Rajasthan-Gujarat civil defence drill under Operation Shield postponed; Haryana to go ahead with mock drill on May 29

Time of India28-05-2025
The civil defence exercise scheduled for May 29 in Rajasthan and Gujarat has been postponed due to administrative reasons. This was announced through official statements from the Rajasthan State Home Department and the Gujarat Information Department. The new dates for the postponed exercise will be announced later.
Operation Shield continues elsewhere
The civil defence drill was part of 'Operation Shield,' a nationwide exercise planned by the Directorate General of Fire Service and Home Guards. The exercise was initially set to take place in states bordering Pakistan, including Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. This was to be the second such drill following 'Operation Sindoor,' which took place across the country on May 7.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the first round of exercises revealed critical gaps in emergency preparedness in some vulnerable areas, prompting the continued push for state-level drills under the new operation.
Haryana to conduct statewide Mock Drill
While Rajasthan and Gujarat have postponed their activities, Haryana has confirmed it will carry out its civil defence exercise under Operation Shield on Thursday. The drill will be held from 5 PM to 9 PM across all 22 districts.
Key features of the drill include emergency response activities simulating aerial threats like air raids and drone swarms. Air raid sirens will be activated, and communication hotlines with the Indian Air Force will be tested. A 15-minute controlled blackout will be observed from 8 PM onwards near critical infrastructure, excluding emergency services such as hospitals, police stations, and fire stations.
Previous exercise highlighted preparedness gaps
The Ministry of Home Affairs stated that the earlier civil defence exercise, Operation Sindoor, helped in identifying weaknesses in the emergency response setup across multiple states. The continued efforts under Operation Shield aim to improve coordination between local and central agencies and test readiness in real-time scenarios.

Row erupts as KBC hosts officers Sofiya, Vyomika

New Delhi: The appearance of three army personnel associated with Operation Sindoor in the latest promo of quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati has sparked a debate, with many criticising the development as a 'PR stunt' by the ruling government to 'milk votes'. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi (Indian Army) and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh (Indian Air Force) — the two officers who addressed briefings during Operation Sindoor — are set to appear in the Independence Day episode of the Amitabh Bachchan-hosted show along with Commander Prerna Deosthalee (Indian Navy), as per the promo. 'This can't be allowed. It is against the Constitution and military ethos,' said ex-army officer Praveen Dawar. 'This is just unbelievable. Operation Sindoor heroes appearing on national TV show KBC Just because one 'nationalist' party wants to milk some votes?' a social media user posted on X. 'Our Army was sacrosanct, above politics, beyond PR. Today, Modi govt parades serving soldiers on shows like KBC for image building. Even our Army has been made a political tool for Modi's PR. Our forces are to defend the nation, not a politician's brand,' wrote an X user, peeved at the development. Some social media users have also questioned if such TV appearances of army personnel in uniform were in accordance with the protocol of the Indian Army. 'The officers concerned could have declined to be paraded in uniform in such a manner. They didn't. The matter ends there. Rest is your politics,' said retired Indian Air Force pilot Vijainder K Thakur, a military analyst.

How many Pakistani jets India shot down in Op Sindoor? IAF confirmed 5, experts say 'evidence' of more

International military aviation analyst and historian Tom Cooper backed Indian Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh's recent assertion that India shot down five Pakistani air force jets during Operation Sindoor. While Pakistan continues to deny the claims, Tom Cooper, a renowned Austria-based aerial warfare expert, has said that what ACM Singh noted was just a 'confirmation of something that was more or less known since May'. Earlier this week, Singh maintained that India's S-400 systems struck at least five Pakistani jets and one big airborne early warning aircraft. Pakistan denied Singh's claim. However, during an interview with ANI, Cooper noted that Indian firepower remained dominated during the four-day military escalation between India and Pakistan. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We have seen evidence of not only five but even more Pakistani aircraft being shot down. We have also seen evidence for even more Pakistani aircraft being destroyed on the ground. But there was no official confirmation from the IAF, not even from the government of India. Therefore, this is a nice confirmation for something that was assessed already back in May,' Cooper said in an interview with ANI. A world record was made Cooper identified the Pakistani early warning and control aircraft as a Saab 2000. The Austrian aviation expert went on to endorse Singh's claim that the successful strike from a range of 300 km was a world record. 'It is the longest range confirmed shoot-down by a surface-to-air missile. This is a historic achievement,' he said, lauding the extraordinary feat of the IAF, mentioning that the other instance of such an attack was recorded in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, where the weapon system was shot down at a distance of 200 km. 'This is a significant fact because we have seen IAF deploying its S-400 surface-to-air missile system very close to the border to Pakistan, so close that it was actually firing missiles from within the range of Pakistani army's artillery, which meant if it would stay, its presence of the firing unit in question would have been detected by Pakistanis too early, Pakistanis could have shelled the area in question, hit and destroyed this firing unit. So it was quite a risky operation, actually,' he told ANI. It is pertinent to note that Tom Cooper is not the only expert to endorse Singh's assessment. Earlier, well-known military strategist John Spencer maintained that Operation Sindoor marked India's decisive victory. With inputs from ANI.

Spread awareness on Operation Sindoor during Ganesh festival: Fadnavis

Fadnavis instructed the administration to take measures to ensure that devotees face no inconvenience during the festival, beginning August 27. Fadnavis chaired a review meeting, attended by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, his cabinet colleagues Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Pankaj Bhoyar and Yogesh Kadam, and Chief Secretary Rajesh Kumar. Mumbai, Aug 13 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday urged Ganesh mandals to spread awareness on Operation Sindoor and swadeshi during the upcoming festival. 'He also expressed the expectation that tableaux based on Operation Sindoor be dedicated to the soldiers,' an official statement said. The chief minister instructed the grant of continuous five-year permissions to idol makers, similar to public Ganesh mandals. He said idol makers should renew these permits every year. They should also take advantage of the computerised single-window system introduced by the municipal corporation for permission applications. The CM directed that the number of artificial ponds for immersing idols and boats used for deep sea immersions be increased. In view of the state festival status accorded to Ganesh festival, extensive planning has been undertaken to celebrate it on a large scale. All concessions given to Ganesh mandals last year will be continued this year as well. Fadnavis said the law should be followed while celebrating the festival. As Eid-e-Milad also falls during the Ganesh festival period, care should be taken to maintain religious harmony and ensure that law and order are not disturbed. He said the state government will take positive steps, within the limits set by the court, to extend the number of days for which permission is granted to use loudspeakers during the festival. It was decided not to levy property tax on the offices of Ganesh mandals if they give written declarations that these places are not used for commercial purposes.
