Man Ray and Max Dupain surrealism

The Guardiana day ago
Max Dupain made a swift transition from pictorialism to modernist values in his photography in the mid-1930s. Light, pattern and relationship became more important to his work, as did cropping, framing and technical experimentation. His use of solarisation and photomontage in Homage to Man Ray synthesises a curious but compelling image that hovers between reality and otherworldliness. Photograph: Max Dupain
Eyes are a key motif in surrealist iconography as a symbol of inner vision and Man Ray believed they 'give forth an image of invisible thought'. While Glass Tears has the stylised, melodramatic appearance of a still from a silent film, the image poses questions of permanence and transience and the sentimentality of human sorrow. Photograph: Man Ray
Max Dupain was drawn to notions of the known and unseen and the way that portraiture could be a vehicle for both exposure and discretion. His portrayal of art critic Leon Gellert invites speculation on the opportunistic nature of the photographic portrait and the studied nature of its sculptural equivalent. Photograph: Max Dupain
Man Ray maintained that it was through the gaze of the old masters that he understood how to portray people: 'they knew drawing, perspective, staging … I admired the respect with which they reproduced the proportions of human features'. Yet Man Ray's own contribution to the genre was his willingness to set the model free from traditional representation and play with the effects of light and imagination—to imbue a sense of poetry or mystery. Photograph: Man Ray
The advancements of 'new photography' presented Max Dupain with an 'exciting array of options' for his practice, both technical and attitudinal. He experimented widely with its favoured techniques, but also with transposing imagery to create pictures that transcended the rational and everyday, as seen in this photomontage. The 1920s and 30s saw a significant shift for photography across the globe as artists pioneered new ways of looking through the viewfinder and exaggerated formal relationships, fragmented imagery, and relied less on narrative or naturalism. The cropped hand of this image, disassociated from its body or any graspable context, at once recalls the incompleteness of a broken classical sculpture and the surreality of a dream. Photograph: Man Ray
In 1922 Man Ray published an album of 12 plates featuring a 'new procedure' he called 'rayography'. It involved placing objects on top of photosensitive paper and then exposing the paper to light very briefly in the darkroom. The white and paler areas of the print are where the objects rested, the darkest being the areas of space around them, creating an inverse image. Photograph: Man Ray
Max Dupain's investigations with camera-less photography honored Man Ray's—he even titled several of his prints 'rayographs'—but he also investigated extensions of the method by bringing figurative imagery into the photogram's abstract field, and further exploring ambiguous scale and depth. Photograph: Max Dupain
Max Dupain was one of the first Australian artists to take a serious interest in Surrealism. Shattered Intimacy adopts three revered surrealist tropes: the motif of the displaced classical figure — here a miniature replica of Discobolus — the discordant tableaux of unconnected objects, and the mysterious possibilities of unnatural lighting effects. The result is a glimpse into an alternative dimension.

I asked my girlfriend to send nude pics to my male pal – but now I fear I've pushed her into his arms

DEAR DEIDRE: I ENCOURAGED my girlfriend to send nude pics to my male pal and it has turned out to be a foolish mistake. Now I fear I've pushed her into his arms and I'm scared I'm going to lose her. My partner has an awesome body which she loves to show off — and I can't get enough of it. She has an hourglass figure with long legs and a tiny waist like Jessica Rabbit. Knowing how much her body turns me on, she sometimes sends me naked snaps when we're not together to get me in the mood for sex when I come home, or just to tease and entertain me. We've been in a relationship for eight years and are in our mid-thirties. Recently, I told her it didn't seem fair that only I was able to appreciate her incredible figure. I said it was a shame nobody else could see the photos she sent me, and would she mind if I shared them with my friend? She wasn't sure at first but, with a little persuasion, she agreed. I gave her my pal's number and told her to send pics to him directly. He told me he was impressed. A few days ago, I then caught her giggling over her phone. When I asked what was funny, she blushed, and said my friend had sent her some pics of his own. They were of his penis. I felt insanely jealous — he's very well endowed, far bigger than me. I then got hold of her phone while she was in the shower and discovered she has started sending him pictures — and even videos — that she hasn't sent me. I feel sick and so angry with myself. I'm sure they're heading for an affair but I don't know what to do. DEIDRE SAYS: Your jealousy is quite understandable but you didn't think through the possible consequences of your request. Now, unfortunately, things have taken an unwelcome turn and you feel out in the cold. But what's going on between them isn't entirely clear. Perhaps she's upset with you for wanting to share her photos and this is how she's getting her own back. Maybe she thinks it's what you want. Alternatively, as you fear, she may now have fallen for your friend. Whatever the situation, if you want to save your relationship, you need to tell her how you feel and ask her to be honest with you. My support pack, Looking After Your Relationship, should help you both. I'M AFRAID TO REVEAL OUR MIXED-RACE AGE-GAP LOVE DEAR DEIDRE: THE woman I'm having sex with is older than me and from a different culture. I'm worried people will judge me. I'm 25, white British, and she's 38, black African. We met at a church group where we were both volunteering last year. I thought she was drop-dead gorgeous but never dreamt anything could happen. Then we bumped into each other on the train and she asked if I wanted to go for a drink. We did, and when I walked her home, I kissed her goodbye. There was so much chemistry between us. She asked me to come in and we had mind-blowing sex. Since then, we've been seeing each other regularly, having lots of sex and amazing conversations too, but I haven't told anyone. I think they'll call me her toy boy, or call her a cougar, or make derogatory comments on her skin colour. What should I do? If anyone judges you, it's either because they are jealous or racist. Age-gap relationships and those with people from different backgrounds do have their challenges because you have different life experiences and are at different stages, but they can work. Enjoy getting to know this woman. Your feelings may grow or fizzle out. See my support pack, Age Gaps, Do They Matter?, for more information. HIS LONG LUNCHES HAVE ME WORRIED DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN I secretly turned on my husband's phone tracker, I opened a can of worms. I thought it would be fun to see what he got up to each day, but now I am convinced he's having an affair because he has lied about where he goes for lunch. I feel so upset but can't tell him why without giving away the fact I've tracked him. We've been married for ten years and are in our early forties. I followed his movements for a week – and for three days in a row he went to a cafe near his office and stayed for an hour. When he came home, I asked what he'd had for lunch. He told me he'd bought a sandwich at Boots the first day, and had something in the canteen on the others. I know that's not true. He must be meeting another woman at the cafe. DEIDRE SAYS: Tracking someone secretly is a bit like reading their diary. It rarely ends well. Your husband may not be cheating. It's possible he lied about the cafe because he doesn't want you to know he's spending extra money on lunch. But the fact you tracked him suggests a pre-existing trust issue, even if you weren't conscious of it. Talk to him, explain you're not feeling completely secure in the relationship, and ask for reassurance. My support pack, Looking After Your Relationship, has tips. GROOMING KIDS IN HER HOT TUB DEAR DEIDRE: I WAS horrified to see the middle-aged woman next door in her hot tub with a young boy. It seemed totally inappropriate and I'm worried the child is being groomed. One evening, a few weeks ago, I looked out of my bedroom window and saw that my neighbour was in her hot tub. With her was a child, who looked around 11 or 12. She must be in her late fifties, doesn't have children and is a bit of a loner. I'm 46 and live with my husband and daughter. I don't know if the boy is related to her but it made me feel very uncomfortable. A few nights later, I saw them together in the hot tub again. This time my gut told me something perverse or evil was going on. I spoke to another neighbour who said she had also become aware of this and was worried about it. She said she'd seen other children going to the house too, at other times. I think I need to report this to someone but I'm not sure who to speak to. I'm not certain a crime is happening and have just my instincts. I don't want to get anyone into trouble if there's an innocent explanation. What should I do? DEIDRE SAYS: What you describe does sound extremely concerning and you're right to want to tell someone. You could contact the police or social services but it would be wise to get some advice first. Don't confront this woman yourself. Call the NSPCC free on 0808 800 5000 to explain your concerns. You can also contact the Stop It Now helpline which helps prevent child abuse ( 0808 1000 900). My support pack, Worried A Child's At Risk, has more guidance on what to do if you're that worried abuse is taking place.

Benjamin Sesko boasts Cristiano Ronaldo-esque leap set to strike fear in Premier League defenders upon Man Utd move

BENJAMIN SESKO is finally making the leap into the Premier League. After choosing Manchester United ahead of Newcastle, the RB Leipzig striker will be delighted if he can make half the impact of another forward known for gravity-defying jumps at Old Trafford, namely Cristiano Ronaldo. 9 9 9 Eight years ago, when still in his native Slovenia, Sesko posted an incredible video of him flying so high he could kick out at a basketball hoop — the global standard height is TEN FEET or just over three metres. In slow motion, the footage shows him jumping towards the backboard and dislodging a ball from the rim with his foot. This video eventually came to the attention of the recruitment department at Red Bull Salzburg and they started tracking this freak of nature. Aged 16, Sesko would eventually head to Austria. He spent four years there then moved to Red Bull stablemates Leipzig to become one of the most feared strikers in Europe. Sesko now stands at 6ft 5in and can jump not far off a further four feet, which is extraordinary. He is literally head and shoulders above his peers. United boss Ruben Amorim will utilise Sesko's super-human strength this season to finally help the Red Devils restore their bite in front of goal. Sesko's aerial ability, speed and power make him a real threat. He will certainly give defences food for thought — fuelled by plenty of protein. His breakfast consists of FOUR fried eggs, yoghurt with berries, muesli and freshly-squeezed fruit juice. For lunch, Sesko has chicken, rice, carrots and broccoli, with two slices of bread, followed by a fruit salad featuring mango, watermelon and pineapple. Bruno Fernandes branded 'proper captain' for his miserable trophy 'celebration' after Man Utd win Prem Summer Series Dinner is salmon with potato and a tomato and cucumber salad, before finishing the day with yet more muesli, this time livened up with some Quark cheese, cashew nuts, kiwi fruit and blueberries. His approach is bearing fruit, and although Sesko's shot accuracy and conversion rate need to improve with experience, he could be a huge success for the Red Devils over the next few years. It is turning into a nightmare for Newcastle, especially with star striker Alexander Isak looking to leave with Liverpool heavily linked. Meanwhile, the Old Trafford side will get a player who at Salzburg was known as the 'new Erling Haaland', with Manchester City's Norwegian star having made his mark at the club before leaving for Borussia Dortmund. 9 9 9 9 Sesko's leap only became famous a few years ago and until he began to flourish in Salzburg, was largely unknown. Yet as he found his feet in Austria, he moved to Leipzig and then started to terrorise Bundesliga defences. Sesko has remained a shy person and rarely gives an insight into his private life on Instagram unlike other players. Right now, you could argue, Sesko's possible future brother-in-law is actually more famous across the UK than him. His girlfriend, Anita, is the sister of Boris who has recently starred on Love Island. Sesko will form part of a new, three-pronged attacking dream team with £62.5million Matheus Cunha and £65m Bryan Mbuemo. The three scored 48 league goals between them last season, which is more than the entire United team managed in the Prem (44). Amorim opting for this line-up would mean skipper Bruno Fernandes dropping back into a deeper midfield role instead of occupying a No 10 spot himself. 9 9 Since August 2023, striker Sesko has been the top-scoring player in Europe aged under 23. He has struck 39 times, one ahead of midfield pair Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid and five more than Liverpool new boy Florian Wirtz. After Jamal Musiala of Bayern Munich (33) is Rasmus Hojlund with 26 goals. Yet United have been willing to listen to offers for Hojlund, and are ready to accept as little as £30m for the player they paid £64m for in 2023, although the Dane still wants to fight for his place in Manchester. Born just a few months before Sesko in 2003, Hojlund still has work to do but it might not be the worst thing for United — if they can afford to keep him — to allow him to grow alongside Sesko. You could see why joining Newcastle would have been a good option for Sesko. A side featuring in the Champions League this season and one where he could become a hero. Yet United are the biggest club in England and while they are not in European competition this term, their time will come again. With his three-pronged strikeforce and the genius of Fernandes pulling the strings behind them, Amorim's men could be a force in the Premier League this season.

Leggy Kate Moss uses £35K Birkin as a beach bag while joining bikini-clad daughter Lila and pal Jaime Winstone as they soak up the sun during lavish Ibiza getaway

Kate Moss chose to use A £35,000 Birkin as a beach bag amid her lavish Ibiza getaway with lookalike daughter Lila and pal Jaime Winstone on Wednesday. The supermodel, 51, was spotted toting the pricey accessory, which was left open and covered in sand, as she strolled along the beach. Kate put on a very leggy display in a white kaftan which she wore with a pair of skimpy gold bikini bottoms after enjoying a trip on a yacht which also saw them joined by Lila's boyfriend Yoni Helbitz. Shielding her eyes behind chic shades the completed the stylish ensemble with dazzling diamond bracelets and a huge cocktail ring. Meanwhile Lila, 22, showcased her jaw-dropping figure in a tiny black bikini as she topped up tan during her time on the water. The stunner looked nothing short of sensational in the skimpy swimwear as she larked about on deck while her beau swam in the water. Lila, 21, looked nothing short of incredible as she slipped into a tiny black bikini The supermodel was spotting toting the pricey accessory, which was left open and covered in sand, as she strolled along the beach following her yacht trip Lila and Yoni have been dating for nearly two years, with Daily Mail revealing in 2023 that they were an item after being spotted out in London frequently together. One on dry land the group later headed for a spot of retail therapy at a small store on the beach. Last month, Lila and Kate enjoyed a fun girls' trip on the island, and was also seen channelling her mother's iconic style. Lila's father is Dazed Media chief executive Jefferson Hack, with whom Kate was in a relationship in the early Noughties. The model has never been shy of stealing from her mum's wardrobe. From ballet pumps and waistcoats to biker jackets and transparent slip dresses, she has recreated almost every iconic Kate Moss look there is. 'I copy her outfits consistently,' Lila admitted in a magazine interview in 2023. '[Although] I steal mostly her bags. I can't steal her shoes, which is devastating. She's a size six. I'm a size five.' Kate and Lila have spoken candidly in the past about their unconventional relationship, with Kate telling Vogue in 2023: 'There were still rules in our house – always say please and thank you; never go out with wet hair or you'll catch a cold – even if I wasn't that strict. Now that she's 21, Lila's the one setting rules for me. 'Wear SPF50; quit smoking… Although she did give me this cigarette case as a gift recently that I just love... She's flown the nest now, and got her own place in downtown New York, but she's still so young in my mind... 'I feel like I'd already lived quite a few lives by Lila's age. I'd gone abroad. I'd had one serious boyfriend – and moved on to the next. In a lot of ways, though, Lila is so much more grown-up than I was in my 20s... While on board Kate looked words away from the runway as she protected herself from the scorching sun under a kooky straw hat and scarf Kate put on a very leggy display in a white kaftan which she wore with a pair of skimpy gold bikini bottoms The original Birkin bag sold last month for a whopping £7million Meanwhile Lila showcased her jaw-dropping figure in the skimpy swimmer while enjoying a trip on a yacht with pals Lila larked about on deck while boyfriend Yoni Helbitz swam in the water Lila and Yoni have been dating for nearly two years, with Daily Mail revealing in 2023 that they were an item after being spotted out in London frequently together She wore her long blonde hair loose as she enjoyed the lavish getaway The couple appeared to put on a flirty display as they relaxed at the back of the boat Kate took in the stunning views on her stroll The stunning model followed her mother's effortless style and wore a silk slip dress One on dry land the group later headed for a spot of retail therapy at a small store on the beach (L-R) Kate and Jaime picture 'Watching her establishing her career as a model takes me right back to the '90s when I was just starting out, but I know that things will be different for her.' 'She understands she can say no, for one thing, which I never did, and she has the right people around her – I've made sure of that. And let's face it, she's a lot more sensible than I was back then. I mean… thank God. Ha!' For last year's British Fashion Awards, she commissioned designer Nensi Dojaka to create a dress that was eerily reminiscent of her mother's infamous bias-cut Liza Bruce slip dress from 1993. While at New York Fashion Week, she stepped out in a near-identical Saint Laurent blazer and low-cut silk top Kate had worn two years before. Lila has been making moves in the fashion world and walked the runway at Paris Fashion Week for for Vivienne Westwood last year. It was a successful year for Lila after she fronted campaigns for the likes of Pepe Jeans - an international denim brand based on Portobello Road in Notting Hill - which happens to be the model's favourite hangout spot. Lila has never been shy of stealing from her mum's wardrobe and has recreated almost every iconic Kate Moss look there is She also starred in a campaign for the French brand Maje last year and is currently gracing the front rows of exclusive shows such as Yves Saint Laurent for Paris Fashion Week alongside her mother. After being signed to her mother's Kate Moss Agency when she was just 15, Lila became the face of Marc Jacobs Beauty in 2018. She went on to make her runway debut for the Italian fashion house Miu Miu in 2020, became an ambassador for YSL and made headlines when she walked the pink carpet for Victoria's Secret World Tour . The stunner has been hit with her fair share of nepotism accusations - the most recent being when she appeared in Edward Enninful's edition of Vogue called Legendary alongside the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Victoria Beckham. In 2021, when Lila was 19, she became the director of Grace Grove Ltd - the name of the company is a nod to The Grove, her family home in North London, which Kate sold in 2021.
