Missing man's mum hopes for peace after remains find

Yahoo22-05-2025
The mother of a man missing for 18 years said she was "hoping for some peace" after human remains were found close to where he disappeared.
Terry McSpadden was 24 when he was last seen on March 2 2007 after spending the evening in the Locomotive pub in Wisbech, close to the Norfolk-Cambridgeshire border.
On Sunday police were called to Lynn Road, Walton Highway, in Wisbech after a discovery of partial human remains by a member of the public.
Mr McSpadden's mother, Helen Thrower, confirmed that police had contacted the family about the find.
She said: "It's too early to say whether it's Terry or not.
"Me and other people whose family members are missing, we're hoping for some peace. Until we get some identification, we can't know."
The father of two had been working as a window fitter and had been at the Locomotive pub in Wisbech the night he went missing.
He was seen on CCTV withdrawing money from a cash machine at Tesco at 01:00 GMT, and buying goods in the store.
He never turned up at work that Friday morning and his hand-painted black mountain bike, which he used for local transport, was never recovered.
In 2013, a crown court judge threw out a murder prosecution on grounds of insufficient evidence. Three years later, Norfolk Coroner's Court ruled Terry likely died the day he disappeared.
A spokesperson said: "Officers are exploring a number of lines of inquiry.
"The cordon is still in place on Lynn Road and will remain for some time."

Tesco shopper horrified after 'finding piece of glass' in £1.80 meal deal pasta

A Tesco shopper was shocked after 'finding a shard of glass' in their £1.80 cheese and tomato piece. The 44-year-old man, who wished to remain anonymous, took a bite into the pasta and immediately noticed a 'hard piece'. The customer, who works as a civil servant, assumed it was a 'shell' but was gobsmacked to discover 'it was a piece of glass', he claims. READ MORE: 'Demonised' drink actually has healthy benefits Get breaking news on BirminghamLive WhatsApp, click the link to join Thankfully, he was uninjured. He told BirminghamLive: "I took the meal to work and began to eat it. "I bit into a hard piece of pasta, which I assumed was a shell, but when I took the piece out of my mouth, I noticed that it was a piece of glass. "Luckily, I did not fully bite into it as it would have cut my mouth or tongue. He bought the pasta as part of a £3.60 meal deal from the Tesco store in Hamstead Village, in Great Barr, Birmingham, on the evening of Sunday, July 6. The shopper, who hails from Birmingham, continued: "I was shocked and at the same time lucky. "If I had swallowed the piece of glass, I could have potentially injured myself. "I showed my work colleagues, and they were shocked too. "It has put me off buying any pasta meal deal in the future from any store." He added: "I just hope Tesco takes this matter seriously before someone is injured." The customer has since returned the pasta and accompanying 'glass shard' to Tesco. A follow-up investigation has concluded that the sharp object was actually a piece of plastic originating from the product's packaging. Tesco said this was an isolated incident within the production process and additional steps have been taken to ensure it won't happen again. A review of the production process has been carried out and staff have been given additional training. In addition, the customer has been offered a full refund and they've been directly contacted by Tesco. A company spokesperson said: 'We're sorry to hear about this. "We work closely with our suppliers to ensure there are robust quality procedures in place. "We have fully investigated this, and the supplier has taken additional steps to ensure all products meet our high quality standards."

Law school grad has medical emergency and collapses during bar exam in New York

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A law school graduate collapsed while taking the bar exam in a New York City suburb this week, prompting an emergency response as other aspiring lawyers worked on their exams. But some Reddit users claiming they were among the test-takers Wednesday say they're upset the exam wasn't halted outright. Hofstra University spokesperson Terry Coniglio said Friday that the test-taker collapsed shortly before a scheduled lunch break at the Long Island campus. Hofstra Public Safety officers immediately provided life saving emergency care, including CPR and defibrillation, until paramedics arrived and transported them to a local hospital, she said. The New York State Board of Law Examiners, which administers the exam, said the medical emergency occurred 'only a few minutes' before the end of the exam's morning session and staff promptly contacted emergency responders. 'The exam concluded as our staff was obtaining medical aid for the candidate,' the Friday statement said. 'As soon as the exam ended the proctors collected the exams and the candidates were dismissed from the room so that EMTs could provide the needed medical care to the candidate.' The university and the state board wished the law candidate, who has not been named, a speedy recovery. The board said it is also continuing to review what happened, including which candidates may have been impacted, and 'will formulate an appropriate response in due course.'

Man threw petrol bomb at police outside Aldi

A man who threw a petrol bomb at police before pointing an imitation firearm towards them has been found guilty of attempting to cause an explosion with intent to endanger life. David Wiatrowski, 36, used a hammer to smash the windows of an Aldi store in Boston, Lincolnshire, on New Year's Day, before confronting officers who arrived to arrest him. Wiatrowski, of Bradford Road, Boston, previously admitted possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, affray and criminal damage at a hearing in February. He was convicted by a jury at Lincoln Crown Court on Wednesday following a three-day trial and is due to be sentenced on 2 October. Lincolnshire Police said that at the time of the incident, Wiatrowski had what appeared to be a firearm in a holster on his right hip. He shouted to officers to get back in their vehicle as he lit a rag in a bottle and threw it towards them, before making a motion with the gun as if he were cocking it. Wiatrowski fled, but was arrested on 10 January after a member of the public responded to an appeal. According to police, Wiatrowski had no apparent motive for his actions, but told officers he was bored with life and wanted to make a Molotov cocktail – a type of petrol bomb. Officers found CCTV footage of him attempting to fill a drinking bottle with petrol as part of his plan. When questioned about why he had thrown the petrol bomb and pointed the gun, he said he wanted to scare the officers, "to think they were going to die". He also told police he had no intention of entering the store, on Queen Street, after smashing the windows. Det Insp Melissa Rooke said: "This was a calculated and entirely senseless act, carried out with blatant disregard for the impact it would have. "It's no surprise that those who responded to this incident were profoundly affected by what they encountered. Our officers faced an individual whose clear objective was to instil fear and potentially inflict serious harm."
