Sri Lanka peg back Bangladesh to 220/8
On a surface turning from the outset, Bangladesh's innings never found momentum despite multiple starts. Six batsmen crossed 20, but none could convert into a big score, with opener Shadman Islam top-scoring with 46. Veteran Mushfiqur Rahim (35) and Litton Das (30) offered resistance in the middle, but their efforts were undone by disciplined bowling from Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka rotated their bowling resources effectively. Left-arm pacer Vishwa Fernando (2/35), debutant spinner Sonal Dinusha (2/22), and right-arm quick Asitha Fernando (2/43) led the attack. Dhananjaya de Silva and Tharindu Ratnayake chipped in with timely breakthroughs to maintain pressure on the Bangladeshi line-up.
Opting to bat first, Bangladesh lost Anamul Haque for a duck early. A brief 38-run stand between Shadman and Mominul Haque was broken by de Silva, after which the middle order faltered. Rain interrupted play with the visitors at 90/4.
Post the rain delay, Mushfiqur and Litton added a crucial 67-run stand, but Dinusha broke through before Tea. Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz looked to rebuild again, but Dinusha struck once more, followed by Vishwa Fernando and Asitha removing Miraz and Nayeem Hasan, respectively, before close of play.
Brief Scores (Day 1):
Bangladesh 220/8 in 72 overs (Shadman Islam 46, Mushfiqur Rahim 35; Sonal Dinusha 2/22, Vishwa Fernando 2/35, Asitha Fernando 2/43) vs Sri Lanka.

'Rohit Sharma should not have had a place in India XI': Irfan Pathan's Sydney revelation; ‘You wouldn't misbehave…'
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan sensationally revealed details about Rohit Sharma's interview with broadcasters in Sydney after he decided to 'opt out' of the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia. Pathan said they were compelled to publicly support the then-India Test captain despite his meagre returns in the format over the last three series. Irfan Pathan had interviewed Rohit Sharma during Sydney Test vs Australia In a teaser clip released by Lallantop on Wednesday, Pathan acknowledged Rohit's white-ball brilliance but highlighted his notably poor Test performances. Across eight Test matches last year against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia, the 37-year-old scored just 164 runs, with a single half-century. During the tour of Australia, where he played three games, Rohit averaged only 6.20 – the lowest ever by a visiting captain in Australia (minimum five innings). Pathan stressed that had Rohit not been captain, he would likely have been benched after such performances. 'Rohit Sharma is an amazing player in white-ball cricket, but his average in Test cricket that year was 6, so we said that if he was not the captain, he would not have had a place in the team, and this is true,' he said. Amid mounting criticism and questions over his Test future, Rohit was not included for the series finale in Sydney. While many speculated that he was dropped, Rohit clarified in an interview that he had voluntarily chosen to 'opt out.' Pathan revealed that despite knowing Rohit Sharma's place in the playing XI was not secure, they were compelled to publicly back him during that interview. "People say that we supported Rohit Sharma more than necessary. Of course, when someone comes to interview on your broadcasting channel, you will not misbehave with them, right? You have invited him, so you will behave politely. When Rohit came to interview, we were, of course, polite, and we had to show that, because he was our guest. So that was connected and said we were supporting him, but it was we who had said that he should keep fighting, but that said, he should not have had a place in the playing XI. If he was not the captain of the team, he would have been dropped," he said.

FC Goa defeat Oman's Al Seeb to seal AFC Champions League Two Group stage berth
Margao, Aug 13 (UNI) FC Goa sealed their spot in the AFC Champions League Two 2025-26 Group Stage after staving off a late fightback from Al Seeb Club of Oman to walk away with a 2-1 win in their Preliminary Stage tie at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here today. Dejan Drazic and Javier Siverio scored for FC Goa, and the Gaurs will now wait to discover their Group Stage opponents on Friday. Al Seeb started aggressively, testing FC Goa as early as the second minute with Nasser Al Rawahi forcing defender Pol Moreno into an acrobatic clearance, while Zahir Al Aghbari's follow-up from inside the box was blocked. The home side took time to settle and could have broken the deadlock in the ninth minute when Drazic broke free on the left, but with only the keeper to beat, the midfielder's soft shot was easily collected by Ahmed Al Rawahi. Al Rawahi was in the thick of things again for Al Seeb in the 23rd minute when his timely tackle opened up space to set up Abdul Aziz Al Muqbali, whose curling effort was parried away by FC Goa keeper Hrithik Tiwari. However, FC Goa showed their quality a minute later when Borja Herrera's instinctive long pass found Dražić on the left, with the midfielder evading Al Rawahi's challenge before delicately chipping the ball over Ahmed Al Khamisi and into the back of the net. The Indian Super League side stayed on top of things in the second half with Drazic out muscling the Al Seeb defenders to surge into the box before forcing Al Rawahi to palm away his stinging shot in the 52nd minute. The momentum saw FC Goa extend their lead moments later when Herrera's cross off a corner floated into the box perfectly for Siverio to rise above Al Rawahi for a headed finish. Al Seeb, the 2022 AFC Cup winners, reduced the deficit at the hour mark through Nasser Al Rawahi's strike from close range off Ali Al Busaidi's cutback, but that was to be it as FC Goa became the second Indian side to book their spot in this season's Group Stage after 2024-25 ISL Shield Winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant. The Gaurs and the Mariners will discover their Group Stage opponents after the draw on August 15. UNI BM
