How are England placed for next Women's World Cup?
Which Lionesses might retire?
Lucy Bronze, by far the most experienced member of the England squad, is also the oldest and by the time the World Cup comes around she will be 35.Yet the World Cup is the one major piece of silverware missing from her extensive collection of medals for club and country and after winning their first European title she said "there's still one more we can get our hands on". That is still unfinished business. Bronze has previously spoken about not retiring "unless my body gives up on me" and has shown little sign of her age affecting her availability. Having been involved in 19 of Chelsea's 22 Women's Super League (WSL) games during their title win last season, Bronze then started every England game at Euro 2025, where she was named in Uefa's team of the tournament. However, she did reveal after the final that she had been playing in Switzerland with a fractured leg, while she also suffered a knee injury against Spain - and injuries could become more of an issue.Other players involved in the current squad who would be over 30 in Brazil are Alex Greenwood, who is currently 31, Beth Mead, 30, and uncapped goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse, also 30.Another player who was not involved in Switzerland and faces an uncertain England future is Millie Bright, who turns 32 next month, and her retirement would not be a surprise. She made herself unavailable at Euro 2025, saying she was not able to give 100% mentally or physically, and while still valued highly by Wiegman, two of her past three seasons have been heavily disrupted by injuries.
Who might break into starting line-up?
It is impossible not to highlight teenage striker Michelle Agyemang, who has made such a big impression in a small amount of time. The 19-year-old may only have five caps for England, making her debut in April, but she has already scored three memorable goals and played a pivotal role in England retaining their European title. If she continues on her current trajectory she will be pushing Alessia Russo for a starting spot - although may have to displace her at club level first, with both playing for Arsenal. Wiegman could also consider playing them together.Another of England's most exciting young talents is Grace Clinton, who has long been tipped to become a regular starter for her country following her impressive displays at club level. The 22-year-old Manchester United midfielder was given a starting role in the absence of the injured Georgia Stanway earlier this year, while Wiegman showed how much she trusted Clinton at Euro 2025 by using her as a substitute in all except the game against Wales, bringing her on in every knockout match when results were in the balance.Wiegman has been loyal to Keira Walsh and Stanway in midfield but they did not have as great an impact in Switzerland as at previous tournaments and Clinton could be the one to break up the partnership.Like Agyemang and Clinton, highly rated striker Aggie Beever-Jones, midfielder Jess Park and defender Maya le Tissier were also at their first major tournament. With two years' more experience come the World Cup in Brazil, they might be handed much greater roles.Manchester United captain Le Tissier, 23, has often been overlooked by Wiegman but continues to impress at club level, and it is in defence where England might make the biggest changes having not fully convinced in Switzerland where they conceded seven goals in six matches. While captain Leah Williamson and Bronze have been permanent fixtures in defence, the other centre-back role and left-back have been problem positions, and the manager will hope first-choice candidates emerge to create a consistent back four.At this summer's Euros Wiegman blended youth with experience, but there is plenty to be done over the next two years to develop some of those young players into starters at international tournaments.Other defenders who might push the current regulars include Washington Spirit's Esme Morgan, 24, who made one start at Euro 2025, while Aston Villa's Lucy Parker, 26, and Tottenham's Ella Morris, 22, are both uncapped but had England call-ups in the past year.
Who will be England's main rivals?
It is hard to look further than the United States and Spain. The USA team are now managed by Englishwoman Emma Hayes, who has restored them to the top of the world rankings after they dropped to fifth following their worst performance at a Women's World Cup in 2023, when they went out in the last 16.Prior to that they had won the previous two World Cups. They bounced back from their disappointment in Australia by winning the Olympics in Paris last summer, just three months after the former Chelsea boss took charge, and will no doubt be among the favourites to lift the trophy in Brazil.Spain, meanwhile, are the World Cup holders and came agonisingly close to adding the European title with their defeat on penalties by England at Euro 2025.In Switzerland they showed that at their best it is difficult for any team to live with them, while they continue to churn out world-class players with the performances of Barcelona midfielder Vicky Lopez, who has just turned 19, suggesting she will be one to watch in Brazil.Conditions might also play a factor, with the American and Spanish players more accustomed to playing in hot weather than the Lionesses, whose players are mostly based in England. Yet when the men's World Cup was held in Brazil in 2014, Germany's triumph showed that a northern European team could still thrive in unfamiliar conditions. One team who would be expected to flourish in that climate would be hosts Brazil, who will also have the added boost of home support. They had a disappointing tournament two years ago, failing to make it past the group stage as Jamaica finished ahead of them. But just 12 months later they were impressive at the Paris Olympics, knocking out hosts France and Spain on their way to the final, and where better to end their search for a first international title than on home soil? When it comes to major tournaments it is also hard not to mention two-time champions Germany, while perennial underachievers France and former winners Japan are capable of competing with the world's best.

Chelsea urged to sign 'inspirational' £40m Man Utd transfer target this summer
Former Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit has urged his old club to sign Manchester United transfer target Emiliano Martinez this summer. The Red Devils saw a loan bid rejected by Aston Villa last month – but the 32-year-old goalkeeper is thought to be available for around £40m. Robert Sanchez, who currently operates as Chelsea's No.1 goalkeeper, faced plenty of criticism for a number of his performances last season. Martinez, a World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022, would arguably take Chelsea to the next level – and help them challenge for the top-flight title. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. 'Emiliano Martinez would be an inspiration in the Chelsea dressing room,' Petit told ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. 'I have criticised his behaviour in the past but he knows what it takes to win titles, he has that experience. 'He can inspire other players and he has all the qualities needed of a top goalkeeper. 'He would be a very good signing for Chelsea and 32 isn't old for a goalkeeper. 'I think he'd link well with Enzo Maresca and the players already at the club. 'One fear I have is for Aston Villa, I am worried about them with top players leaving the club, I'm not sure where it will leave them next season.' It is believed that Martinez rebuffed the chance to move to the lucrative Saudi Pro League earlier this summer. Martinez has shined in the Premier League since he moved to Villa Park from Arsenal for £20m five years ago, making 212 appearances to date. More Trending The Argentine was named The Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper in both 2022 and 2024. But William Gallas believes Chelsea would be wise to avoid a move for Martinez in the summer window, which remains open until September 1. 'I have some serious doubts about whether he would be a good fit for Chelsea,' Gallas told Prime Casino. 'I don't know if he's got the right profile to be the goalkeeper of Chelsea. When I think about his antics, I just don't think he would be a positive addition to the club.' Hibs sporting director Malky Mackay revealed that the Easter Road club had triggered Lewis Miller's contract extension at the end of last season in order to cash in on interest in the Socceroos star. And the move has paid off – with Blackburn agreeing to a compensation package worth up to £1.5 million for the 24-year-old. Hibs confirmed this evening that Miller's transfer to the EFL Championship side had gone through. It is understood that the overall compensation package, including extremely achievable add-ons, will total £1.5 million if all targets are hit. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Mackay revealed that Hibs had rejected lesser bids earlier this summer, saying: 'We triggered Lewis Miller's contract extension back in April, knowing there was a lot of interest in him from the UK and abroad. It's been widely reported that we rejected bids for him earlier in the window and have worked hard to get a fee that reflects his true value I'd like to thank Lewis for all his efforts during his time with us and wish him all the best for the future.' David Gray says fullback will 'go a long way' Head coach David Gray backed Miller to go far in the English game, saying: 'I'd like to start by thanking Millsy for all his efforts during his time with us. Since making the move to Scotland, he's been coachable, willing to learn, and has relentlessly worked on his game. 'He's certainly seen the rewards for that both at club level and internationally. We know he can go a long way and wish him all the best in England with Blackburn.' In an official statement just released by Hibs, the club revealed: 'We can confirm that Lewis Miller has joined Blackburn Rovers on a permanent transfer. The terms of the 24-year-old's transfer will remain undisclosed, however, the club has received a significant fee. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Miller joined Hibs in the summer of 2022 and went on to make 85 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals. The defender made a significant contribution during the 2024/25 campaign as Hibs finished third in the William Hill Premiership, securing European football. 'During his time in Edinburgh, he went from strength-to-strength earning his first senior caps for Australia's National Team and representing his country in major international tournaments.' Gray is now in the market for a defender to replace Miller. Although Hibs have plenty of cover at right back and wingback, Miller's shifts on the right side of a back three will be missed. Scotland defender Grant Hanley is still weighing up his options, having visited Easter Road as a guest of former team-mate David Marshall - now Mackay's right-hand man - for last week's Europa League defeat to Midtjylland. Hibs remain interested in adding the 33-year-old former Newcastle, Norwich and Blackburn centre-half, now a free agent, to their squad. Miller spoke to The Evening News during Hibernian's pre-season trip to Holland, opening up on his World Cup dreams and admitting that the Easter Road club had 'made' him as a footballer.

Hearts vs Aberdeen LIVE score and goal updates from the Premiership clash at Tynecastle
It's a Monday night blockbuster in the capital as Hearts and Aberdeen go head to head. The country may well be getting battered by Storm Floris but it is GAME ON in Gorgie as the opening weekend comes to a close. Derek McInnes has adjusted to life in the Tynecastle dugout and sailed through the Premier Sports Cup group stage with a 100 per cent record while Jimmy Thelin's men return to competitive action for the first time tonight. They avoided the opening part of the competition due to European involvement with the Dons discovering that it is FCSB or Drita that stand between them and Europa League football. Defeat and it is Conference League once again for the Reds. But the focus is on the here and now for both teams as they look to get off to a flier in the new league campaign. 17:36Alan Galindo Magnusson boosts Hearts ranks Hearts gave fans a pre-Premiership return boost with another new signing. Tomas Bent Magnusson has arrived from Valur and put pen to paper on a three-year deal. The centre-midfielder is one Derek McInnes hopes will bring a real presence to his side. I'm pleased we've been able to bring Tomas in ahead of tonight's game. He'll bring a presence to the middle of the park with his height and athleticism, and he's a very dynamic player in that he can both defend and attack. I'm looking forward to working with him in the weeks and months ahead. 16:44Alan Galindo 'We've got a lot to do to make up for last season' - Derek McInnes Derek McInnes insists Hearts have a lot to do to make up for last season. The capital club missed out on European football, failed to reach a cup final and finished in the bottom half in a miserable campaign. But it is a fresh start tonight and the new boss hopes to have his team in the European mixer once again and fighting to reach Hampden. Obviously, we've got to improve clearly on what we served up last season. As a club, we never really got what we wanted. There was obviously the extra demand of European football, but domestically, not to get to the Cup final and not even get top six. We've got a lot to do to make up for last season. We'd like to think that we can be searching and striving for European football in amongst those places and try to get to Hampden. I don't think any Hearts player or any Hearts manager or staff should shy away from that demand. It's clearly there. We accept it and we've got to go and set about the task of doing that. We're not here to mess about. We're here to try and do something while we're here. I do feel that a Hearts player, when they sign here, should have those objectives. I think it's clearly what the Hearts fans expect. As I said when I got announced as a manager, all we've got to try and do, first and foremost, is meet the expectations of the Hearts fans. I would say that their expectations is what we expect from ourselves. Beyond that, going forward, hopefully we can exceed those expectations. For now, we're not going to shout our mouths off. We're going to do this and we're going to do that. In the back of last season, we never reached a final and we were in the bottom six. There's work to be done. We're encouraged by what the players have given us since they've come in. It's not just about new signings and this new wave of new players. Any new player coming in has got a part to play. Equally, the players who were here last season, the players who have been here for a while, have got a huge part to play as well. It's those players that we feel we're really pleased with, that we're getting good performances out of as well. It's a collective effort to try and meet that demand. 16:41Alan Galindo Thelin ready for Hearts Jimmy Thelin insists Aberdeen are ready for the Premiership opener. The Scottish Cup winners return to competitive action tonight at Tynecastle. He insists his troops are ready for the first game of the season as they come up against a familiar face in Derek McInnes. When you have a pre-season, you have to be ready. You are as good as you are when you start the season, and then hopefully you can always develop and grow during the season. But we are ready for an exciting first league game now, away against Hearts and to play in front of our away support, the atmosphere, a competitive game. There is a lot of positive things to look forward to. Of course we feel ready for this game.
