Endo recalls unsuccessful Yokohama trial as he captains Liverpool against hometown club
It was the first time Endo played in the Liverpool shirt in his own country as the Premier League champions beat Yokohama 3-1 in a pre-season friendly.
'I supported this club actually and I went to (a) trial but I couldn't join this club. Now I came back here as a player of (Liverpool). It was a dream-come-true moment,' the 32-year-old told Liverpool's official website.
'It was an amazing moment for me because I came back to Japan as a Liverpool player. For me, it meant a lot.'
Endo made his senior debut at Shonan Bellmare, a club based in Hiratsuka, over 30 kilometres away from Yokohama. He played for Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart before joining Liverpool in 2023.
Virgil van Dijk handed Endo the captain's armband as the latter replaced the Dutchman in the second half.
'I think it was a great gesture. I think all Japanese people maybe wanted me to be captain,' Endo added.

He has three years left on his Newcastle contract but did not travel to Asia for the Magpies' ongoing pre-season tour, with the club saying he had a minor thigh injury. On Thursday, Real Sociedad confirmed he was at their Zubieta facility with his own trainers. It was reported on Friday that Newcastle had told Isak he could agree to a new deal containing a get-out clause for next year, but he responded by insisting he wants to move now. Liverpool manager Arne Slot has already bolstered his attacking options by signing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike and Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz during the current transfer window. But the Reds are keen to make their forward line even more formidable by adding Isak as they look to win back-to-back English titles for the first time since the 1980s. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe struck a defiant note earlier this week when he said, 'He is still our player. He's contracted to us. 'We, to a degree, control what is next for him. Nottingham Forest sign winger Ndoye from Bologna

(EPA Images pic) LONDON : Nottingham Forest have signed Swiss winger Dan Ndoye from Serie A side Bologna on a five-year deal, the Premier League club said today. Financial details of the transfer were not revealed by either club but British media reported Forest paid a fee of around £34 million for the 24-year-old Switzerland international. Ndoye joined Bologna in August 2023 from Swiss side Basel for around €10 million. He made 41 appearances for Bologna across all competitions last season, scoring nine goals and registering six assists. He scored the winning goal against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final, helping Bologna secure their first major trophy in 51 years. 'It is a really exciting time at Forest and I knew straight away that I wanted to be a part of the project. It's a really ambitious team with a fantastic history and I can't wait to get started,' Ndoye said. Ndoye could take the place of former Forest winger Anthony Elanga, who joined Newcastle United earlier this month and also played mainly on the right, like Ndoye. Since making his international debut in 2022, Ndoye has earned 22 caps for Switzerland, starting all five matches at Euro 2024 during their run to the quarter-finals. West Ham midfielder Paqueta cleared of alleged betting breaches by FA
LONDON: West Ham United's Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of four alleged breaches of betting rules after an independent Regulatory Commission hearing, the Football Association said on Thursday. Last year, the 27-year-old was charged with deliberately seeking to receive a booking during four Premier League games between November 2022 to August 2023 against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Bournemouth. The FA said it was alleged that Paqueta sought to influence the progress, conduct, or any other aspect of, or occurrence in those matches by deliberately trying to get booked to manipulate the betting market for the benefit of others. "Paqueta denied the charges against him, and a Regulatory Commission found them to be not proven following a hearing," the FA said in a statement. The Brazilian has been charged with two breaches in relation to alleged failures to comply with his obligations to answer questions and provide information to the FA investigation. Paqueta, who was facing the risk of a lifetime ban, denied the alleged spot-fixing charges and expressed frustration over media coverage of the matter, which he said was misleading. "Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations," Paqueta said in a statement on Thursday. "I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face. To my wife, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me, thank you." The FA began their investigation of the alleged betting breaches in August 2023. In October last year , Paqueta urged the FA to investigate how information from its case against him had been leaked to the media. "We are pleased Lucas has been cleared ... as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process," West Ham Vice-Chair Karren Brady said. "Despite the incredible pressure on him, Lucas has performed week in and week out for the club, always giving everything. It has been a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he has remained absolutely professional throughout."
