Late Naomh Abán scoring burst denies gutsy Rockchapel

Irish Examiner26-07-2025
Cork Premier IFC: Naomh Abán 2-17 Rockchapel 1-14
Naomh Abán overcame Rockchapel by a point at the quarter-final stage last year before losing out to Aghabullogue in the semi-final.
In this year's opening group game rematch, a win was important in a tight looking group also involving Glanmire and Bandon. This proved to be a contest where no quarter was asked nor given.
It was a game that ebbed and flowed one way and then the other with Naomh Abán thankful for the accuracy from placed balls by Maidhcí Ó Duinnín and the inspirational play from man of the match Ed Myers.
But the scoreboard fails to tell the true story of how close this contest was. Naomh Abán led 1-9 to 0-8 at the break with Danny Ó Ceallaigh scoring the all-important goal with a solo effort as he neatly tucked the ball beyond the Rockchapel keeper into the roof of the net.
Rockchapel had made a blistering start with Seamus Hickey driving through the middle to set up John Walsh to open the scoring. But Naomh Abán's danger man Ed Myers then cut loose and kicked their opening three points with the Rockchapel defence struggling to cope with his pace and movement.
Rockchapel, with Seamus Hickey the dominant figure at midfield, were soon 0-4 to 0-3 in front thanks to points from Jack Curtin, Hickey and Nicholas Lenihan but Myers' goal appeared to suck the life out of them for a spell.
A two-pointer from a free by Ó Duinnín and two Darragh Ó Laoire points had the Muskerry side sitting pretty at half time four points to the good.
But Rockchapel resumed a transformed side and dominated the third quarter with Jack Curtin converting four frees and Jimmy McAuliffe making it 0-14 to 1-12 by the 48th minute.
With Seamus Hickey and Maurice O'Keeffe dominant around the middle, Rockchapel struck for a 51st-minute goal. David Carroll and Jimmy McAuliffe did the spadework and Nicholas Lenihan finished to the net. Suddenly Rockchapel were 1-14 to 1-12 in front.
But in the 53rd minute a controversial call saw momentum shift. A Rockchapel attacker appeared to be fouled twice, and inside the square, but referee Justin Murphy waved play on and when play swung to the other end, Wayne MacCarthaigh finished to the Rockchapel net to restore his side's one-point lead.
Naomh Abán then assumed complete control for the final eight minutes, adding a Myers two-pointer and another from play while Ó Duinnín closed out the game with two frees.

GAA championship clash ordered to be replayed after scoreboard error

A club game in Cork is to be replayed due to a scoreboard error. Aghada and Kildorrery have to do it all again in Co-op SuperStores IAHC Group 3, with the replay pencilled in for Saturday, August 30 at Páirc Uí Rinn (6.30pm). There will be free entry for supporters. When the sides clashed in Caherlag in late July, a point in first half injury time for Aghada's William Leahy was wrongly attributed to Kildorrery and instead of Aghada trailing by 1-10 to 0-9 at the break, Kildorrery held a 1-11 to 0-8 lead. Aghada stormed back into the game in the second half and a Fionn O'Connor goal and a late Leahy point saw his side draw level before the final whistle. But Aghada were convinced they had won rather than taken a share of the spoils with the official score recorded as 1-22 to 2-19. A Cork County Board Control Committee meeting this week discussed the issue and it was decided to void the original result and for the sides to play again. Last year there was also a result voided due to a scoreboard error, when Kilbrittain's victory over Aghabullogue in the JBHC semi-final was scratched after an appeal and Aghabullogue won the replay.

Goal-hungry Glanmire swift out of traps to beat Bandon

Cork Premier IFC: Glanmire 2-15 (2-0-15) Bandon 0-17 (0-3-11) Two first-half goals were crucial for Glanmire as they overcame Bandon in a titanic and highly entertaining PIFC game played in beautiful sunshine at Ballincollig. Credit to Bandon who pressed hard and got back on level terms after trailing by seven points at one stage of the opening half. But Glanmire had terrific pace in attack with Brian Galvin and Cathal McCarthy which proved too hot to handle. Aided by a slight breeze, Glanmire opened the scoring with an excellent point from the outstanding Brian Galvin after a good team move. Both defences were on top early on as both teams wasted a couple of decent chances. Bandon replied in excellent fashion with their talisman Michael Cahalane landing three points on the bounce, the third a superb effort with his left foot. Daniel Molden scores from the penalty spot for Glanmire against Bandon goalkeeper Ciaran McCarthy in the McCarthy Insurance Group Premier Intermediate Football Championnship clash; Bandon vs Glanmire at Ballincollig. Picture Larry Cummins Glanmire reduced the gap to the minimum with a long-range effort from David Lynch before Brian Galvin landed a sweet equaliser: 0-3 each. Glanmire hit the front when James Crowley flicked over a good point from play. The city side were really dominating now and a superb run from Daniel Hogan resulted in a Glanmire penalty after he was pulled down with the goal at his mercy. Experienced full-forward Daniel Molden made no mistake with a bullet to the corner of the net, 1-4 to 0-3 at the end of the first quarter. A shell-shocked Bandon landed a badly needed two-pointer with an excellent effort from Conor Calnan. Glanmire doubled their goal tally after a brilliant individual effort from Cathal McCarthy to establish a significant lead. Molden converted another chance from Glanmire with a well-taken score which pushed their lead out to seven points. But Bandon rallied significantly in the closing minutes of the opening half with a magnificent two-point score from Michael Cahalane from a very difficult angle. The impressive Conor Calnan reduced the gap to four points by finishing off an excellent team move, 2-7 to 0-9 at halftime. On resumption, Cahalane landed a placed effort before the experienced Molden cancelled it out with a Glanmire free. Bandon continued to press with Jack Cullinane clipping over before Michael Cahalane landed a glorious two-pointer. Bandon landed the equalising score with a fine effort from substitute Darren Crowley, 0-14 to 2-8 after 40 minutes. Both sides failed to score for the following 10 minutes before Glanmire seized control of the contest. Goalkeeper Brendan O'Connell edged them in front with a placed free before excellent points from Darragh Murray and Brian Galvin edged them three points in front. Cahalane replied with a free for Bandon as the tension mounted for the closing minutes. Casey steers Aghabullougue to win over Blues

Cork Premier IFC: Aghabullogue 2-11 Bantry Blues 0-12 A Luke Casey-led Aghabullogue outfit got their championship campaign off to the perfect start after outbattling Bantry Blues in Ballingeary. Aghabullougue – beaten finalists last year – hassled and harried Bantry to great effect in the first half, and won the big moments throughout to ensure they sit atop Group 1. The ever-dangerous Casey would garner 1-4 throughout the hour, but his contributions were timely, none more so than his 48th minute left-footed goal. It gave them a seven-point lead. It proved to be insurmountable for the West Cork men. Turnovers proved to be a major issue early on and that was the case for much of the first half. Multi-talented forward Casey would open scoring for Aghabullogue – from a Bantry turnover – in the 4th minute after some early waywardness. Cork underage star Dara Sheedy would find the reply for the Blues. Matthew Bradley – who linked up admirably with Casey all day would put his name on the scoresheet for the Muskerry men before the 10-minute mark. Again, that score came from a turnover. Bradley kicked a two-point free before Arthur Coakley knocked over his first with 15 gone. 0-5 to 0-2. Advantage Aghabullogue. Dara Sheedy would scuff a two-point free effort before curling a gorgeous one over off his right. Gather. Shimmy. Shoot. Score. Deficit back to two. Arthur Coakley pushed a free wide in the 24th minute and up the other end, a fast transition saw Evan O'Sullivan in on goal and he duly finished. Four-point swing. 1-5 to 0-3. After a Paddy Cronin free for Bantry, Bradley and Casey would link up for perhaps the score of the day as the clock ticked towards the break. Bradley delivery, Casey finish. Bantry almost capitalized on poor Aghabullougue defending on the stroke of half-time. A powerful Mark Óg O'Sullivan run could have yielded a goal, but his shot flew just over. An opening 30 full of tenacity would end 1-6 to 0-5 points. The game restarted and all eyes were immediately on Dara Sheedy – and Casey. Casey saw yellow for a late hit on Bantry 'keeper Shane Murray, with the Blues' sideline questioning if further action was warranted. That incident was sandwiched in between two classy left-footed scores from Sheedy. Casey and Bantry livewire Shane Keevers would swap scores thereafter, while Paul Ring and Aaron O'Sullivan points restored Aghabullogue's four-point lead in the 45th minute. Bantry would then fail to capitalize on two scoring opportunities, and along came the sucker punch. Great Casey movement saw him gather close to goal and convert expertly. A mini Bantry-revival – from Seanie O' Leary and the Sheedy brothers Dara and Jack – would follow but points from Aaron O'Sullivan and Bradley meant Aghabullogue went home happy. Scorers for Aghabullogue: L Casey 1-4, M Bradley 0-4 (1 2pt free), E O'Sullivan (1-0), A O'Sullivan 0-2 (0-1 45'), P Ring 0-1. Scorers for Bantry Blues: D Sheedy 0-5, S O'Leary 0-2 (1 2pt free), S Keevers, A Coakley (0-1f), P Cronin (0-1f), J Sheedy, M Óg O'Sullivan 0-1 each.
