'This has been a really wonderful experience': Jeremy Strong on serving as Cannes jury
Cannes [France], May 25 (ANI): Actor Jeremy Strong reflected on his past 11 days as a member of the Cannes Film Festival competition jury, comparing it to the process of choosing a new pope as depicted in the Oscar-nominated film 'Conclave'.
"I feel immeasurably inspired by what I've seen here," Strong said during a press conference after the jury awarded Jafar Panahi's "It Was Just an Accident" with the Palme d'Or. "It's been so invigorating, and this sort of cumulative tally of the work I'll carry with me," reported Variety.
Strong continued, "This has been a really wonderful experience, a really connected experience with these people -- it's like 'Conclave' with champagne. It's really great."
Strong served under president Juliette Binoche along with Halle Berry, Payal Kapadia, Hong Sansoo, Alba Rohrwacher, Leila Slimani, Dieudo Hamadi and Carlos Reygadas. During the presser, the group explained their decision to give the top prize to "It Was Just an Accident," which follows a group of former prisoners in Iran who must decide whether or not to enact revenge on a man they think was their torturous guard. The film marked Panahi's first project since being imprisoned for several months in 2023 for criticizing the Iranian government, according to Variety.
"It's very human and political at the same time because he comes from a complicated country, politically speaking," Binoche said, adding, "When we watched the film, it really stood out. The film springs from a feeling of resistance, survival, which is absolutely necessary today. So we thought it was important to give this film the paramount award."
She continued, "Art will always win. What is human will always win. Our creative urge can transform the world."
Strong said that the jury "wanted to recognise films that we felt were transcendent intrinsically as pieces of work," aligning with how Robert De Niro kicked off the festival during its opening ceremony by saying that "fascists should fear art," reported Variety. (ANI)

Kamal Haasan's much-anticipated action drama Thug Life continues its impressive box office run. On Day 3, the film maintained its steady momentum, collecting Rs 28 crore across all languages. Mani Ratnam's Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR and Trisha Krishnan-starrer Thug Life is unfortunately receiving a lukewarm response at the box office. Despite facing multiple challenges, Thug Life is putting up a determined fight at the box office. After a promising opening with Rs 15.5 crore, the film witnessed a sharp drop on Friday, earning Rs 7.15 crore which is a decline of nearly 54 per cent. Saturday saw a further dip, with the film collecting around Rs 5.84 crore, bringing the total to approximately Rs 28.49 crore in India. The Mani Ratnam directorial managed a 35.62 per cent occupancy for its Tamil version on Saturday. However, the film's performance has been impacted by a few setbacks including comparisons to Haasan's iconic Nayakan, a disruption in Karnataka due to a language dispute, and stiff competition from Housefull 5. Thug Life stars a fantastic ensemble including Trisha, Silambarasan, Joju George, Ashok Selvan, Nasser, Abhirami, and more. The music is composed by the legendary AR Rahman, with stunning visuals captured by cinematographer Ravi K Chandran. The movie's editing is handled by A Sreekar Prasad. A part of the review of the film by News18 read, 'Thug Life ends up becoming a film that is torn between telling two stories. One is the unkillable and morally ambiguous king who continues to defy death. This story of Rangaray Sakthivel is a stand-in or metaphor for Kamal Haasan himself and how the actor has stood the test of time. However, this is half-done as the film is also about Amar and his tragedy. The climax is supposed to complete the circle. Now, the 'shield' gets shielded but still, the arc isn't organic and the irony kind of gets lost in the immortality of Sakthivel." Before Thug Life hit theatres, Kamal Haasan promoted the film with great energy. He was especially happy to team up with director Mani Ratnam again after 38 years. Their last film together was the classic Nayakan in 1987. Kamal spoke warmly about the reunion during promotions, calling it a special moment in his career. As per ANI, he told the press, 'Every film is a challenge, especially when you add another director like Mani Ratnam and a story that is so interesting. Fortunately, he included me in the story's preparation. I gave him an idea. Most of the time I was getting vegetables and helping him make it more tasty. That's what I did. Before his gigs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on January 18 and 19, Chris, along with Hollywood actress Dakota Johnson, paid a sacred visit to the iconic Babulnath Temple. They were joined by Bollywood star Sonali Bendre and 'Swades' fame actress Gayatri Oberoi. Several images and videos went viral in which Chris, Dakota, Sonali and Gayatri were seen offering prayers. Dakota and Chris, who have now reportedly parted ways, embraced Indian culture with full devotion. Sonali and Gayatri also accompanied Dakota to the iconic Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai back in January. Dressed in traditional attire, the trio appeared to be in high spirits, engaging in a lively conversation as they made their way through the temple grounds. The wedding ceremony was held on June 5 in the presence of the couple's family members and close friends. The journey to their wedding began with a roka ceremony in January 2025.
