Afternoon Briefing: Neko Case recalls formative years in Chicago in memoir
Good afternoon, Chicago.
A packed Thornton Township meeting that started in high spirits devolved into a brawl after residents got up to speak.
Chaos erupted during the public comment period last night after community activist Jedidiah Brown called Supervisor Tiffany Henyard an expletive.
Following his comments, Brown was seen walking toward the table where Henyard and other township officials were seated before he spun around toward the back of the building where the fight broke out.

Madigan 'was not confused' taking part in alleged bribery scheme, prosecutor says
Early in their final pitch to jurors today, prosecutors displayed a screenshot from an undercover video: Michael Madigan, then the powerful speaker of the Illinois House, leaning forward with his hand out. That image, secretly recorded by alderman-turned-FBI mole Daniel Solis, is surely the portrait of Madigan that prosecutors hope jurors will take back with them to deliberations — a politician laser-focused on what he could get for himself. Column: Chicago Cubs couldn't compete with Los Angeles Dodgers in offseason. Will it be different on the field?
While the Cubs' 26-man payroll rose to $176 million with the Ryan Pressly acquisition, according to Spotrac, that's still $112 million under the Dodgers. The Dodgers are one of four teams with a current payroll of $256 million or more. Read more here.

LA Dodgers at San Diego Padres odds, picks and predictions
LA Dodgers at San Diego Padres odds, picks and predictions The LA Dodgers (40-27) and the San Diego Padres (37-28) play the middle contest of a 3-game series at Petco Park in San Diego Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Dodgers vs. Padres odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets. Season series: Dodgers lead 1-0 The Dodgers picked up a wild 8-7 victory in 10 innings in Monday's series opener at Petco Park, cashing as -121 favorites with the Over (8) hitting in the third inning. Neither of the starting pitchers had much to offer as Dodgers RHP Dustin May was trampled for 6 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits and 4 walks in just 5 innings, while Padres RHP Nick Pivetta was shelled for 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings. It was a game for the offenses. Dodgers 1B Freddie Freeman went 3-for-5 with a double, 2 runs and an RBI, C Will Smith (1-for-4) had a 2-run HR and 3 RBIs, and OF Andy Pages (2-for-5, RBI) and 2B Tommy Edman (2-for-5, RBI) each knocked in runs in LA's go-ahead 10th inning. Padres LF Tyler Wade (1-for-1) turned a 2-run deficit into a 6-5 lead with a 3-run triple in the bottom of the third, while 3B Manny Machado stayed hot with a 2-for-5 performance with an RBI double. CF Jackson Merrill finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. The Dodgers have won 2 in a row, re-discovering their offense. After scoring just 1 run in the first 2 games of their weekend series at St. Louis, they've cobbled together 15 runs in the past 2 games, helping the Over cash in both outings. The Padres' 7 runs were the most they've scored in their last 11 games. However, the 8 runs allowed are also the most the pitching staff had surrendered in the last 11 games. Monday's Over snapped a 4-game Under run for San Diego. Dodgers at Padres projected starters TBD vs. RHP Dylan Cease The Dodgers haven't announced a starter at the time of this publishing. Cease (1-5, 4.72 ERA) makes his 14th start. He has a 1.31 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9 and 11.1 K/9 in 68 2/3 innings. Last start: Loss, 5 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 7 K in 3-2 setback at San Francisco Giants Thursday 2025 home stats: 1-2, 3.66 ERA (32 IP, 13 ER), 5 HR, 1.34 WHIP, 11.8 K/9 in 6 starts 2024 vs. Dodgers (regular season): 1-0, 3.38 ERA (10 2/3 IP, 4 ER), 6 BB, 10 K in 2 starts Career vs. Dodgers (regular season): 1-1, 2.61 ERA (20 2/3 IP, 6 ER), 1.45 WHIP, 12.2 K/9 in 4 starts Win your fantasy baseball league with For decades, BHQ has been helping players just like you win! Moneyline (ML) : Dodgers +100 (bet $100 to win $100) | Padres -120 (bet $120 to win $100) : Dodgers +100 (bet $100 to win $100) | Padres -120 (bet $120 to win $100) Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS) : Dodgers -1.5 (+165) | Padres +1.5 (-200) : Dodgers -1.5 (+165) | Padres +1.5 (-200) Over/Under (O/U): 8.5 (O: +100 | U: -120) Dodgers at Padres picks and predictions Prediction Dodgers 5, Padres 4 The DODGERS (+100) are worth a look at even-money at home. I just don't trust Cease, who is 1-5 this season ... and that win was against a Cleveland Guardians team he knows well from his days with the Chicago White Sox. Plus, that lone victory came way back on April 2 in his second start of the season. While Los Angeles is having a bullpen day, it has a respectable relief corps with a 3.88 ERA, according to The Padres +1.5 (-200) will cost 2 times the potential return. That's too much risk just for a little bit of insurance. It might make you feel better to side with the home team since it named a projected starting pitcher, while there is uncertainty with who will lead off on the mound for the visitors. But, Cease is anything but a sure-fire option. AVOID. OVER 8 (+100) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at best. We had an unexpected Over result in the series opener. In fact, it was an old-fashioned slugfest at Petco Park, a venue which usually doesn't see a ton of shootouts -- the Under is 18-12-1 there this season. With a bullpen game for LA, and a so-so Cease on the other side, we could get some big production, especially early on. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! Dodgers Trade Idea Replaces Struggling Outfielder With Adolis Garcia
Dodgers Trade Idea Replaces Struggling Outfielder With Adolis Garcia originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Michael Conforto over the offseason, they were gambling on an inexpensive, oft-injured outfielder who hit 20 home runs last season with the San Francisco Giants. To their credit, Conforto is still healthy. Unfortunately, he has slumped to the tune of a .170 batting average with three home runs. Advertisement Conforto's season has been far from ideal for a postseason-bound team like the Dodgers. Given his struggles, sports writer Dylan Sanders suggested replacing him with a one-time postseason legend. In his proposal, Sanders suggests the Dodgers should target Texas Rangers' slugger and Gold Glove winner Adolis Garcia. 'If the Rangers do end up selling, Adolis Garcia is someone that should absolutely be moved if they can get at least a prospect of note in return,' Sanders writes. 'A potential deal that would be worth doing would be with the Los Angeles Dodgers. They have a need in the outfield and a surprisingly solid farm system for how loaded their Major League roster is.' Texas Rangers first baseman Jake Burger (21) celebrates with Texas Rangers left fielder Wyatt Langford (36) and Texas Rangers right fielder Adolis Garcia (53) after hitting a three-run home run during the first inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Globe Life Jairaj-Imagn Images This season, Garcia has slumped, hitting .215/.259/.364 with seven home runs. Even so, his numbers still trounce Conforto's. The main allure here is Garcia's power, which helped him hit 25+ home runs a year for the past five years, topping out at 39. Could the Dodgers get him going? Sanders suggests that it might not be such a complicated task. Advertisement 'Whenever he makes contact, he can still do damage,' Sanders continues. 'He has one of the highest average exit velocities in the sport and should be better than he has been. His aggressiveness at the plate has just caught up to his as his bat-to-ball skills drop.' Garcia was incomparable in his only postseason run. In the 2023 playoffs, he hit .323 with eight home runs, winning the ALCS MVP award and leading the Rangers to the World Series before falling injured in the match against the Arizona Diamondbacks. If he thrives in the spotlight, he can thrive with the Dodgers.
