New York: At least 11 people were injured in a stabbing at a Walmart store in Traverse City in the northern part of the US state of Michigan.
Around 4:45 p.m. local time (2045 GMT) on Saturday, a 42-year-old man entered the store and used a folding knife style weapon to stab people there, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea told reporters.
The suspect was in custody and the attack appeared to be a random one, said the sheriff.
As of Saturday evening, three people were undergoing surgery at Munson Medical Center. Five victims were in serious condition and six in critical condition, Munson Healthcare said in a statement.
People are advised to avoid the area as the investigation continues, Xinhua news agency reported.
Earlier in the day, the Michigan State Police said the suspect had been taken into custody. Shea said the suspect is believed to be a Michigan resident but declined to share further details.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said: "Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence."
Walmart said in a statement that it would continue to work closely with law enforcement in the investigation.
"Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we're thankful for the swift action of first responders," the statement said.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said in a social media post that bureau officials were responding to "provide any necessary support."

The Team Rocket F-4 Raider aircraft went down in the Puerto Soller area on Saturday night. According to Spanish media as cited by Reuters, the plane appeared to be performing aerial stunts before it plunged into the water around 8.20 pm. Emergency services launched an immediate search, but the victims could not be located during the initial operation. The search resumed at first light on Sunday, with specialist divers deployed to the area. "At approximately 1 pm.(1100 GMT) specialist divers from the Civil Guard recovered the lifeless bodies of the pilot and his son who accompanied him in a sea which reaches a depth of 30 metres and they have been transferred to the Puerto of Soller," the Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement. Ukraine's drone attack sparks fire at oil depot in Russia's Sochi, governor says

More than 120 firefighters were trying to extinguish a blaze at an oil depot in the Russian city of Sochi that was sparked by a Ukrainian drone attack, regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said early on Sunday on the Telegram messaging app. In the Krasnodar region on the Black Sea where Sochi is located, a fuel tank with a capacity of 2,000 cubic metres (70,000 cubic feet) was on fire, Russia's RIA news agency reported, citing emergency officials. The Russian defence ministry said in its daily morning report on Telegram that its air defence units destroyed 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, including one over the Krasnodar region and 60 over the waters of the Black Sea. The ministry reports only how many drones its units destroy, not how many Ukraine launched. Rosaviatsia, Russia's civil aviation authority, temporarily halted flights at Sochi's airport to ensure air safety before saying on Telegram that flights resumed as of 0200 GMT on Sunday. Reuters could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. The attack, which Kondratyev said was in the Adler district of the coastal resort city, would be Ukraine's latest on infrastructure inside Russia that Kyiv deems key to Moscow's war efforts. A woman was killed in the Adler district in a Ukrainian drone attack late last month, but attacks on Sochi, which hosted the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, have been infrequent in the war that Russia launched in February 2022. The Krasnodar region is home to the Ilsky refinery near the city of Krasnodar, among the largest in southern Russia and a frequent target of Ukraine's drone attacks. Also on Sunday, the governor of Voronezh region in southern Russia said four people were injured in a Ukrainian drone strike that caused several fires, while Russia launched a missile attack on Kyiv, according to the military administration of the Ukrainian capital. The Russian defence ministry said that its units destroyed 18 Ukrainian drones over the Voronezh region that borders Ukraine.

Deadly Myanmar junta airstrike hits rebel-held mining town kills 13 including monk, child

Reuters A Myanmar government air assault on a rebel-held ruby mining hub killed 13 people on Saturday, according to a resident and an armed opposition group spokeswoman. Myanmar has been engulfed by civil conflict since the military seized power in a coup in 2021, prompting resistance from pro-democracy rebels who allied with long-active ethnic armed organisations. Their fragmented forces struggled to make ground at first, but a concerted attack that began in late 2023 conquered large chunks of land, including the town of Mogok, the heart of the ruby trade. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Myanmar is rich in precious stones and rare earth elements, which are sought after by all groups and sold off, primarily to neighbouring China, to fund war efforts. A junta representative was not available for comment. However, a local who declined to be named for security reasons said the strike took place around 08:15 am (0145 GMT), killing seven instantly, with six dying later of their wounds. He said among the dead were a Buddhist monk collecting alms and a father and son who were riding the same motorbike. 'A car passing through the area was hit, too,' he added. 'Seven people were wounded, including the driver.' A spokeswoman for the Ta'ang National Liberation Army, which has occupied Mogok since last summer, matched that death toll, but gave a figure of 14 wounded. 'It was in the morning time when the airstrike hit a public area,' said spokeswoman Lway Yay Oo. 'There were a lot of people walking in the street, therefore a lot of people were killed.' The military was initially backfooted by the rebels' combined offensive, but has enacted conscription to boost its ranks. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Its troops recently retook several key settlements in central Myanmar, including the gold mining hub of Thabeikkyin, which it seized late last month after a year-long battle. The junta on Thursday ended the state of emergency it had declared after toppling the government of Aung San Suu Kyi more than four years ago, and has touted elections in December as an off-ramp for the conflict. However, with Suu Kyi still jailed, opposition groups, including ousted lawmakers, are boycotting the poll. A UN expert in June described the exercise as a 'fraud' designed to legitimise the junta's continued rule.
