Police killings set record in 2024, but with smallest increase in years: Report
The number of people killed by police in the U.S. reached a new record in 2024, but the increase wasn't as dramatic as it has been in recent years, according to an analysis released Tuesday.
The Mapping Police Violence found that at least 1,365 people were killed by law enforcement last year — a slight uptick from the 1,329 civilians who died at the hands of police in 2023. The project from police reform advocacy group Campaign Zero has been tracking police killings in the country since 2013.
May 2024 was recorded as the second deadliest month since the group began tracking the killings, with 136 killed by officers. That number follows closely behind August 2023, which had a record 137 deaths.
In August 2024, the fifth deadliest month, about 125 people were killed by law enforcement, according to the report.
The number of annual deaths attributed to police officers has climbed steadily since 2020 — the same year a Minneapolis police officer murdered George Floyd, fueling Black Lives Matter protests and other demonstrations around the country.
The per capita increase from 2023 to 2024 was less than half a percent, while the per capita number jumped 6.5 percent from 2022 to 2023.
The project counts as police killings any 'incident where a law enforcement officer (off-duty or on-duty) applies, on a civilian, lethal force resulting in the civilian being killed whether it is considered 'justified' or 'unjustified' by the U.S. Criminal Legal System.'
The annual report also found that Black people are nearly three times as likely than white people to be killed at the hands of police in 2024.
There is no formal government tracking of officer-involved deaths nationally.
The Mapping Police Violence report is compiled from media reports and thousands of hours of research from the project's analysts.

Davenport driver arrested after police find wrecked car, cocaine and cash: Court records
A 50-year-old Davenport man was in custody Saturday after Davenport Police say he drove the wrong way on a one-way and wrecked his car, according to Scott County arrest affidavits. Diondre Wakefield faces felony charges of controlled-substance violation and failure to affix a drug stamp, along with a serious misdemeanor charge of eluding, according to Scott County Court documents. About 11:53 p.m. Friday, Davenport Police saw Wakefield driving a white Dodge Charger in the area of the 400 block of Gaines Street, affidavits show. Officers knew Wakefield had several warrants for his arrest including local from Davenport Police and interstate from Rock Island County, according to affidavits. Police identified Wakefield as the driver. Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens to initiate a stop, but Wakefield 'immediately turned the wrong way on a one-way road and willfully failed to stop, fleeing at a high rate of speed,' police say in affidavits. Police relocated the Charger shortly afterward. The car had wrecked in the 800 block of Marquette Street and it was unoccupied. A K9 was on the scene and tracked southeast from the car. Officers gave Wakefield commands to surrender, but he remained hidden and refused to comply, affidavits say. During the track, police found a clear plastic bag containing 13.1 grams of cocaine discarded in a back yard, along with $42 cash. There was no tax stamp affixed to this, according to affidavits. The track continued south. Police found Wakefield about two houses south of where the narcotics and money were located. He had $755 cash. 'The large amount of the suspected crack cocaine along with the large amount of cash indicate (Wakefield) to be selling the crack cocaine,' police say in arrest affidavits. Police search for driver after man critically injured in Loop hit-and-run while chasing dog
CHICAGO — Police are searching for a driver who allegedly fled the scene after crashing into a man who was chasing his dog in the Loop on Friday night. Chicago police say a search is underway for the driver of a white sedan who crashed into a man in the 100 block of South Michigan Avenue, in the Loop, just after 9:30 p.m. Friday. Following the crash, officers said the driver involved allegedly did not stop and continued driving. The victim suffered a head injury in the crash and was later hospitalized in critical condition. Person killed in DUI-related crash in central Las Vegas valley
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A person was hit and killed early Saturday morning in a DUI-related crash in the central Las Vegas valley, according to Metro police. The crash happened around 2 a.m. near Redwood Street, just north of West Flamingo Road. Police said the victim was lying in the roadway when a 2008 Infiniti G35 turned onto Redwood Street from Flamingo and hit him. The driver remained on scene and was later arrested for DUI-related charges. Emergency medical responders took the victim to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead.
