Massive new 15-foot sinkhole opens up on troublesome ‘Swiss cheese' New Jersey Interstate 80, detouring all traffic
All lanes on Interstate 80 in New Jersey are being detoured after a 15-by-15-foot sinkhole opened up in the middle of a construction zone on the troublesome, so-called 'Swiss cheese' roadway, officials announced Wednesday.
Westbound lanes are being detoured at Exit 34 to Route 15 northbound after the gaping hole swallowed up part of the roadbed, the New Jersey Department of Transportation wrote on X.
The sinkhole opened up in the median, near where construction crews were working to fix already existing holes on the eastbound side of the continent-spanning roadway, News12 New Jersey reported.
Eastbound lanes in Wharton, Morris County, have been closed for road repairs for the last several months — after sinkholes have been popping up repeatedly due to a 'significant void' that exists just below the surface near Exit 24, officials said.
'The underground is basically Swiss cheese,' William Kroth, executive director of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, told Pix11 last month.
On Monday, the NJ DOT announced that eastbound I-80 lanes would be closed for another two months — with more repairs, and traffic headaches, likely coming in the future.
Crews are working to stabilize the area under the roadway by filling holes, loose soil, and small voids while scouting the affected areas for further weak spots, according to the release.
Eastbound traffic on I-80 is currently being detoured via Route 10, Route 46, and Exit 34.
I-80 stretches 2,900 miles from Teaneck, New Jersey, to San Francisco, California.

Okeeheelee Park's $400,000 pump track for cyclists, skateboarders and scooters now open
Palm Beach County's first bicycle pump track is open for business. The pump track, a circuit of rollers and banked turns designed for bicycles, foot scooters and skateboards, is already seeing heavy use. Users generate momentum by 'pumping' or by up-and-down body movements. There is no need to pedal. The track opened on May 31 at Okeeheelee Park, on Forest Hill Boulevard near Greenacres, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and exhibition rides from both professional and amateur riders. The 10,000-square-foot facility offers a continuous-loop riding experience for people of all ages and skill levels. It can accommodate wheelchairs. Motorized vehicles are not permitted. The two-year-in-the-making track was made possible by a $400,000 donation from Margaret Blume and Palm Beach Pump Track, the nonprofit that oversaw its construction. The county Parks Department now operates it. Velosolutions, the Swiss-based company that built the track, defines a pump track as a 'High Performance Playground for Everything with Wheels.' The asphalt-surface pump track, open from sunrise to sunset, lies behind the dog park at Okeeheelee Park. Four things to know for those who plan to visit: Helmets are required, and safety equipment is highly recommended. The track is not wide enough for more than one participant at a time. Pets and personal belongings are prohibited on the track surface. Users should ride within their own ability. The track is unsupervised. Signage warns riders to ride at their own risk. The county expects the facility to be a major draw as the closest pump track is in Haulover Beach in Miami-Dade County. 'We are thrilled with the amount of usage thus far,' said Jennifer Kraatz, president of Palm Beach Pump Track. 'The word has gotten out.' More: Okeeheelee Park may be getting another amenity: a playground for everything with wheels Kraatz said the pump track has been designed to host qualifying tournament events that could be held in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. That is not expected to occur until next year, but Kraatz said that she expects communitywide tournaments to be held before then. Her nonprofit already operates the BMX track at Okeeheelee Park. Unlike the pump track, that course features a track that requires pedaling and has separated start-and-finish lines. Bicyclists mostly use it. RIMOWA Teams up With Vitra For Limited-Edition Collection
RIMOWAandVitrahave revealed a limited-edition collection made up of two pieces: a mobile stool, and a toolbox. Marking the first collaboration between the German luggage manufacturer and Swiss furniture brand, the two pieces are inspired by the 'rhythm of modern life', and are designed to be multifunctional, while also paying homage to both brands' work with aluminium. They're also designed to be mobile, especially in the case of the stool, which is set upon the brand's Multiwheel system. The outer shell is distinctly RIMOWA, and is crafted iconic grooved aluminium, while the interior is typically Vitra, and is upholstered with fabric and organised into storage sections. An upholstered pad can be added to the top, allowing the movable storage system to turn into a comfy perch. 'Vitra enters very few collaborations hence the brands we collaborate with has to resonate with our values, our design approach and our aesthetics – there has to be an obvious common ground,' Christian Grosen Ramussen, Chief Design Officer at Vitra, told Hypebeast. 'That said differences are also crucial since that's what creates the spark, the surprise and the new. In a collaboration there has to be synergies for the brands involved. 1 plus 1 must equal 3 or even more. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense.' The toolbox is a riff on the Vitra Toolbox designed by Arik Levy in 2010, but instead of being formed from recylced plastic (as standard), it comes in RIMOWA's signature anodized aluminium. Again, as a nod to Vitra's upholstery expertise, the compartments are lined with recycled fabric. The collaboration doesn't end at the design of the pieces: both are jointly manufactured at RIMOWA and Vitra's factories in Cologne and Weil am Rhein respectively. 'Vitra and RIMOWA are two iconic brands known for their material expertise and distinctive design,' adds RIMOWA CEO Hugues Bonnet-Masimbert. 'Sharing a passion for durability and craftsmanship, this collaboration perfectly embodies the essence of 'design' – where innovation and aesthetics come together.' The Aluminium Stool and the Aluminium Toolbox will be launching on June 18th, 2025, accompanied by an installation on the Vitra Campus. The Aluminium Stool will retail at €2,200 with 1000 pieces available, while the Aluminium Toolbox will be priced at €550, and limited to 100 pieces. Both will be available exclusively in Europe via and at selected flagships worldwide.
