Chicago Bears legend Steve "Mongo" McMichael dies after ALS battle
Chicago Bears Hall of Fame legend Steve "Mongo" McMichael has died at age 67 after a long bout with ALS.
The big picture: McMichael's death came just hours after it was announced he was being taken off a ventilator and moved into hospice.
Context: McMichael was one of the colorful characters on the legendary 1985 Bears team that won Super Bowl XX. He was a starter on a defense that included Hall of Fame players like Richard Dent, Dan Hampton and Mike Singletary.
McMichael is third on the Bears' all-time sack list (95).
He was finally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024, voted in by the Hall of Fame's seniors committee.
Zoom out: The Texas native brought his big personality to Chicago in 1981, and even though he played for other teams in his career, he returned after retiring to live in the area.
McMichael was also a one-time professional wrestler, a restaurateur and a football analyst.
Mongo was famous for rattlesnake hunting and for being an unpredictable live interview in the locker room and on post-game shows.
He once famously handcuffed sports anchor Mark Giangreco to his desk on live television.
In 2021, the larger-than-life personality was diagnosed with ALS, which confined him to a bed ever since.

Seth Rollins on why Caleb Williams will have better Year 2 than Jayden Daniels Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will be compared for the duration of their NFL careers. The first and second overall picks, respectively, have all of the talent and potential to thrive and be the face of the league for the long term. But while Daniels had an easy-going rookie season -- en route to Offensive Rookie of the Year honors -- Williams dealt with adversity and still faces plenty of criticism after just one year. During a recent appearance on the "Up & Adams" show, WWE superstar (and noted Bears fan) Seth Rollins explained why he believes Williams will have a better 2025 season than Daniels. "I think Caleb Williams is going to have a better year," Rollins said. "I think last year was an aberration. I think you're going to see a little bit of a sophomore slump. I think people are going to be able to gameplan for (Jayden) better. ... I just think the second year is going to be more difficult. You look at C.J. had a great year, but compared to the rookie year, not quite as good. I think you're going to look at it and see a situation like that whereas expectations are going to be a little bit lower for Caleb, and I think he's going to be able to exceed those. Plus, he's playing in a system with Ben Johnson that's going to be curated better to him than what he was doing with Shane Waldron." While it's easy to deem Rollins a "superfan" defending "his" quarterback, he brings up a good point. A sophomore slump could potentially be in play for Daniels, who had a lights-out rookie season. Also, we haven't even glimpsed Williams' ceiling after his chaotic rookie season that featured incompetent coaching. Now with Ben Johnson in place, we should get a taste of what Williams can really bring to the field. There's no reason Williams and Daniels can't both be great -- and we could very well be witnessing the beginning of that -- but people love to compare and declare who's better. That's a question that wouldn't even be answered for several years. But with both Williams and Daniels in the NFC, they'll be seeing a lot of each other throughout their careers -- especially if their respective teams become perennial playoff teams. Williams and Daniels will square off again for the second time in as many seasons when the Commanders host the Bears on Monday Night Football in Week 6. While Williams nearly won the first match -- before Tyrique Stevenson's blunder on a Hail Mary -- he'll have a chance to redeem himself and even the series with Daniels on Oct. 13.

Ben Johnson envisions a big season for Bears DT Gervon Dexter
Chicago Bears defensive tackle Gervon Dexter could be in line for a big season in 2025. While Dexter has shown glimpses of his potenital, he hasn't had a breakout year just yet. But that could all change this year. This offseason, the Bears aded multiple veterans to reinforce the defensive line alongside Dexter, including signings defensive tackle Grady Jarrett and defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo, as well as drafting defensive tackle Shemar Turner. Advertisement Last season, Dexter got off to a fast start but his production declined when veteran defensive tackle Andrew Billings was lost for the season to a torn pec. Now, Dexter is positioned to have a productive season surrounded by key veterans. This week at minicamp, head coach Ben Johnson discussed Dexter's role this season and how he feels the entire defensive line can rise up as an entire unit. "It's hard to compare because I've only been with him now for, what, seven weeks, eight weeks?" Johnson said. "But, I can tell you this, just from afar, having called plays against him, he was a guy that really came on last year. You could feel it. With Billings being out last year, you could feel him grow into just a little bit more of, 'Hey, I need to step up here,' and you could see it. You can see it on the tape. There was growth. There was more production, particularly in the pass-rush game. "I think what we've seen here from the D-line room, as a whole, we've seen a lot of guys that are pushing, they're growing. I like to spend a lot of time down there during individual because it's not just great work, technique work they're getting, but they're coaching each other up along the way. as well. We have a great, cohesive unit. Then, when we get the pads on, it's going to be a really healthy competition, as well." On top of the player additions made to the roster, the Bears brought in defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and defensive line coach Jeremy Garrett to help maximize the roster. With the players in place, there's no reason we shouldn't see better production from the defensive line in 2025.
