Police appeal after theft of more than £220,000 of jewellery
Police are appealing for help after between £220,000 and £240,000 of jewellery and watches were stolen from a Plymouth shop.Devon and Cornwall Police said the burglary was reported as haven taken place at Wants Jewellers on Armada Way, Plymouth between 17:30 and 19:00 GMT on 13 February.Officers said they believed the suspect left the scene via the roof of the adjacent property onto Cornwall Street but returned at about 22:00 GMT to steal further items.Det Sgt Paula Tucker, who is leading the investigation, said they were releasing new images of a man they would like to identify and speak to "in the hope that it may jog someone's memory".
Det Sgt Tucker said it had been established that a suspect gained entry to the vacant premises, which was previously Barista Brothers next door, and used it to access Wants as early as 5 February."The suspect is known to have been in the city centre in the early hours of the evening on February 5, 6, 8, 9 and 12, around the Cornwall Street and Armada Way area," she said."The suspect has also been seen in the Mutley Plain area. "He is believed to be Eastern European and could have been staying locally in short term rented accommodation such as an Airbnb."Anyone with information is asked to get in contact via 101 or Crimestoppers, quoting reference 50250038839.

Transnistria receives significant economic and military support from Moscow, and the region's politicians have voiced their intent for it to become part of Russia. The region's location between the pro-Europe governments in Moldova and Ukraine make it impossible for Putin to get soldiers in at present. While Moldova currently has an EU-friendly government, its PM has said Russia is meddling in its upcoming election this September. Prime Minister Dorin Recean told the FT this is likely in the hope that a more pro-Kremlin government might allow for Russian troops to be sent to Transnistria. "This is a huge effort to undermine Moldovan democracy," he told the paper. "They want to consolidate their military presence in the Transnistrian region." Russian troops have been based in Transnistria since 1992, when the Kremlin supported the region in its war of independence from Moldova. However, the numbers have substantially wound down over the years, with there currently only being about 1,500 soldiers fighting under the Russian banner. But only a few of these will have actually been sent by Moscow, with most being locals who signed up. Think tank The Institute for the Study of War forecast last October that Russia might use its ties to Transnistria "to establish long-term influence over Moldovan domestic and foreign policies". Recean further highlighted the ominous military threats to Ukraine and NATO that could arise from extra Russian troops in the region. Its location to Ukraine's southwest could raise fresh headaches for Kyiv if Russia used Transnistria to open up a new front in the war. "You can imagine with 10,000 troops, what the leverage and pressure would be on the southwestern part of Ukraine," he said. But Recean also noted the area's proximity to Romania, which is a NATO country. If Russian forces threatened or attacked Romania - or any other NATO member - then the entire alliance would be obliged to come to its aid. NATO Article 5 sets out that an attack on one member state is an attack on all, meaning Russian attacks against a NATO country could quickly spiral into all-out war. Transnistria's history Transnistria is a tiny slither of land along Moldova's border with Ukraine The region has been controlled by Russian backed separatists for decades following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It declared independence in 1990, which was followed by a war that saw Russia support Transnistria's independence. Moscow has maintained a strong military presence in the territory since 1992. Many of Transnistria's political leaders have long voiced their intent for the region to become a part of Russia. But it still remains internationally recognised as part of Moldova - a country that seeks closer co-operation with the EU. Transnistria has a population of around 465,000. Fears of a war between the West and Russia over Transnistria have been amplified by the separatist region's leader Vadim Krasnoselsky. He told the Russian TASS news agency: "A war in Transnistria would mean a direct conflict between Russia and NATO. "I don't have the slightest doubt about it. Everything is closely intertwined here. "Both Romania, a NATO member, and the Russian Federation have interests here." Recean added that the 10,000-troop figure was based on intelligence assessments. "Currently, their forces there are almost meaningless," he said. "But with a higher military presence in Transnistria that a Russia-leaning government can allow for, they can consolidate." Moldova was part of the Soviet Union before its collapse in 1991. In recent years, it has sought to pursue closer ties with the European Union, and became an official candidate to join the EU in 2022. A referendum held last year committing Moldova on its path to EU membership passed by just 0.7% of the vote amid what was widely believed to be a Russian interference campaign. Carnoustie man fights on in static caravan battle after admitting bid to block council removal
A Carnoustie man now facing a council bill for the removal of an unlawful static caravan from his garden is vowing to continue his two-year planning fight. On Monday, Angus Council took direct action to clear the one-time Airbnb holiday home in Ireland Street. It has been at the centre of a lengthy planning tussle which ended in potential disaster last month. Mr Lindsay's garden borders the main east coast rail line. He knocked down part of a concrete wall while trying to bring the caravan back into the garden in breach of a council enforcement order. Rail services between Dundee and Aberdeen were suspended for hours during the clear-up operation. It had been hanging over the pavement at Ireland Street since May 22, until contractors arrived to move it on Monday morning. However, it involved a day-long operation during which Mr Lindsay, 50, admitted using his Tesla car to block the caravan in to prevent it being towed away. He said he has been told he must foot the removal bill. The mobile home is now in a storage yard. 'There was a bundle of complaints from neighbours, then roads got involved,' he said. 'Roads were very good, they were patient with me. But they said it was obstructing the pavement. 'They gave me a date to remove it on my own, or they would remove it at cost to me. 'Yesterday (Monday) was D-Day. 'I was trying my best to move it on my own. Two feet was all I had left to go.' He added: 'There was a bit of a protest from me because I parked my car in front of it. 'They then said they would tow the car, which could have damaged it because it is electric. 'I was weighing up my options – my car or the caravan.' He continued: 'I'm still overwhelmed by the whole situation. It stinks of abuse of power against the little guy.' He added: 'I don't know where the money is going to come from. I told them I can't afford it being removed.' Mr Lindsay lodged an application for a certificate of lawful use for the caravan in April. He says it is now stripped out and will be used for garden storage and as a family snug. But he previously admitted 'jumping the gun' by trying to bring the mobile home back on site before an official decision on the application. 'My legal argument is it's a former caravan that's now a structure. 'I will take the wheels off and use it for storage and to play games, pool etc. 'It's whether they (the council) think it's a caravan, the burden of proof is on them. 'If my application is refused, I have an appeal process.' An Angus Council spokesperson said: 'The removal of the caravan was the conclusion of a legal process followed by Angus Council.' It said it would be 'liaising with the owner regarding next steps'. 'The planning application is pending decision and has a determination deadline of June 14,' the spokesperson added.

Fed-up Edinburgh residents have had enough of 'party' Airbnb
One neighbour said: "People are going at all hours of the night and there is no real soundproofing despite the owner making modifications. It is ridiculous. He cannot get away with this." Fed-up residents who live near an Airbnb that was suspended from the site because of problem parties, are furious that it's up for rent again. The flat in the Faulburn area of Edinburgh is the only known short term let (STL) in the block. After complaints from neighbours about loud guests wreaking havoc, the property was suspended from Airbnb site for 30 days. They claimed youths were falling around the street, acting aggressively with one another and consuming alcohol at the property. But they've been left livid after discovering the flat had been listed on for several months before it reappeared on Airbnb in May 2025 when its suspension ended. Resident and business owner, Fraser Ramsay, said he had to go down to the flat last Tuesday because he couldn't sleep with the noise. He told Edinburgh Live: 'I told the man to keep the noise down or I would phone the police and he agreed to do so but then I heard him through the night again. 'It ruins your next day, I'm a business owner, and going out to working not having a good sleep isn't great. The owner of this Airbnb needs to sell up to someone who will live here long term or rent out the flat to a proper resident. 'At least if it is a permanent neighbour in the block we will be able to build relationships and have common courtesy. At the moment there is a security issue as well because these are strangers. 'People are going at all hours of the night and there is no real soundproofing despite the owner making modifications. It is ridiculous. He cannot get away with this. 'End of the day it is important this comes to an end. When it all kicks off it is horrible.' Fraser has been in regular contact with Edinburgh Council to try to get answers as to how the owner was able to re-list the property for short term rentals on Airbnb. Correspondence between the home owner and the council stated a notice had been given to the STL landlord ordering them to cease operating the Airbnb unless they are able to lodge an appeal by late June 2025. It is understood Airbnb suspended the property originally due to a party taking place at the property which is a breach of the platforms rules. However the property owner is understood to have carried out 'sound proofing' alterations to the property, which led to the ban being lifted. Airbnb protocol states the company will potentially deactivate a property if they are contacted by a relevant local authority which believes the listing is operating illegally. It is understood the council have not made contact with Airbnb regarding the above property. In a message seen by Edinburgh Live, council officials told Fraser: 'Just a quick e-mail to advise that enforcement notices were served on the property on Wednesday 21 May 2025. The property owner has until 25 June 2025 to appeal the notice. 'If he fails to do so by this date, then he would require to comply with its requirements i.e. cease the use of the property as a short term let by 25 July 2025.' Councillor Joan Griffiths Planning Convener said: 'We have issued an enforcement notice requesting that the owner of this property ceases to use it as a short term let. They have until 24 July 2025 to comply with this notice unless they appeal.' An Airbnb spokesperson said: 'We take feedback from local residents seriously, and this listing was temporarily suspended in line with our policies and the host has since taken steps to address this issue. Parties are banned on Airbnb and we may remove this listing if further policy violations occur. 'While issues on Airbnb are exceptionally rare, residents can contact us 24/7 via our neighbourhood support line and we investigate all reports received through this channel.'
