Paulinho ensures Palmeiras triumph in Brazilian battle

Palmeiras have edged out Brazilian rivals Botafogo 1-0 with an extra-time winner from Paulinho to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup.
There was little to chose between the two South American sides as the opening tie of the knockout stage proved a cagey affair at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
At the end of the first half, Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios forced Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor into a flying save from his rising drive.
Chelsea-bound Palmeiras forward Estevao saw a goal ruled out for offside five minutes into the second half, before Victor tipped over a glancing header from Mauricio.
After neither side could find a breakthrough in normal time, Botafogo goalkeeper Victor produced another fine stop at full stretch to palm away Rios' 20-yard strike.
Palmeiras made the decisive breakthrough in the 10th minute of extra-time when substitute Paulinho cut into the penalty area from the right and clipped a low shot into the far corner.
Botafogo, who finished second in Group B, having recorded a shock 1-0 win over European champions Paris St Germain, carved out an opening early in the second period of extra-time when Igor Jesus headed over and Vitinho then crashed a volley wide at the far post.
Palmeiras were reduced to 10 men with four minutes remaining when captain Gustavo Gomez was shown a second yellow card following an off-the-ball tussle with Botafogo defender Alexander Barboza.
Palmeiras defender Bruno Fuchs almost put the ball into his own net in stoppage time when trying to shield it back to goalkeeper Weverton from a corner as the Verdao held out to secure their spot in the last eight.

Messi's Miami out of Club World Cup, Bayern power on

Harry Kane has scored twice as Bayern Munich tamed Flamengo 4-2 in a tense affair in Miami to set up a much-anticipated all-European quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain at the FIFA Club World Cup. Backed by a raucous crowd, Flamengo played with aggression but Bayern converted all their shots on target and reaped the rewards of a fast start. The German Bundesliga champions struck in the sixth minute when Erick Pulgar deflected a corner kick into his own net. Three minutes later, England striker Kane doubled the advantage with a low shot that went in off the post. Shortly after the cooling break, the Brazilian side pulled one back as Gerson fired a missile that went in off the underside of the bar, triggering a deafening roar from the crowd. Bayern, however, restored their two-goal lead before the interval when Leon Goretzka whipped a shot from outside the box past keeper Agustin Rossi. Filipe Luis's side pulled one back again 10 minutes into the second half, Jorginho sending Manuel Neuer the wrong way after they were awarded a penalty for a Michael Olise handball. The momentum had swung but Bayern held firm before finding the back of the net once more through Kane, who beat Rossi with another clinical low shot in the 73rd minute. "It was tough. We were playing against a really good side in difficult conditions, it was really hot," Kane said. "I thought we played well for large spells but every time we got away they clawed their way back and made it difficult. The fourth goal was important to ease the nerves and from there we managed it well." Earlier on Sunday in Atlanta, European Champions League winners PSG sent a brutal reminder of their firepower when they cruised past Inter Miami 4-0, taking their foot off the pedal after the break in what could have turned into a humiliation for Lionel Messi's MLS team. Joao Neves netted twice before Tomas Aviles turned Desire Doue's cross into his own net and Achraf Hakimi added the fourth, all prior to halftime. "It was an almost perfect match, we created a lot of chances, and I'm happy yet I think we still need to improve, that's football," PSG coach Luis Enrique said. 'Scared' Picklum leads the way after victory in Brazil

Australian surfer Molly Picklum has shown why she's top of the women's World Surfing League standings, claiming her first win on tour this season in Saquarema, Brazil. After beating Canadian Erin Brooks 13.06 to 7.60 earlier on Sunday (Monday AEST) in the second semi-final, Picklum took on local Luana Silva in the final of the Vivo Rio Pro, stop 9 of the competition. Picklum opened with a 6.83 and followed it up with the highest single wave score of the event for the women, an 8.17. Her final total of 15.00 was also the highest of the event for the women at Praia de Itauna. Silva's best two-wave score totalled 9.23, well short of being able to stop Picklum winning for the third time. "She's (Silva) been surfing so well. I knew she's such a competitor and she's such a fighter," said the 22-year-old from Gosford. "I was pretty scared all the way till the end even though I had a couple of good scores. But yeah, she's capable of great things and I'm so happy to get that one over her." The WSL Tour's most consistent women's surfer in 2025 - reaching the quarter-finals in eight out of nine events, including three Finals - Picklum enjoys top spot with just two regular-season events remaining on the calendar. "I've worked so hard this year to really put my best foot forward," she added. "I've dreamt so much of winning here in Rio, too. I'm a real energetic person, I love the Brazilian energy, and to get a win this year means so much for sure. "Thank you so much and shout out to everyone back at home. I know you're all probably up watching and I felt all the love." In the men's draw, Aussie Ethan Ewing was beaten in the semis by American Griffin Colapinto, 14.84 to 14.20, after earlier downing defending champion and home hope Italo Ferreira (14.43-13.30) in the quarters. Colapinto was then out-gunned 16.90 to 14.40 by compatriot Cole Houshmand in the decider, who went two-for-two in CT Finals, backing up his 2024 breakthrough win at Bells Beach with another victory.
