Odisha to adopt HAWK for wildlife crime monitoring
Addressing the state-level DFO conference here, PCCF (Wildlife)-cum-chief wildlife warden Prem Kumar Jha said the state wildlife wing will soon use HAWK technology to replace manual documentation of wildlife crimes, and equip forest field staff and wildlife crime investigating officials with realtime data tracking, analysis and intelligence generation. The state will also leverage the cutting-edge technology for effective wildlife management.
The cloud-based information management system used by the Kerala Forest department to combat wildlife crime will enhance forest officials' ability to prevent and address illegal wildlife trade and related activities, sources said.
Jha said the state is also planning to launch PRAHAR application for submission of monthly progress report at divisional-level for regular monitoring of forest and wildlife management and to improve transparency.
He spoke on other advanced technologies being used for forest and wildlife management. Use of AI camera towers and AI integrated trail guard cameras have immensely helped officials in Similipal and other forest landscapes to monitor movement of the wildlife and crackdown against the wildlife criminals. Use of thermal drone and other technologies have also proven to be huge success, he said.

SC refuses to grant relief to IAS officer in graft case
Cuttack: The Supreme Court refused to grant relief to senior IAS officer Bishnupada Sethi in a corruption case, dismissing his plea challenging an order by Orissa high court that had denied him anticipatory bail. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih in its order on Aug 4 said it was 'not inclined to interfere' with the high court's July 28 ruling. However, the court allowed Sethi the liberty to surrender and apply for regular bail, saying it would be considered 'on its own merits'. The case stems from the arrest of a group general manager of a public sector unit on Dec 8, 2024, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a Bhubaneswar-based real estate firm. During interrogation of the manager, Sethi's name reportedly emerged, following which CBI raided the senior bureaucrat's residence on Feb 18 this year. Sethi had earlier approached the high court for anticipatory bail after his petition seeking to quash the CBI probe was dismissed on June 20. The high court termed his plea 'premature' as the investigation was still at an early stage.

Man nabbed with 566 fake currency notes
Ghaziabad: An assistant manager of a pharma company was arrested by Ghaziabad police on Wednesday on being found with fake currency with a face value of Rs 2.8 lakh. Indirapuram ACP Abhishek Srivastava said cops were conducting checks near Sahibabad railway underpass in Vasundhara's Sector 1 when they came upon Ujjwal Jha (26). A total of 566 counterfeit notes with face value of Rs 500 each was recovered from Jha, who is a resident of Delhi's Mandoli. Police said a case was registered under relevant sections of BNS, and necessary legal action was being taken. Five months ago, Jha purchased fake currency with a face value of Rs 30,000 with Rs 10,000 in real currency. Recently, he got fake notes with Rs 3 lakh face value in exchange for Rs 1 lakh. Police are now trying to identify this individual," Srivastava said. The ACP added that Jha had been circulating the notes to his contacts, taking real currency for fake notes with a face value of double the amount. A senior police officer said they had unearthed chats between Jha and others in which they were discussing the fake notes. They also found orders the accused had received. Police are checking Jha's call log details, social media chats and emails. A team has been formed to investigate the matter.

Odisha govt suspends BSE vice president in OTET question paper leak
The exam, originally scheduled for July 20, 2025, was postponed due to the leak, with a data entry operator allegedly accessing the paper from Mohanty's laptop. BHUBANESWAR: Odisha govt on Tuesday suspended vice-president of the Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha, Nihar Ranjan Mohanty, following his arrest by the state Crime Branch for his involvement in the Special Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test (OTET) 2025 question paper leak. Mohanty was taken into custody on Sunday following intensive interrogation by investigators on Saturday. His arrest brought the total number of accused connected to the leak to eight. The OTET exam—scheduled for July 20, 2025, for in-service primary school teachers—was postponed just hours before it was to begin due to the circulation of identical handwritten and printed question papers on social media platforms. Investigators alleged that the principal accused, Jitan Moharana, a data entry operator at BSE, accessed the question paper from Mohanty's laptop—violating security protocol—and distributed it further. Moharana reportedly received Rs 2.4–Rs 2.5 lakh through UPI transfers linked to the leak. Call logs revealed over 100 calls between Mohanty and Moharana outside office hours during the past three months, underscoring a suspicious nexus. Several other individuals, including teachers and brokers, have been implicated for translating, distributing, and monetizing the leaked papers. The OTET exam is now rescheduled for August 31, 2025, and the BSE has introduced stricter security protocols. Admit cards will be issued starting August 22, and the test will be conducted in two sessions to restore credibility and discourage malpractices, official sources said.
