'Shallow Hal' Actor Rene Kirby Dead At 70
It's been shared via Variety that Kirby passed away on July 11 in Burlington, Vermont. The outlet, as shared by Kirby's brother Jon with Seven Days, added 'that Kirby had died at the University of Vermont Medical Center.'
The outlet adds that Kirby was dealing with a number of health issues prior to his death:
'Kirby was hospitalized for two months with kidney, bladder and esophagus issues, as well as multiple infections. Kirby had previously survived throat cancer, but lost the ability to speak after the removal of his larynx.'
Kirby had a number of health issues prior to this time, however, including spina bifida which Variety notes 'causes scoliosis, leg paralysis, and difficulty walking.' After his appearance in Shallow Hal , Kirby appeared in 2003's Stuck on You and an episode of the TV series Carnivàle .
Rene Kirby has might not have had a large acting career, but the few roles he did play were quite memorable and have stuck in the minds of viewers for decades. While it's unfortunate that he had to suffer through so many health issues, at the very least fans will remember him for his work.
It all started when Me, Myself and Irene director Peter Farelly spotted Kirby while shooting the film in 1999. After meeting Kirby, Farelly decided he would be perfect to play Walt in the movie Shallow Hal which starred Gwyneth Paltrow and Jack Black. The other movie that Kirby appeared in, Stuck on You , was another picture made by the Farrelly brothers. Carnivàle , on the other hand, was a TV series which saw Kirby play the character Hoppy for one episode.
Kirby is survived by his mother as well as six siblings.

Splash pad in Davis that honors fallen police officer Natalie Corona opens
A splash pad is officially open, honoring fallen Davis police officer Natalie Corona six years after she was killed in the line of duty while responding to a crash in 2019. "She had a joyful spirit, that is the vibe and the energy that we see here today," said Deanne Machado, the parks director for the City of Davis. "So it is a perfect match to honor who she was and her spirit." The project was five years in the making. More than half a million dollars raised through community support brought the project to life. Local artists added personal touches in tilework as each piece was designed with the help of the people who knew Corona best. "There are so many easter egg moments in the tiles that represent stories that her friends, family, and the community know about," Machado said. Corona's best friend, Mariah Diaz, said when the water started flowing, memories flooded her mind. "It felt like that was me and her right there," Diaz said. "It was all meant to be. I truly feel her spirit here with us, she's looking down on us and has the biggest smile on her face." Her friends and colleagues at the Davis Police Department see the splash pad as a fitting tribute to the young officer who wanted to serve this community. "The closure of this project is sort of a symbolic closure of a really big chapter, too, but a joyful one," Machado said. The splash pad, located in Central Park in Davis, is free and will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily during the summer.

Greg Iles, Mississippi author of ‘Natchez Burning' trilogy, dies of cancer at 65
Greg Iles, the Mississippi author of the 'Natchez Burning' trilogy and other works, has died. He was 65. Iles died Friday after a decades-long battle with the blood cancer multiple myeloma, his literary agent Dan Conaway posted Saturday on Facebook. Initially diagnosed with the incurable condition in 1996, he kept his illness private until completing his final novel, 'Southern Man,' which was published in 2024. Iles was born in Germany but moved to Natchez, Mississippi, with his family when he was just three years old and developed a deep connection with the region. Many of his stories are set in Mississippi, including the 'Natchez Burning' trilogy, historical fiction suspense novels exploring race and class in the 1960s Jim Crow South. Conaway described Iles as 'warm, funny, fearless, and completely sui generis.' 'To be on the other end of the phone as he talked through character and plot, problem-solving on the fly, was to be witness to genius at work, plain and simple,' he wrote on Saturday. 'As a writer he fused story-craft, bone-deep humanity, and a growing sense of moral and political responsibility with the ferocious precisions of a whirling dervish or a master watchmaker.' In March 2011, Iles suffered a ruptured aorta and a partial leg amputation and spent eight days in a medically induced coma after another driver struck his car on Highway 61 near Natchez. He eventually recovered. Iles performed with the musical group The Rock Bottom Remainders along with popular authors Stephen King, Amy Tan and others.
