Houston Astros closer Josh Hader had never been seriously injured before as a big-leaguer. Now, he's out indefinitely at the worst possible time.
Hader last pitched last Friday, in a two-inning, 36-pitch outing against the New York Yankees. His throwing shoulder was bugging him, he was unavailable for the rest of the weekend, and he wound up being placed on the injured list on Tuesday.
It's Hader's first-ever trip to the IL, save for a bout of COVID in 2021, and it leaves the Astros without their six-time All-Star. It's especially notable that the injury came after a multi-inning outing, which Hader famously refused to do before he got his second contract.

(Photo by)Now, Hader's prognosis is a bit more clear, and it appears he'll be frantically working against the clock to have any hope of returning during the regular season.
On Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reported that Hader has what the Astros termed a "left shoulder capsule strain." He will not throw for approximately three weeks, and then next steps will be determined.
If we assume it's three weeks on the dot, that means Hader won't throw a baseball until the first week of September. Optimistically, that would put his likely return sometime in mid-to-late September even with an accelerated rehab.
Hader has a 2.05 ERA in 52 2/3 outings this season, striking out 76 and racking up 28 saves. He is in the second season of a five-year, $95 million contract.
The Astros are fortunate to have a second closer-worthy reliever in Bryan Abreu, but there's no doubt Hader is a huge loss. It's not just Abreu who will have to step up, of course; anyone in a medium-leverage role will likely have to take on high-leverage innings now.
In the meantime, the best thing Hader can do for now is rest, and he and the Astros have to hope the shoulder heals itself quickly.

Phillies' Ace Zack Wheeler Has Surgery to Remove Blood Clot in Right Arm

Major League Baseball Phillies' Ace Zack Wheeler Has Surgery to Remove Blood Clot in Right Arm Updated Aug. 18, 2025 4:56 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Phillies ace Zack Wheeler had surgery Monday to remove a blood clot in his upper right arm, and the team says a timeline for his recovery remains uncertain. The Phillies said Wheeler underwent a thrombolysis procedure by Dr. Paul DiMuzio at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The 35-year-old Wheeler was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a blood clot after experiencing worsening shoulder soreness. Wheeler, who made his third All-Star team last month, is 10-5 with a 2.71 ERA in 24 starts this season. He has a major league-high 195 strikeouts in 149.2 innings. He has thrown at least 192 innings in three of the previous four seasons. The veteran right-hander looked like he was in the running for his first career Cy Young as the Phillies' ace, while they attempted to win the NL East crown and make it to the postseason for the fourth consecutive season. The strength of their rotation, which includes Wheeler as well as Cristopher Sanchez, Ranger Suarez and Taijuan Walker, have helped compensate for a lacking bullpen. Now, with Wheeler out indefinitely, it becomes even more important for Aaron Nola – who recently returned from the IL himself when he pitched on Aug. 17 against the Nationals – to perform more like he did even last year, and before 2025's injury troubles. The Phillies are in first place in the NL East, five games up on the New York Mets and tied for the second-most wins in the NL behind the Brewers. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Tigers activate Alex Lange from injured list; Bailey Horn optioned to Triple-A Toledo

Detroit Tigers right-handed reliever Alex Lange is known for wearing a turtleneck underneath his jersey during games. "It's back," he said. The Tigers activated Lange from the injured list Monday, Aug. 18, before the opener of a three-game series against the Houston Astros at Comerica Park. To open a roster spot, the Tigers optioned left-handed reliever Bailey Horn to Triple-A Toledo. Lange hasn't pitched for the Tigers since May 22, 2024. "I'm excited to be back here and in the locker room again," Lange said before Monday's game. "It felt like Christmas morning waking up. Being able to come here and put a jersey on tonight, it's pretty cool." POSITIVE VIBES: Tigers reliever Alex Lange motivated by 'World Series rings' The 29-year-old has spent the past 14 months recovering surgery to repair an avulsion in his right latissimus dorsi tendon, which he underwent in late June 2024. When healthy, Lange racked up 26 saves in 32 opportunities as the Tigers' closer in 2023, posting a 3.68 ERA with 45 walks and 79 strikeouts across 66 innings in 67 games. Everything went downhill in 2024. Before the lat injury, Lange registered a 4.34 ERA with two saves in two opportunities in 2024, responsible for 17 walks compared to 21 strikeouts over 18⅔ innings in 21 games. The Tigers optioned Lange to Triple-A Toledo for performance reasons in May 2024, then he suffered the injury with the Mud Hens in June 2024. SUNDAY'S ROSTER MOVE: Tigers recall Brenan Hanifee after minimum stay in Triple-A; Brant Hurter sent down Although the Tigers activated Lange from the 60-day injured list, a 40-man roster move wasn't required because it was at 39 players.
