Man Utd 'confident' of landing Bryan Mbeumo in £50m deal as transfer plan clear

Manchester United are set for a busy summer in the transfer market and already a pattern is becoming clear at Old Trafford ahead of Ruben Amorim's first pre-season at the club Manchester United have moved on from Liam Delap and will now look to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo in a £50million deal this summer. The Red Devils are growing increasingly confident of being able to lure the forward to Old Trafford after the striker indicated he wanted to move to the club. United will be required to fight off interest from the likes of Newcastle and Arsenal to secure the Cameroon international. Ruben Amorim is said to be keen to make Mbeumo, who scored 20 goals in the Premier League in 2024/25, an integral member of his team. ‌ The Red Devils have returned their attention to Mbeumo after missing out to Chelsea for Ipswich Town Forward Delap. The 22-year-old former Man City youngster is primed to be announced as the Blues' newest signing after undergoing his medical, with Chelsea having agreed to pay his £30m release clause. ‌ United will hope to continue to strengthen Amorim's hand after announcing their first deal of the summer of the weekend. The 13-times Premier League champions confirmed a deal for Matheus Cunha after agreeing a £62.5million deal with Wolves. The Brazil forward was present in Manchester over the weekend before departing for international duty. The club want to replenish their front line after failing to see a member of their squad reach double figures in the Premier League's goalscoring charts. But United's attention turning to Mbeumo also appears to suggest an emphasis on targeting Premier League talent. That would appear to see the club taking a different approach to recent seasons. Last summer saw some heavy spending as the likes of Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee were brought in from abroad and the season before that saw only Mason Mount arrive from England's top-flight. And in 2022/23, the signings of Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro stole the headlines, though United did take advantage of Christian Eriksen being available for free It perhaps comes as little surprise that the club would look from within the division after struggling to 15th in 2024/25. And United's issues were all the more evident domestically, as they earned their way to the final before coming unstuck against British opposition in Tottenham. ‌ United boss Amorim has previously highlighted why he believes issues have been found when playing more familiar opposition. "When you play against any team in England, the physicality is there," he said. "If you don't have physicality, you will struggle a lot. Antony is so much better now in Spain. There are many factors, but I guarantee you it's physicality." And bringing players in who already have Premier League experience, and have thrived in the environment, such as Cunha and Mbeumo, would not only improve the team but potentially require less time to adjust. After a dismal start for Amorim, he will hope such players at least offer part of the answer.

Rio Ferdinand admits Liverpool transfer 'hurt him a bit' as Man Utd lose out

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was disappointed to see the Red Devils miss out on the opportunity to complete a deal for Liverpool's latest signing Rio Ferdinand wanted to see Jeremie Frimpong join Manchester United this summer and was left hurt the Netherlands international signed for Liverpool. The full-back arrived at Anfield after the Reds agreed to pay his £29.5million release clause to Bayer Leverkusen. Frimpong signed a five-year deal with Liverpool as he was quickly brought in to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold after the academy product joined Real Madrid. The 24-year-old is among Europe's most attacking right-backs and bagged five goals and eight assists in 2024/25, having scored 10 goals and provided seven assists this season before. ‌ And Liverpool quickly swooped to shore up the gap in his squad in their squad with Alexander-Arnold's exit long expected. And that has left Ferdinand dispondent. ‌ The former Manchester United defender reckons Frimpong would have been ideally suited to Ruben Amorim's style of play. "Frimpong is going to Liverpool which will hurt me a little bit, I've got to be honest," the former England international said on Rio Ferdinand Presents. "I think he would fit the way that Ruben Amorim wants to play perfectly." Former Manchester City academy ace Frimpong had no doubts over agreeing a move to Liverpool however. "It went quite easy," he said. "Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer," Frimpong said. "For me, it was like, 'Whatever you guys do, just get this done', [speaking to] my agents: 'Just get this done.' "Liverpool fans, I'm going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together. ‌ "I'm just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me and I won't let you guys down and I'll give you the energy that you guys want." Despite his disappointment, Ferdinand has been pleased with how quickly Manchester United have moved in the transfer market. The Red Devils have already confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. "I have to say, I'm really excited about Cunha signing," Ferdinand said. "I'm happy we signed him, I'm happy with how aggressive we've been immediately, acting on it instantly." ‌ He added: "I think this is a great start to the transfer window. If I was advising the recruitment team on anything now, I would be saying: 'Please make sure you do not forget an experienced No.9'. "I'm not going to say names, I've said the names too many times, and I would go and get a midfielder as well. A midfielder that can dictate the player and pass and be the orchestrator, but he also needs to have some legs about him as well. "That's what Ruben Amorim's teams are about, they do that. Those two players would be the next ones, a centre-forward and a central midfielder, also a right-back."

But SunSport understands the club are calm over talks, which began back in January, and hope to finalise the terms of his new bumper deal before pre-season begins next month. New sporting director Andrea Berta is believed to be taking a hands-on approach with contract extensions, needing to tie down fellow Hale End graduates Ethan Nwaneri and Bukayo Saka, as well as William Saliba and Gabriel. And boss Mikel Arteta said in April: 'The most energy we have to put in is making sure the players we have with us are happy, they feel valued, very much part of what we're doing." Such is his faith in Lewis-Skelly, Arteta has let Kieran Tierney, 27, leave on a free back to Celtic this summer and is open to selling Oleksandr Zinchenko, 28, with Borussia Dortmund interested. Lewis-Skelly – alongside his first team pal Nwaneri, 18 – has also never hid his love for Arsenal as a boyhood fan, and recently revealed his ambitions for next term. Going five years without silverware and a third-successive second-place Prem finish, he said: 'We just want to win, to make that jump to win a trophy, back-to-back trophies.' 'I am a fan of the club, so I was growing up watching them on TV, going to the games. In your mind you're always wanting to get where [the first team] is at.' Myles Lewis-Skelly winds up Real Madrid fans as Arsenal knock Los Blancos out of Champions League Midfielder Nwaneri is also holding talks with Arsenal over an extension, having signed his first professional deal in March 2024, having worked his way through the academy from the age of nine alongside Lewis-Skelly. Nwaneri is expected to receive a hefty rise in wages, as is Lewis-Skelly, having proved himself to be one of the most exciting teenage attackers in Europe. Having made 37 appearances in all competitions this term – 16 of those starts – and scoring nine goals, Nwaneri has been happy with his involvement under Arteta, and trusts the Spaniard with his development. However, there will need to be discussions over Nwaneri's role next year, both in terms of position and regularity, especially with Arteta targeting several attacking reinforcements this summer, currently linked to Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres, RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams. During Bukayo Saka's three-month absence from December following hamstring surgery, Nwaneri deputised on the right wing, but can also play as a false nine and No10. Despite the £51m midfield arrival of Martin Zubimendi, Arteta will view Nwaneri as an integral squad member whose flexibility and all-round ability is highly valued.
