The women's soccer landscape in North America includes established-leagues, emerging newcomers

What does the landscape for women's professional soccer look like in North America?
The National Women's Soccer League, which kicked off in 2013, is arguably the top league in the region. Mexico's Liga MX Femenil is in its eighth season.
But in the past year, two other women's leagues have jumped into the fray: the USL Super League, which is in the midst of its first season, and Canada's Northern Super League.
Two other leagues could join next year, occupying the tier below the NWSL and USL Super League on the women's soccer pyramid in the United States.
National Women's Soccer League
After two other attempts at professional women's soccer in the United States failed, the NWSL finally took hold. Founded with eight teams, the NWSL was boosted in the early days by the U.S., Canadian and Mexican soccer federations, which paid the salaries of their national teams players who played in the league. When Denver and Boston join next season, the NWSL will have 16 teams. Team valuations have risen dramatically in three years, with Angel City valued highest, at $250 million. The league has been able to attract some high-profile sponsors, including Nike, Ally Bank, Elf Cosmetics and AT&T.
Liga MX Femenil
The women's counterpart to Liga MX in Mexico has 18 teams, all associated with men's clubs. The league, founded in 2017, features two competitions each year: the Apertura that runs from late summer through the fall and the Clausura, which runs from January to May, similar to the Liga MX men. The league has attracted high-profile foreign players including Women's World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso and France's Amandine Henry. Big-name sponsors include Nike and Amazon. Mexico also has a lower division, Liga TDP Femenil, but it is not professional.
USL Super League
Nearing the conclusion of its debut season, the league sits on the top tier of women's soccer alongside the NWSL, but it does not share the same status in the U.S. ecosystem, largely because it is new and teams are located in some smaller markets. The Super League has eight teams with a ninth set to join next year. Investors are taking notice, and Gainbridge financial services company will be the league's title sponsor next season.
Northern Super League
Canada's first pro league kicked off in April with six teams: the Halifax Tides, Montreal Roses, AFC Toronto, Calgary Wild, Ottawa Rapid and Vancouver Rise. One of the highest-profile players in Quinn, who won a gold medal with Canada at the Tokyo Olympics. Quinn scored the league's first goal, converting a penalty for a 1-0 Vancouver victory over Calgary in front of more than 14,000 fans at BC Place. Sponsors of the league include Coca-Cola, Toyota and DoorDash.
WPSL Pro
This second-division league will launch next year with a focus on developing players. The league got a boost from the Cleveland Soccer Group, which pivoted to WPSL Pro when it did not land an NWSL team in the latest round of expansion. Cleveland's group is fielding a team and investing in the league itself. Cleveland will be joined in the startup league by teams in Atlanta, Dallas, North Carolina, Oklahoma City, Sioux Falls, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
NWSL Division II League
The NWSL recently confirmed it had asked U.S. Soccer to sanction a lower-division women's professional soccer league that could launch as early as next year. With at least six teams, the new league seeks to develop players who aren't quite ready for the top level. U.S. Soccer has certain conditions for Division II sanctioning, including a minimum number of teams and stadiums that seat at least 2,000. In the case of the NWSL, all the lower-division teams would be affiliated with top-tier clubs, sharing ownership and infrastructure.

Both benchmarks climbed about 2% on Tuesday to a two-week high, supported by worries over supply disruptions from Canadian wildfires and expectations that Iran will reject a U.S. nuclear deal proposal that is key to easing sanctions on the major oil producer. "Despite fears over Canadian supply and stalled Iran-U.S. nuclear talks, oil markets are struggling to extend gains," said Tsuyoshi Ueno, senior economist at NLI Research Institute, adding that OPEC+ production increases were capping the upside. Ueno said hopes for progress in U.S.-China trade talks were overshadowed by profit-taking, as investors remained cautious over the broader economic fallout from tariffs. U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will likely speak this week, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday, days after Trump accused China of violating an agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions. As the Trump administration pressed U.S. trading partners to provide their best offers by Wednesday, the protracted negotiations and moving deadlines have led economists to scale back growth forecasts. On Tuesday, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) cut its global growth forecast as the fallout from Trump's trade war takes a bigger toll on the U.S. economy. Meanwhile, scores of wildfires have swept across Canada since the start of May, forcing thousands of evacuations and disrupting crude oil production in the country. U.S. crude stocks fell by 3.3 million barrels in the week ended May 30, market sources said, citing American Petroleum Institute figures on Tuesday. Gasoline inventories rose by 4.7 million barrels and distillate stocks rose by about 760,000 barrels. The Vancouver Rise FC Academy was drawn with defending champion Gotham FC and fellow NWSL side Washington Spirit in Group B for the second edition of the CONCACAF W Champions Cup, which kicks off in August. Group B also includes Mexico's CF Monterrey Femenil and El Salvador's Alianza Women FC. Group A is comprised of Mexico's Club America and CF Pachuca Femenil, NWSL champion Orlando Pride, Costa Rica's LD Alajuelense and Panama's FC Chorrillo. The group stage, to run from August to October, will see each team play two home and two away games. The top two from each group advance to the semifinals, set for May 2026. The 10-team tournament is the elite women's club competition in the region that covers North and Central America and the Caribbean. The winner qualifies for the 2027 FIFA Women's Champions Cup, an annual tournament featuring the champions of each confederation, and for the inaugural FIFA Women's Club World Cup, set to debut in 2028. Gotham, the 2023 NWSL champion, defeated Mexico's Tigres UANL 1-0 in the May 25 final of the inaugural edition of the tournament. As winner, Gotham qualifies for the 2028 FIFA Women's Club World Cup. The Vancouver Rise Academy, formerly Whitecaps Girls Elite FC, qualified virtue of winning the League1 Canada Inter-Provincial Championship — the same pathway it used for 2024-25 qualification. Whitecaps Girls Elite failed to reach the knockout rounds after finishing fourth in Group B at 1-3-0, outscored 16-2 after losses to Club America (7-0) and NWSL's Portland Thorns (6-0) and San Diego Wave (2-0) and a win over Panama's Sante Fe FC (2-1). The Northern Super League is currently in discussions with Canada Soccer and CONCACAF about the qualification process for future editions. Gotham was the highest-scoring team in the inaugural edition of the CONCACAF W Champions Cup with 25 goals. CF Monterrey won the 2024 Apertura title while Alianza Women won the 2024 Apertura and Clausura titles in El Salvador for a domestic four-peat. 'It will be weird': Cleary eyes first clash with Luai

There was a time when playing against Nathan Cleary brought Jarome Luai to tears, such was the beating Cleary's team gave him. Fast forward 15-odd years, and Cleary predicts it'll be all love and respect - and possibly a little sledging - when the four-time premiership winning teammates square off at NRL level for the first time. Wests Tigers recruit Luai hosts Cleary's Penrith at CommBank Stadium on Sunday, some eight months after leaving the Panthers for a regular job as an NRL game manager. Luai won a remarkable 78 of 89 matches playing as Cleary's co-pilot in the halves at the Panthers, the pair presiding over a dynasty the likes of which had never been seen in salary cap-era rugby league. But the shared history goes way back to their early adolescence, when Cleary moved with his family from Auckland and began turning out for local club Penrith Brothers - rivals of Luai's St Marys Saints. As professionals, the duo played against one another in the 2022 World Cup final as Cleary's Australia beat Luai and Samoa. But Cleary's mind goes to those park footy days - half a lifetime ago - when he's asked what it will be like to face Luai on Sunday. "We had a few duels back then but obviously it's been a long time," the Panthers halfback said. "I'm looking forward to it. "I do remember probably the biggest upset in junior footy history. We beat them one day and they were stacked. They were so good. "They used to beat us just about 50-nil every time they versed us and one day we got them. "He (Luai) might have cried. I'm not sure that'll happen again." Cleary admits "it will be weird" to think of Luai as a rival again this week, with the pair having begun their journey through the Panthers' junior system not long after those days with Brothers and St Marys. This year, Cleary has taken a keen interest in the Tigers, who appear to finally be turning the corner under Luai's guidance following three consecutive wooden spoons. "It's been good to see them playing some good footy, particularly when they've got momentum, they're one of the best teams in the comp, I reckon," he said. "Just his energy alone has lifted a lot of players around him. That's probably his greatest asset." It's one of the many qualities Cleary admires in Tigers halfback Luai. "There's just always that mutual respect there. We don't talk all the time but whenever we do or whenever we see each other, it's always love," he said. "You'll never be able to take away what we've been able to achieve together. It's always respect and love whenever we see each other." But if Luai tries to get under Cleary's skin the way the Panthers co-captain did to him all those years ago, Cleary says he may have to consider biting back at his good mate. "I don't really start the chirp but if he starts it then we'll see," Cleary said with a smile.
