Shooting damages Whitby home, Durham police investigating

Police in Durham Region are looking for a suspect after a bullet went through a glass door at a home in Whitby on Canada Day.
In a release, police say just before 11:30 p.m. on July 1, officers responded to the area of Prince of Wales Drive and Regal Briar Street, near Thickson and Manning roads, for an armed person call.
A bullet was found inside the home, having entered through a glass door, they said.
Investigators said residents were home at the time of the shooting, but no one was injured.
'There is evidence to suggest that the firearm was used in the greenspace east of Prince of Wales Drive and the bullet travelled into the residence,' they said in the release.
Anyone with video footage of the area at the time of the shooting is asked to contact Durham police at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 1845, or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

For years, soldiers with an Ottawa military unit have operated a private Facebook account where they post photos of themselves in uniform exposing their genitals, as well as antisemitic, misogynistic, homophobic and racist comments. Article content The Canadian Army confirmed to the Ottawa Citizen that it had started an investigation in December into the group that is known as the Blue Hackle Mafia. The group is made up of soldiers from the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, a reserve unit that operates out of the Cartier Square Drill Hall on Queen Elizabeth Driveway. Article content Article content Some of the images posted show male soldiers in uniform exposing their genitals, others posing naked with Canadian Forces weapons or simulating sexual acts with each other in uniform. Some of the photos were taken at military installations. There are also derogatory sexual comments posted about former prime minister Justin Trudeau as well as discussions about raping grandmothers. Article content In one posting the military personnel talk about getting together for drinks at an Ottawa bar. 'All welcome (except the Jews of course),' the post noted. Article content The Ottawa Citizen provided screenshots of some of the postings to Canadian Army commander Lt.-Gen. Michael Wright on June 24, after which he confirmed that an investigation had already been started into the social media group. Article content 'I can share that I am disgusted by the content of some of the posts published on this group,' Wright stated in an email to the Ottawa Citizen. 'Posting such content runs counter to our values and ethics. I have reinforced with the chain of command the importance of our military disciplinary and administrative processes in addressing reported misconducts.' Article content Article content Wright characterized the Blue Hackle Mafia Facebook group as featuring 'abhorrent racist, misogynistic, homophobic, and antisemitic comments and images.' 'I have ordered that any serving Canadian Army members currently on this social media group immediately cease their participation,' he added. 'Further, I have issued direction to the Canadian Army chain of command to reinforce that this type of behaviour is unacceptable, and any member who engages in inappropriate behaviour should expect to face administrative and/or disciplinary consequences.' Fatal crash in Chatham-Kent claims life of Ridgetown woman

A woman from Ridgetown has died after a crash in Chatham-Kent. Around 10:320 a.m. Thursday, police and EMS were sent to a crash on Longwoods Road between Wallace Street and Pitt Road. According to police, the collision involved two vehicles, each with one occupant. A 29-year-old man from Thamesville was transported to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance with minor injuries, and A 29-year-old woman from Ridgetown was taken to Four Counties Hospital with serious injuries and later succumbed to her injuries. The Traffic Management Unit attended the scene and the roadway was closed for several hours but has since reopened - the investigation is ongoing. A 30-year-old from St. Catharines has been charged with several offences after police stopped a vehicle on Highway 17 late last month in Nairn-Hyman Township. The street crime unit of the Ontario Provincial Police stopped the vehicle June 26 around 9:45 p.m., with help from the Manitoulin OPP. The suspect has been charged with several weapons offences, including having a prohibited device, having a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of having a firearm while prohibited, and two charges of drug trafficking. The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury on July 10.
