Terengganu Police Escort Hearses After Fatal UPSI Bus Crash
Terengganu Police Chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin said the initiative was taken to facilitate the journey of all hearses involved, following reports of traffic congestion in Gerik.
'We were informed that traffic in Gerik is slightly congested, so police have dispatched a patrol car from Besut to Gerik to escort the hearses to and from the location.
'In addition, police in Kelantan will also assist with the escort in each district along the route if there are traffic delays,' he said when contacted today.
Mohd Khairi also called on the public to cooperate by giving way so that the police escort and hearses can reach their destination without delay.
Fifteen Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students were killed and 17 others seriously injured when the chartered bus they were travelling in was involved in an accident with a Perodua Alaza along the mountain highway 1 am today.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Ministry of Transport is mulling over the proposal to establish the Malaysian Transportation Safety Board (MTSB), a special body tasked with investigating road accidents in the country, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Meanwhile, Loke said the ministry would also introduce several initiatives to elevate the status of the driving profession, including training programmes aimed at producing more competent and professional drivers. 'We want to work together to train more professional drivers. The ministry has several planned actions to uplift the status of this profession…we want drivers to be respected and social status to be elevated,' he said. Additionally, Loke highlighted the ongoing issue of a shortage of bus and lorry drivers due to a lack of interest and low wages, and stressed the ministry's efforts to ensure drivers are fairly compensated in line with their working hours, workload, and the risks they face. 'However, we must not assume that just anyone, even those with criminal records or poor driving histories, can be hired as drivers. We are currently working on a database to identify individuals with past offences, especially those involving dangerous driving, so they can be filtered out,' he added. — Bernama

Terengganu police seize RM6.3mil worth of meth
KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu police dismantled a drug distribution syndicate and seized 198.9 kg of methamphetamine worth RM6.3 million on July 28. State police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said the seizure was made through an integrated roadblock operation by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division and Traffic Enforcement Division of the Kuala Terengganu district police headquarters in Sungai Ikan on the Kota Baru-Kuala Terengganu route at 5pm. He said the drugs were found in two cars, a Mercedes Benz and a Perodua Myvi, which the suspects had abandoned in front of residents' houses in Kampung Felda Belara after fleeing a roadblock. Police found that two cars had made sudden U-turns before fleeing towards Kota Baru. After a five-kilometre chase, police managed to find the abandoned vehicles in front of villagers' houses. "The results of the inspection found seven polystyrene boxes containing 188 packages filled with drugs which could be used by 995,550 people," he said at a press conference at the Terengganu police contingent headquarters here today. Mohd Khairi said initial investigations found that the drugs were brought in from Kelantan to be distributed to markets outside Terengganu, including the Klang Valley. According to him, the police have identified the owner of the Myvi car, but are still tracking down two suspects, including the drivers who are believed to be locals. Police have been unable to identify the owner of the Mercedes because its chassis had been damaged.
