was hired as Bayern head coach in 2022 and led the team to back-to-back Frauen-Bundesliga titles in 2022-23 and 23-24.
Before joining Bayern, the 49-year-old coached SK Brann in the top flight of his native Norway, winning the league twice.
Bayern are currently on course to win a third straight league title and are eight points clear of second-placed Wolfsburg. They have three league games remaining this season and can win the title if they beat Freiburg at home on Sunday.
Angel City have enjoyed an undefeated start to the 2025 NWSL season and are fourth in the standings after two wins and two draws. The club played its inaugural season in 2022 and made the playoffs the following year, before finishing 12th and missing the postseason in 2024, which saw Tweed leave her role.
Parsons has overseen the coaching hiring process since he joined Angel City in December as the club's sporting director following the departure of general manager Angela Hucles. Hucles parted ways with the club in December, two months after the NWSL sanctioned the organization for salary cap violations earlier last season. That included a $200,000 fine and a three-point deduction from its 2024 standings for violations of league rules in the 2023 season that resulted in Angel City exceeding the salary cap in 2024.
Hucles, along with club president Julie Uhrman, were suspended from all player transaction duties through the end of 2024.

Most popular 2025 NBA Mock Draft picks for Nets at No. 8
The post Most popular 2025 NBA Mock Draft picks for Nets at No. 8 appeared first on ClutchPoints. With the 2025 NBA Draft less than three weeks away, there is little consensus among big boards and projections beyond the first few picks. As has been the case throughout Sean Marks' tenure, the Brooklyn Nets have kept their cards close to their vest. The No. 8 pick is the team's first lottery selection since Marks took over in 2016. Advertisement What players could Brooklyn select with its first choice? Let's take a look at the latest projections in a mock draft roundup: Analyzing Nets' picks at No. 8 in latest NBA mock drafts Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports ESPN: Kon Kneuppel, SG/SF, Duke Kneuppel's elite outside shooting and high feel for the game have caught the eyes of scouts over the last year. The Duke forward shot a scorching 40.6 percent from three as a freshman and flashed secondary shot-creation and playmaking alongside Cooper Flagg. While there are questions about whether his limited athleticism will hinder him as an NBA scorer and defender, he possesses a bankable skill as a movement shooter, along with a developing offensive repertoire, an impressive IQ and a high motor. Advertisement All of this should make him a safe pick in the top 10. The Nets met with Kneuppel at the combine, and he said he will travel to Brooklyn for a workout sometime before the draft. Bleacher Report, Yahoo Sports: Noa Essengue, PF, Ratiopharm Ulm Essengue has climbed inside the top 10 of several big boards while putting together one of his most productive stretches of the season overseas. The 6-foot-9 forward is the second-youngest player in the draft (three days older than Cooper Flagg) and has had no issues producing in Germany's top professional league. He posted a career-high 22 points and 14 rebounds on 8-of-16 shooting from the field, 2-of-5 from three and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line during Game 1 of the German playoff semifinals on Sunday. Essengue doesn't possess an elite skill at this point in his development. He's a subpar shooter (25.6 percent from three) and has an underdeveloped handle. However, the 18-year-old is a foul-drawing machine, attempting 7.4 free throws per 36 minutes and converting at a 72.2 percent clip. He's also shown a soft touch around the rim, shooting 63.8 percent on twos. His impressive measurables (6-foot-9 height, 6-foot-11 wingspan, 9-foot-3 standing reach) and fluid athleticism bode well for his defensive upside. Advertisement While his poor outside shooting and limited ball-handling cast doubts about whether he can develop into a self-creator at the next level, he could be a home-run choice if everything clicks. The Ringer: Jeremiah Fears, PG, Oklahoma Most mock drafts project Fears to be taken before the Nets' selection. If he falls to eighth, he'd be a player fans could quickly get behind. The 18-year-old is among the top scorers in the draft, averaging 17.1 points as one of college basketball's youngest players this season. Teams looking for a lead ball-handler who can generate consistent paint touches, like Brooklyn, will salivate over that part of his game. Fears' detractors will point to his inconsistent outside shot (28.4 percent), struggles finishing at the rim (52.6 percent) and high turnover rate (3.4 per game). His defensive shortcomings add to those concerns. However, the young floor general has sound shooting mechanics (85.1 percent on free throws) and was tasked with carrying an immense load for an otherwise poor Oklahoma offense. Advertisement Fears told ClutchPoints he had a 'great' meeting with the Nets and worked out for the team at the draft combine. If his poor outside shooting this season turns out to be an outlier, there's plenty to love about his dynamic skill set. ClutchPoints, Fox Sports: Egor Demin, PG/SF, BYU Demin is arguably the most talented passer in this year's draft and has great size (6-foot-9) as a lead ball-handler. He reads defensive coverages with ease, hitting rolling big men, weakside cutters and skip passes within the flow of the offense. However, his limited athleticism and poor shooting (27.3 percent from three) have raised questions about his ability to be an offensive engine at the next level. Advertisement While Demin showed flashes of self-creation at BYU, he consistently struggled to create separation against college defenders. A semi-consistent three-point shot — forcing defenders to work over the top of screens instead of sagging under — would go a long way toward letting his playmaking shine. While he plays with a high motor, his limited agility and vertical explosiveness also cast doubts over whether he can be a plus defender. Demin met with the Nets at the combine, reportedly impressing several teams with his maturity. He also shot the ball very well during his pro day in Chicago. If that area of his game comes around, he has star upside as a lead offensive initiator. If it doesn't, he'll end up looking like a reach as a top-10 selection. Lukas Hradecky to fight for Bayer Leverkusen place after Mark Flekken's arrival
Bayer Leverkusen have been active in the transfer window with the arrival of Brentford's Mark Flekken for €10m their latest capture. The Dutchman will be competing with Lukas Hradecky to become Erik ten Hag's number one, but the latter has no intention of giving up his spot. 'I won't give away my place,' Hradecky told Finnish outlet Iltalehti. 'Let's see if there's a hybrid model in terms of playing.' Last season, the 35-year-old played 29 out of 34 Bundesliga games under Xabi Alonso, with Matej Kovar playing the other five. Kovar – who will likely leave Leverkusen – played more Champions League and German Cup games last season. Advertisement Before making a decision on his future, Hradecky will speak to Ten Hag to discover what his playing prospects will be like. 'I have a contract with Leverkusen, but I can't promise anything,' added the Finn. 'I will definitely consider it if a one-off offer comes from somewhere I can play safely.' Hradecky has been a loyal servant to Leverkusen following his free transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2018, playing 286 games across all competitions and becoming a Bundesliga and German Cup winner with die Werkself, but faces stiff competition from Flekken. Is Mark Flekken an upgrade? The former Freiburg goalkeeper comes with a wealth of experience having played 80 games in the Bundesliga, as well as seven games in the Europa League. He would be seen as an upgrade to Lukas Hradecky (35, Contract until 2026) and Matej Kovar (25, Contract until 2027), both of whom shared the No. 1 shirt last season. GGFN | Daniel Pinder

Transfer news: Gittens to Chelsea, Kepa to Arsenal, Livramento to Man City
There's plenty of juicy transfer news circling as some of the Premier League's big boys continue to act fast in the summer transfer window. MORE — Premier League ins and outs from the summer transfer window Below we round up the latest transfers news concerning Premier League clubs. Gittens the latest young star heading to Chelsea? A report from The Athletic says that Chelsea are in negotiations with Borussia Dortmund to sign 20-year-old winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens who wants the move and a seven-year contract is reportedly on the table. Fabrizio Romano has added that Dortmund have rejected a $40 million bid but Chelsea are going to improve their bid to sign Gittens. The England U21 international has played regularly in the Bundesliga since joining Dortmund from Man City in 2022. He played in City's U23 side alongside new signing Liam Delap, midfielder Romeo Lavia and star playmaker Cole Palmer, so he should slot in seamlessly. Gittens left City just before current Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was appointed as manager of their U23 side, but Maresca is clearly using his connections with that incredible U23 side. Gittens' arrival is a direct replacement for Jadon Sancho, as the winger is back at Manchester United after Chelsea declined the option to make his move permanent this summer. It lines up well with Chelsea's recruitment policy of signing young, hungry talent and Gittens has an eye for goal, makes things happen with his driving runs and has a lot of experience at the top level for his age. It all makes a lot of sense. Kepa to Arsenal is very sensible Gunner Blog has revealed that Arsenal are close to signing goalkeeper Kepa from Chelsea, with his $6.7 million release clause to be activated. The Spanish international goalkeeper, 30, was very impressive on loan at Bournemouth last season and it's a bit of a surprise that he's willing to go back to being a number two. But he will provide stiff competition for David Raya and it's very likely he will play at least 10-15 games a season to try and keep Raya fresh. This is a savvy move from Arsenal and gives them real competition in goal. Who knows, maybe Kepa will even usurp Raya? It's possible. Livramento to Man City is proving difficult Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Manchester City are struggling to sign one of their main targets, Tino Livramento. Per his report, Newcastle aren't budging on their valuation of Livramento as the England international is clearly Pep Guardiola's top target to be their long-term right back. The deal is 'on standby' for now as City may now turn to other options. Livramento, 22, is a fine player and has shaken off his awful luck with injuries to be a really consistent player for Newcastle over the last 12 months. He was key in their League Cup win and reaching the Champions League, so Newcastle do not want to lose the Chelsea academy product. But this could be a once-in-a-lifetime move for Livramento and his pace, direct running and ability to get on the ball and surge into midfield suits Guardiola's system perfectly.
