Edinburgh fall short in South Africa as Bulls progress to URC semi-final

Irish Examiner31-05-2025
URC: Bulls 42 Edinburgh 33
The Bulls claimed a 42-33 victory over Edinburgh in an exhilarating United Rugby Championship quarter-final at Loftus Versfeld.
Wes Goosen opened the scoring after five minutes before Ross Thompson's double came either side of Cameron Hanekom's try for the South Africans.
Tries from David Kriel in the 32nd minute and Harold Vorster four minutes later ensured the Bulls went into the break only 21-18 behind.
The Bulls stepped it up early in the second half as Canan Moodie showed a great turn of pace to crash over as Edinburgh's defence had lost control.
Keagan Johannes and Ruan Nortje went over to make it 39-21 and although Edinburgh responded with efforts from Ewan Ashman and Goosen, the game was up.

Fans have reacted aptly to Leinster's new 'piddle' away shirt

It's that time of year across all winter sports where the new season is on the horizon and teams get to unveil their new kits. Kits have become more popular than ever in recent years, and fans lap up new releases – when they're done right. Well, ahead of the new URC season next month, the Irish provinces have all released their new kits to some great acclaim, and it's fair to say the same cannot be said for Leinster. The defending URC Champions released their new away kit made by Castore on Tuesday morning, and let's just say people have noticed an unfortunate design flaw on it. Leah Tarpey. Pic: @leinsterrugby/Instagram To put it as politely possible, it looks like the players have had an accident and at that, it looks like a quite dehydrated accident. If that colours looks familiar, you ought to drink more water, the Mayo Clinic recommends 3.7 litres. The comments to the original tweet are a treasure trove for hilarious gifs poking fun at the new jersey. Josh van der Flier in the new Leinster away shirt. Pic: @leinsterrugby/Instagram Some French fans also noticed that the away kit resembles that of Ronan O'Gara's La Rochelle, in particular the jersey worn when the French side beat Leinster in the Champions Cup Final in Dublin in 2023. One fan put it; 'Very nice nod to the @staderochelais with this yellow color #SRfever.' While another said; 'White jersey, yellow gradient, excellent idea Leinster' with an accompanying image of La Rochelle's victory in 2023. So it's fair to say these kits mightn't fly off the shelves straight away, but there's no doubt that if Leinster finally get over the line and win their coveted Champions Cup this season, fans won't care what they're wearing. They get their season underway with a tour to South Africa for their first two rounds. They begin it in Cape Town against the DHL Stormers on Friday September 26, before travelling up to Pretoria to face the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday October 4.

Siya Kolisi starts at number 8 for Springboks against Wallabies

Manie Libbok has been named at fly-half and captain Siya Kolisi at number 8 for the first time as South Africa selected a side that is likely to play with ball in hand for their Rugby Championship opener against Australia at Ellis Park on Saturday (4.10pm Irish time). The world champion Springboks are seeking a fifth successive win against the Wallabies as they also seek to retain their southern hemisphere crown won last year. Scrum-half Grant Williams is alongside Libbok, with battering ram Andre Esterhuizen at inside centre and Jesse Kriel in the number 13 jersey. The back three includes full-back Aphelele Fassi, with Kurt-Lee Arendse and Edwill van der Merwe on the wing. Kolisi switches to number 8 having played much of the recent United Rugby Championship season there for the Sharks, with Marco van Staden and Pieter-Steph du Toit the two flankers. Veterans Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager are the lock pairing, while hooker Malcolm Marx has props Ox Nche and Wilco Louw either side of him. "We've been experimenting with player combinations during the (July internationals) and at our conditioning camp in the last two weeks, and we believe this team will allow us to play the type of rugby we want to play against Australia," Erasmus (above) said. "All of the starters except for Edwill have faced them before, and we are confident that he is ready for this challenge." Centre Damian De Allende is sidelined through injury and wing Cheslin Kolbe was not selected as a precaution despite returning to training last week. Erasmus, who switched his team announcement to Monday, has opted for a 5:3 split between forwards and backs, another sign the Springboks intend to run the ball. Scrum-half Cobus Reinach, wing/centre Canan Moodie and utility back Damian Willemse are the three backline options. "They (Australia) are a physical and well-coached team, and we'll certainly not underestimate how much those performances (against the British & Irish Lions), combined with their motivation to bounce back strongly against us after the last few results between the teams, and win their first match ever at Ellis Park, will inspire them," Erasmus said. South Africa: Aphelele Fassi; Edwill van der Merwe, Jesse Kriel, Andre Esterhuizen, Kurt-Lee Arendse; Manie Libbok, Grant Williams; Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx, Wilco Louw; Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager; Marco van Staden, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi (capt).
