LA Dodgers at San Diego Padres odds, picks and predictions
The LA Dodgers (40-27) and the San Diego Padres (37-28) play the middle contest of a 3-game series at Petco Park in San Diego Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Dodgers vs. Padres odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.
Season series: Dodgers lead 1-0
The Dodgers picked up a wild 8-7 victory in 10 innings in Monday's series opener at Petco Park, cashing as -121 favorites with the Over (8) hitting in the third inning. Neither of the starting pitchers had much to offer as Dodgers RHP Dustin May was trampled for 6 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits and 4 walks in just 5 innings, while Padres RHP Nick Pivetta was shelled for 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.
It was a game for the offenses. Dodgers 1B Freddie Freeman went 3-for-5 with a double, 2 runs and an RBI, C Will Smith (1-for-4) had a 2-run HR and 3 RBIs, and OF Andy Pages (2-for-5, RBI) and 2B Tommy Edman (2-for-5, RBI) each knocked in runs in LA's go-ahead 10th inning.
Padres LF Tyler Wade (1-for-1) turned a 2-run deficit into a 6-5 lead with a 3-run triple in the bottom of the third, while 3B Manny Machado stayed hot with a 2-for-5 performance with an RBI double. CF Jackson Merrill finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.
The Dodgers have won 2 in a row, re-discovering their offense. After scoring just 1 run in the first 2 games of their weekend series at St. Louis, they've cobbled together 15 runs in the past 2 games, helping the Over cash in both outings.
The Padres' 7 runs were the most they've scored in their last 11 games. However, the 8 runs allowed are also the most the pitching staff had surrendered in the last 11 games. Monday's Over snapped a 4-game Under run for San Diego.
Dodgers at Padres projected starters
TBD vs. RHP Dylan Cease
The Dodgers haven't announced a starter at the time of this publishing.
Cease (1-5, 4.72 ERA) makes his 14th start. He has a 1.31 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9 and 11.1 K/9 in 68 2/3 innings.
Last start: Loss, 5 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 7 K in 3-2 setback at San Francisco Giants Thursday
2025 home stats: 1-2, 3.66 ERA (32 IP, 13 ER), 5 HR, 1.34 WHIP, 11.8 K/9 in 6 starts
2024 vs. Dodgers (regular season): 1-0, 3.38 ERA (10 2/3 IP, 4 ER), 6 BB, 10 K in 2 starts
Career vs. Dodgers (regular season): 1-1, 2.61 ERA (20 2/3 IP, 6 ER), 1.45 WHIP, 12.2 K/9 in 4 starts

Dodgers at Padres picks and predictions
Prediction
Dodgers 5, Padres 4
The DODGERS (+100) are worth a look at even-money at home.
I just don't trust Cease, who is 1-5 this season ... and that win was against a Cleveland Guardians team he knows well from his days with the Chicago White Sox. Plus, that lone victory came way back on April 2 in his second start of the season.
While Los Angeles is having a bullpen day, it has a respectable relief corps with a 3.88 ERA, according to MLB.com.
The Padres +1.5 (-200) will cost 2 times the potential return. That's too much risk just for a little bit of insurance. It might make you feel better to side with the home team since it named a projected starting pitcher, while there is uncertainty with who will lead off on the mound for the visitors. But, Cease is anything but a sure-fire option.
AVOID.
OVER 8 (+100) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at best.
We had an unexpected Over result in the series opener. In fact, it was an old-fashioned slugfest at Petco Park, a venue which usually doesn't see a ton of shootouts -- the Under is 18-12-1 there this season. With a bullpen game for LA, and a so-so Cease on the other side, we could get some big production, especially early on.

Yankees Facing Difficult Ben Rice Decision After Giancarlo Stanton Update

Yankees Facing Difficult Ben Rice Decision After Giancarlo Stanton Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The longer that All-Star designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton remained on the injured list, the longer that young slugger Ben Rice got to stay in the New York Yankees' lineup. Rice's run as the Yankees' starting DH is nearing its final weeks, however. Stanton is finally nearing a return to the majors after a prolonged battle with tennis elbow in both arms; the five-time All-Star begins a rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A Somerset. While Rice has been an impressive breakout star in his first full season, not even a propensity for mammoth home runs stands to keep him in the lineup. Rice enters Tuesday hitting .241 with 12 homers, 25 RBI, and a .825 OPS through 218 plate appearances. Rice ranks 34th among all qualified hitters in OPS, and his .497 slugging percentage is 24th in the league. Most teams would kill for production like that, but most teams aren't the Yankees. Stanton's contract all but guarantees him a spot as the Yankees' DH, and Paul Goldschmidt is enjoying an All-Star-caliber season at first base. That doesn't leave many at-bats for Rice, especially because the Yankees remain committed to Austin Wells at catcher. SNY's Andy Martino recently dismissed the idea the Yankees should demote Rice to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so he can get regular at-bats. Martino instead proposed the Yankees work to play Stanton, Rice, and Goldschmidt at least two out of every three games. Martino also reported that the Yankees do not intend to play Rice anywhere but at catcher, first base, or designated hitter. "Rice is closer to gracing the cover of 'MLB: The Show' than he is to earning a trip to Scranton," Martino wrote. Either way, the Yankees find themselves in a difficult situation, one where there are too many hitters with too few at-bats to go around. It's better than the alternative, as teams like the Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins know all too well. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 10, 2025, where it first appeared. 2025 Club World Cup odds: Why backing Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid to pip PSG makes sense

For more stories like this, click here to follow The Athletic's sports betting section and have them added to your feed. The FIFA Club World Cup is here and, if you're like us, well, you don't know what to make of it. But the fact of the matter is, it's a summer football tournament featuring some of the best teams across the globe. Advertisement If you plan on strapping yourself to the sofa from June 14 to July 13, it's probably worth having a gander at the betting markets. Unlike the domestic season, where every team wants to claim silverware, there's probably going to be some questionable levels of motivation to consider when placing wagers. A club like Real Madrid — the outright betting favourites — should have no problem dispatching the Al-Hilals of the world, but will they care enough to do so? Will Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and the rest of the chasing pack worry about protecting players? Or will they brush aside the concerns all in the name of winning another trophy? We'll dive into the top five Club World Cup winner favourites and see if we can suss out which of the teams will back up their odds in a month's time. Brett Koremenos: After a disappointing season by the club's lofty standards, Los Blancos have all the motivation in the world to carve a path to New Jersey and beyond. Xabi Alonso's arrival also adds an element of intrigue. Presumably, there will be a clear directive from the new boss to utilise these games to implement his tactics and kick off his tenure with a signature win. On the pitch, the acquisition of Trent Alexander-Arnold could be a game-changer. Madrid's passing was a key issue last season, and Alexander-Arnold has already proven at Liverpool that he's a ball-progressing, chance-creation machine. He also fills a major hole at right back. Madrid should be a dominant force this season with him in the side. Throw in their incentive to purge a plunderless Champions League campaign from the collective mind and 4/1 odds seem rather tempting. Sam Tighe: Expect PSG's immense swagger and confidence in possession to hit the accelerator now they've been crowned European champions. They're better than everyone else, they know it, and now they have the proof. The earlier question of how bothered this team will be about this tournament, though, is very fair. Of all the UEFA representatives, PSG could justifiably be the least interested. They're probably the only side present who don't need the riches that winning it would bring, and also potentially knackered. They won the treble, then seven of their first-choice players played in the UEFA Nations League finals. Advertisement Is there any chance these guys could get a moment to, you know, celebrate their incredible achievements? They're rightly priced as a strong contender to win because they're the best team in the world. But in terms of motivation, they'll be lightyears behind Real Madrid, which seems to be a key factor for the bookmakers. Koremenos: Unlike Madrid, City's transfer additions lead to more questions than answers. Joško Gvardiol would be an amazing player at any position, but he was a world-destroying force as a left-back. Yet Rayan Aït-Nouri has been brought into the fold. Pep Guardiola also spent half of last season trying to mend a shattered defence — and he succeeded by the end of the season. This makes it all the more puzzling that he signed two midfielders, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, (maybe they got a deal on Rayans?) who contribute nothing to the defence. With Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and Jack Grealish all on their way out the door, this team feels like a major work in progress. Not only are 11/2 odds for City intriguingly low, but there's also a real chance with all these moving pieces that we see some shocking results. Guardiola may also view this as an opportunity to tinker with his new toys rather than just trying to churn out results. Tighe: Well, Harry Kane's excited. That much we can confirm. He has a fair point about supposed inaugural tournaments carrying a 'unique' flavour, and as a natural goalscorer, will probably be hell-bent on being crowned the first Club World Cup Golden Boot winner. If he achieves that, Bayern will inevitably have gone far — unless of course he scores nine against Auckland City, then none against anyone else. Die Rekordmeister have paid some nominal fees to bring two summer signings — Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof — into the fold early, so that they can play in the United States. The former should prove to be immediately important, as Bayern's centre-backs corps is very injured and in need of help. Tighe: Chelsea round off the top five favourites, pipping the likes of Atlético Madrid (12/1) and Champions League finalists Inter (14/1), plus every non-UEFA representative. At first glance that seems generous to the Blues, but they did win five of their last six Premier League games to secure a top-five berth. Advertisement They're also adding a lot of fresh energy to the squad: Dário Essugo, Liam Delap and Mamadou Sarr are all new signings who will take part in the tournament. Meanwhile, Andrey Santos and Mike Penders, who spent the 2024-25 season out on loan, will also be added to the pile. That creates a dynamic in which a fair chunk of Chelsea's squad will be raring to go and eager to impress — a ripple effect that could result in the rest raising their game.
