Yahoo Fantasy Plus identifies 3 of 2025's safest starting pitchers — should you draft them at ADP?

The best ability is availability, right? Wheeler has proven to be a horse. He's made 32, 32, 26, 32, 31 and 29 starts in his last six full seasons, and even got to 71 innings in the pandemic year. Last year he ran lucky with batted-ball fortune, which explains the career-best WHIP, but Baseball Savant still says he pitched to a 2.80 expected ERA. The Phillies don't have the tightest defense, but the lineup should provide ample run support.
Bottom line: Perhaps there's some nervousness with Wheeler stepping into his age-35 season, but given his body type (6-foot-4, 195 pounds) and fairly stable fastball velocity, I'm comfortable drafting him with a full-season expectation. I'll sign off on Wheeler in the third round of drafts.

Yamamoto is no longer the new kid in town or even the newest Japanese pitcher on the Los Angeles roster. But let's acknowledge that he came as advertised in 2024. A rotator cuff strain cost him about half the season, but the efficiency stats were excellent — plus grades for his strikeout, walk and ground-ball rates. That's the way you win games: pound the zone, don't give anything away, keep the ball on the ground.
Bottom line: Maybe the 90 innings from last year will scare some managers, but Yamamoto was a durable pitcher overseas and he's looked sharp in the spring (13 innings, three walks, 14 strikeouts). In an era where it's hard to find anyone who might get to 200 innings, I'm fine to sign up for 150 or so from Yamamoto — the playoff-assured Dodgers do have a load-management tint to them — and enjoy the dominant ratios that should come along. He's merely entering his age-26 season. A good target at ADP.

The Castillo angle is similar to the Wheeler case — he's proven durable and takes the ball. Note the 121 starts the last four years. But although Castillo is two years younger than Wheeler, last year's Castillo production had some warts — a 3.91 FIP and a velocity dip for the fourth straight season. Castillo's strikeout rate also just barely dipped under one per inning for the first time in six years.
Bottom line: Because Castillo is merely 32 and his home Seattle park will hide a lot of mistakes, I can sign off on an ADP just inside the top 100. Castillo doesn't have to be your ace, he can reasonably handle a SP3 or SP4 tag, depending on format.

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Potential 'major difference-makers' among pickups to target
Hopefully there is something for everyone among the 11 names tabbed for consideration this week. Managers are encouraged to consider grabbing multiple players who work primarily in a platoon role. And there are also a couple players, Addison Barger and Eury Pérez, who could be major difference-makers this summer. [Smarter waivers, better trades, optimized lineups — Yahoo Fantasy Plus unlocks it all] Addison Barger, 3B/OF, Toronto Blue Jays, 40% Barger has started to turn elite skills into production, having hit .385 with four homers in 26 at-bats since May 28. The 25-year-old's Statcast page is covered in red, as he ranks among the top 15% of hitters in key stats such as average exit velocity, barrel rate, hard-hit rate, xBA and xSLG. He also has an absolute cannon of an arm that allows him to excel at third base or in right field. The Blue Jays have a clear need for another impact bat in their lineup, and the combination of skills and opportunity makes Barger the most exciting position player who is currently available in most leagues. Advertisement Michael Busch, 1B, Chicago Cubs, 49% Busch is the perfect player for default Yahoo formats. The slugger rarely plays against left-handers, which makes it easy for managers to stream him between their lineup and bench. Busch has been so good against righties (.952 OPS) that he ranks 11th among first basemen in both RBI and home runs. And his managers have received that production while also getting additional stats on his days off. Those in shallow leagues who are dedicated to monitoring their daily lineup should pick him up. Hyeseong Kim, 2B/SS, Los Angeles Dodgers, 15% Kim has less of a track record and a much different skill set than Busch, but there are otherwise plenty of similarities between the two. The rookie has been in the majors a little over a month, and in that time he has established himself as a game-changing player against right-handers (.994 OPS). He has also proven to be impactful on the basepaths (five steals). Kim doesn't start against southpaws, which means that managers can get all of his production and more by moving him to the bench when the Dodgers do the same. He's a great fit in categories leagues. Parker Meadows, OF, Detroit Tigers, 26% Meadows is the third consecutive player in this article who has plenty of value despite being platooned by his team. The outfielder recently returned from a season-opening stint on the IL, and he immediately took over as Detroit's leadoff hitter against right-handers. Hitting atop a lineup that ranks 4th in runs scored should allow Meadows to accumulate plenty of counting stats, and he also has a balanced skill set that will lead to some homers and steals. Finally, Meadows has a lifetime .728 OPS against left-handers, which should earn him some opportunities in those matchups. Willi Castro, 2B/3B/SS/OF, Minnesota Twins, 42% Castro got off to a slow start this season and then spent about three weeks on the IL. But since returning exactly one month ago, he has been a balanced contributor who has hit .278 with 5 homers, 2 steals and 18 runs scored. The 28-year-old does not have a high ceiling, but he contributes in a variety of ways and is among the easiest players to fit into a lineup thanks to his four-position eligibility. Advertisement Brett Baty, 2B/3B, New York Mets, 14% Baty has fared well of late, batting .260 with a .795 OPS since the beginning of May. His effective play has led to a full-time role, which puts Baty in terrific position to thrive this weekend when the Mets work at hitter-friendly Coors Field against a team with a 5.93 home ERA. Managers in all formats should strive to have some shares of New York's lineup until Sunday night. Eury Pérez, SP, Miami Marlins, 42% Pérez is set to return from April 2024 Tommy John surgery on Monday, and he will immediately become the most talented pitcher who is available in the majority of Yahoo leagues. The youngster was outstanding as a 20-year-old in his rookie season, logging a 3.15 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP and a 10.6 K/9 rate. Sure, there is risk involved with someone who is coming off such a long layoff, but Pérez has the upside of a mixed-league ace. Michael Wacha, SP, Kansas City Royals, 50% With a 2.88 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP, Wacha has been as effective as any full-time starter who remains widely available in Yahoo leagues. The veteran is the best pitcher to stream this weekend, as he is scheduled to start tomorrow against a 20-43 White Sox team that ranks 26th in runs scored. Griffin Canning, SP, New York Mets, 41% Canning bounced back from a pair of subpar outings when he struck out seven across six shutout innings against the high-scoring Dodgers. The right-hander walks too many batters (10.4%), but he minimizes the damage by getting his share of strikeouts and ground balls. Although Canning isn't effective enough to be recommended for long-term use, he will be one of the top available two-start hurlers next week when he will make a pair of appearances at his pitcher-friendly home park. Advertisement Ryne Nelson, SP/RP, Arizona Diamondbacks, 6% Nelson is an interesting dart throw in deeper leagues, as an injury to Corbin Burnes has opened a rotation spot for the 27-year-old, who logged a 3.23 ERA and a 67:14 K:BB ratio while working almost exclusively as a starter during the second half of last season. Nelson has been effective while mostly pitching in relief this year (3.43 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 35:11 K:BB ratio) and could be a permanent rotation member from this point forward. Daniel Palencia, RP, Chicago Cubs, 46% Palencia's roster rate has slowly climbed, but there is still a long way to go for someone who has established himself as the full-time closer for one of baseball's best teams. Palencia has pitched well this season (1.74 ERA, 0.77 WHIP) and will be a top-15 reliever as long as he holds his current role.

Calgary's Wild FC downs Halifax Tides 3-2 in Northern Super League
CALGARY - Calgary's Wild FC held off the Halifax Tides 3-2 on Thursday in the Northern Super League. Wild (3-2-2) scored three first-half goals before the winless Tides (0-5-1) countered with two late in the second. Calgary extended its undefeated run to four straight games with two wins and two draws in that span. Wild FC defeated the Tides 4-1 in Halifax on April 26 for Calgary's first NSL victory, and a week after the six-team NSL launched with the Vancouver Rise blanking Calgary 1-0. The Wild's Taegan Stewart scored her first career NSL goal when the 17-year-old Calgarian drilled a right-foot shot from the centre box home in first-half extra time. Jenaya Robertson of Delta, B.C., made it 2-0 for the hosts at McMahon Stadium with a left-footed strike in the 41st minute. Australian defender Ally Green got Calgary's first-half scoring burst underway in the 23rd minute. Wild goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec's bid for a third clean sheet in four games was foiled when Haligonian Saorla Miller and Japanese striker Megumi Nakamura scored in the 72nd and 76th minutes respectively for the Tides. Bukovec and Halifax keeper Erin McLeod, who has appeared in 119 games for the Canadian women's team, each made one save. Bukovec was the busier of the two women with 68 touches to McLeod's 36. Wild FC's next game is against AFC Toronto in Calgary on June 14. The Tides host Ottawa Rapid FC on June 10. 'Horrid': Socceroos fans expose grim truth as epic goal all-but seals World Cup spot
Take nothing away from the Socceroos' incredible win over Japan that all but sealed their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. At the end of the day, coach Tony Popovic won't care how we got there as long as World Cup qualification is assured. And barring an absolute disaster in the final group game against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on Tuesday, that's exactly what Aziz Behich's stunning 90th minute winner delivered on Thursday night. However, the performance from the Aussies will leave Popovic more than a little concerned ahead of next year's showpiece event, with fans describing it as a 'horrid' display from the Aussies. For the majority of the 90 minutes in Perth, the Socceroos were comfortably second best against a Japan side considered second-string. With the previously unbeaten Japan's World Cup spot already assured, as many as seven regulars didn't even fly to Perth, while other stars such as Wataru Endo, Takefusa Kubo and goalkeeper Zion Suzuki were all named on the bench. But any thoughts the Socceroos could take advantage of an understrength Japanese side were quickly expelled as the Samurai Blue dominated from the opening whistle. Japan enjoyed a whopping 70 per cent of possession and seven shots to two in the opening 45 minutes, completing almost three times as many passes as the Aussies, who appeared to be chasing shadows at times. The Socceroos struggled to cope with Japan's intricate passing game and intense press and gave the ball away far too easily at times. The Aussies were given a big scare in the 28th minute when Yuito Suzuki surged forward and sent his shot just wide, but the hosts weathered the storm and made it to halftime unscathed. The Socceroos came out after the break with a renewed sense of purpose and a goalkeeping error from Japan in the 48th minute gave Behich a sniff that he wasn't able to take advantage of. But Japan quickly found their rhythm again and dictated proceedings until a couple of late changes swung the momentum in Australia's favour. Popovic brought on striker Mitch Duke and attacking midfielder Daniel Arzani and it made an instant impact as the home side finally began to look like more of a threat going forward. However, it was Riley McGree's superb turn in the Japanese box that ultimately unlocked the contest and settled a game that looked destined for a draw. McGree cut the ball back from the byline and picked out an unmarked Behich, who capped off one of the best weeks of his life with a sumptuous strike that sent the home crowd into raptures and all but secured Australia's passage to the World Cup. Behich, who won the A-League title with Melbourne City last Saturday, rated his goal against Japan as his finest moment in Socceroos colours. "As soon as it's come off my foot, I felt I hit it pretty nicely," Behich said. "I actually didn't see the ball hit the net. I just kind of saw the crowd erupt and players start running everywhere. That's when I'm like, 'Let's go'. It was a beautiful moment." Socceroos coach Popovic described Australia's first win over Japan in 16 years as a 'special night', having exploded with emotion after the goal went in. "The outpouring of emotions when we scored, and obviously after the game - it's a moment I'll always remember," he said. "We've all played a part in getting us to this point, and we want to go to Saudi Arabia now and really finish the job off." The result leaves the Socceroos (16 points, +8 goal difference) three points ahead of Saudi Arabia (13 points, zero goal difference) in the second automatic qualifying spot in the group behind Japan, after the Saudis beat Bahrain 2-0 overnight. But with a vastly superior goal difference than the Saudis, only a massive loss in Jeddah on Tuesday will deny the Socceroos a World Cup berth. After that, it only gets harder for Popovic's men.
