Kuwait introduces new airport rule: Declare cash, gold, jewellery over KWD 3,000 or face penalties
The new rule was implemented in July.
It is done to align with international anti-money laundering and anti-smuggling. Here are five things travellers should know to avoid penalties.
Cash, Gold, Jewelry; what to declare
As per new rule, those entering or exiting Kuwait must declare if they are carrying more than KWD 3,000 in cash or valuables equivalent to the amount.
Gold
Any precious metals
Jewellery, even if you are wearing them
Luxury watches
Any branded accessories
High-end electronics
Bearer instruments such as bonds, cheques, or promissory notes
This rule is applicable to all foreign tourists, expats, returning citizens, and GCC nationals.
What was the need of this rule
According to Kuwait's General Administration of Customs, the new rule is a part of the effort to fight financial crimes including money laundering, illegal remittances, and smuggling. The move aligns with the country's obligations under the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the World Customs Organization (WCO). With all this, Kuwait, a major Gulf country, is making sure it complies with global norms.
Where to declare the valuables
Those carrying valuables or cash must declare them at the customs checkpoint before leaving or entering the terminal area. There are two main ways to do this:
At the airport
: One can declare the valuable at the designated customs counters near the baggage claim and exit areas.
Online
: Travellers can also do pre-arrival declarations via Kuwait's electronic customs portal.
Also make sure you are carrying all supporting documents, such as invoices, receipts, or proof of ownership.
What if you don't declare
For those who don't follow the rule, it can have serious consequences. It includes:
Immediate seizure of undeclared cash or goods
Fines and penalties
Legal proceedings under Kuwait's customs and anti-financial crime laws
Temporary detention or blacklisting (in some cases)
Tips for Travellers
Here are some important tips to help travellers stay on the right side of the law:
Know the value: Before arriving at the airport, make sure you assess your assets
Keep valuables in hand luggage: Items like gold, watches, and electronics.
Keep original packaging if possible
So whether you're visiting Kuwait for business, or leisure, make sure you're fully informed about the new changes.

Coimbatore is an ideal destination for mid-sized GCCs, says CII
The large number of technical education institutions in Coimbatore and Information Technology (IT) space under construction at multiple locations make Coimbatore an ideal location to house mid-sized Global Capability Centres (GCCs), said Prashanth Subramanian, former chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Coimbatore zone. The CII has launched an initiative to increase the visibility of Coimbatore to attract GCC investments. There are 30-35 GCCs in the district, each having 100 to 300 seaters. The domain expertise available in Coimbatore in different aspects of manufacturing, the strong presence of academia, and an existing IT eco-system all make Coimbatore an ideal location, he said. Cost and talent availability are the primary drivers of any GCC set up. Coimbatore can offer both. The local industries can grow in this space and a couple of companies have already taken the lead. 'We need more such companies,' Mr. Prashanth added. The CII plans to prioritise on local industries by creating the required visibility for them and handholding the interested companies. It also plans to tap into the alumni network of Coimbatore educational institutions. Most of them who have studied in Coimbatore have moved out. They should get the confidence that Coimbatore can be a GCC hub. The executives of Coimbatore companies who travel to other cities or countries should also talk about the capabilities of Coimbatore. When GCCs set shop here, the talent will get trained in multiple areas of work and an ecosystem will develop here to cater to global standards, he said. Expansion of Coimbatore airport remains a non-starter and is one of the main challenges that needs to be addressed. Another area that needs focus is strengthening the industry-academia collaboration, Mr. Prashanth added.
